reynard Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I can't say I was a fan as I have to admit I really knew very little about him when he signed for us. However, other people's opinion of him combined with a hefty price tag combined with supposed premier league interest encouraged me to believe we had got ourselves a very decent player. Here lies a lot of the problem with Mills; expectation. When a club our size spends big money on a player especially a defender I think we all expect certain standards. I certainly expected someone who is comfortable in possession, can pass successfully most of the time, has some pace, in the case of a centre back can dominate in the air most of the time at defending set pieces and as a club captain I expect to see leadership on the pitch and diplomacy off it. In the case of Mills it is my personal opinion that he is lacking in most of these areas. Now if he had cost say 1 million I'm not sure the debate would be so fierce or reactions so strident. As for his attitude I really can't say. There's a lot of speculation and things said by people but as I've never met the guy or spoken to him I can't say whether it stinks or not. There is certainly something in his demeanor which at times looks negative and this isn't a positive thing in a club captain.
Babylon Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I don't think he's that bad... Apart from his distribution. But something at the back hasn't been right for a while and the fingers been pointed at quite a few people. It looks like Pearson has decided Mills was the problem. With his record as a CB and his record of picking them, I think he's more qualified than anyone to decide that.
Nicobonibus Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 i do like the guy .. but i think there's too much expected of him cause hes the record signing and captin.
Webbo Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I support Leicester City not Matt Mills. I think he's a good player but if the manager wants him out I'll go with that.
Raw Dykes Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 Defended him in the past and don't think he's a 'bad' defender'. But Bamba, Ledge and Morgan are far better options right now. We've got to be a ruthless club right now and those pulling their weight must be moved on. This is a bold but absolutely correct decision. I agree, but I say keep those ones. I'm looking forward to seeing how well the team performs in the next few matches. Something like this has got to have an effect on the dressing room, and probably for the better. It might make no difference at all to the team's performances, but then maybe it's exactly the catalyst we need.
Charl91 Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I'm much more a Bamba fan then a MM fan, but MM is a good defender, I just think pressure/expectation has got to him. Plus his attitude doesn't seem great either, from what I've seen & heard from him. That being said, he has also had some good games. It's alright to say that Morgan/SSL are our best defense, but they've only played 2 games together so far - remember, we also had a period where MM and Bamba started to look good together. If we don't get clean sheets in the next few, our fans will turn on them too. I would like to keep Mills, but if he's not willing to accept that only those in best form will start, then he should go, since that's counter-productive for the team. However, I don't know what goes on between him and Pearson, so have no idea whether that is the real reason or not.
Saxondale Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 What's happened to all of Matt Mills' fans? They've had their Millsy love bullied out of them on here.
Saxondale Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 agree with this, morgan has no pace! will get found out soon enough! I was worried about his perceived lack of pace when he arrived, but then I thought about it - a lot of our best CBs over recent years have not been that quick but make up for it by reading the game well. Matt Elliott, for example.

ajthefox Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 The facts of the case mi lud, are these: Leicester City sit a full 17 points behind Southampton and 16 points behind West Ham.. That's a lot of points... It's also highly unlikely that we will even make the play offs. Therefore, the season, at least in the league, has been an abject failure compared to what most of us thought it would be. These are facts, and are indisputable. Matt Mills has played most games as centre back. He's been the club captain. He's been sent off twice. Therefore, Matt Mills has also been an abject failure in terms of captaining the club to perform at what has been a very average level this season. He's not the only one... Beckford was signed for one thing... To score goals... Three league goals and two assists is dreadful so he's also been a failure. Richie Wellens, one of my favourite players, has put in some dreadful performances.. So he too has failed at this seasons objective. These are also facts and are indisputable. The only players this year that have truly stood out IMO have been Kasper, David Nugent, the Konch and most recently St. Ledger. All the rest have improved a little, but over the season thus far have been decidedly average. The question is this... Do fans want to see the same set of players again next season? Are we gonna be happy, for example, to see Matt Mills back captaining a City side come the start of next season? From what I've seen of him the answer to that question is a resounding 'No'. Why? If he's not come up with the goods this season why on earth will he next? The same with Beckford... All I've heard all season is that he's 'gonna come good' and when he does he'll 'set the championship on fire'.. Well, when exactly? The season is now not far from being over and neither Mills nor Jermaine are exactly setting the division alight are they? No, I would be happy to see the back of certain players from this squad and for certain new ones to be introduced. The reason being I'm not convinced that they are going to improve particularly. Especially Matt Mills... Much of what you said sounds very reasonable but you lose credibility when you continuously claim you are stating facts. The vast majority of that is opinion.
Guest Col city fan Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 Much of what you said sounds very reasonable but you lose credibility when you continuously claim you are stating facts. The vast majority of that is opinion. Only the top half was meant to be factual.. Mills captain and rubbish league position.. Fact Beckford's league goal tally one of the worst of in the division, for strikers, vis a vis games played. Even Darius Henderson of Millwall has scored ten more than Becks . Fact... Wellens a shadow of his former self for most of this season (ok that's not fact but few would argue this point).. Then it becomes opinion (a clue to this is the use of 'IMO')

I may well agree with parts, but your interpretations of what makes something "dreadful" or an "abject failure" are completely subjective and not authoritative facts as you have claimed. I might add there's no need to be so condescending, I'm well aware of what IMO means thanks very much.

I might add there's no need to be so condescending, I'm well aware of what IMO means thanks very much. No offence meant regarding IMO. But I take your point.. I didn't merely want to post a 'statistical table'.. I'll leave that to Opta Instead a combination of objectivity/ subjectivity.. But I think you know that really. And I never claim to be 'authoritative'.. I'm just a fan making a contribution. If you really wanted me to put that Matt Mills sits second in the whole division for poor discipline and that Beckford doesn't even come into the list of the top 25 goalscorers then I could. And these two sets of stats for Svens two most expensive signings. But anyone can read this of course
kingfox Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I will add everything I have said on other threads. I am a season ticket holder by the way, and I really can't stand watching Mills week in week out. He is probably one if not the most overrated centre back in the entire Npower Championship, he is a pretty poor player who has a lot of improving to do on his footballing skills. Mills's only positive for me is his defending/blocking skills, he isn't afraid to put his body on the line which is good to see, but you need to be good at a lot more than just blocking the ball. We all know his passing is poor, his distribution probably worse, he plays too much hoof ball which most of the time is unnecessary, and his attitude is woeful. In all honesty it baffles me, that some fans still think he is a good player.
bluesbrothers Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 You don't just get rid of your club captain like that! Most people would probably agree he should never have been made club captain in the first place.
Jobyfox Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I’m not going to change my opinion on Matt Mills as I think he is a decent defender. My main problem is that decent is not good enough for a player we know cost more than £2m and, if we really did pay nearer £5m, than he’s certainly not been good enough. You could say, however, that the fee we paid is not his fault. He’s not the complete article, but I felt that he had a bit of Steve Walsh about him (i.e. that he’d never be the most technically gifted, but would achieve due to his high endeavour). For most of the season I was convinced that our best CB pairing was Mills and Bamba. I’ve never understood the Bamba doubters and I’ve always believed that it’s caused by a perception of the way he plays rather than anything he particularly does – but that’s a different argument. In recent weeks I’ve been forced to change my opinion on Shaun St. L. Originally I thought he was a very average Championship CB, but I love being proven wrong by players. Then there is Morgan who has put in two good performances. I’m not going to judge Morgan too early, but he looks to be quicker and have more ability than Forest fans led us to believe. So, in short, I think that despite the difference in signing on fee and wages that the merits of our centre backs is close enough to be debated at length on these forums. The fact that we all differ in opinion tells me that there isn’t as much to choose between the CBs as to make the team selection obvious. Against this backdrop I think it’s fair and reasonable that each of the 4 (or 5) CBs should fight to keep the shirt and not be guaranteed a place in the team. If Mills responded badly to being dropped then it’s not the attitude we need at the club and he should go. There are too few players in our current team who would be entitled to throw their toys out the pram if they were dropped: I’d say Schmeichel, Nugent and Konchesky – and even Konchesky has had to fight for his place with Kennedy.
flowwolf Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 He's still a solid defender. On current form he's our 3rd choice. Let's be honest, if you think Pearson wants him out for footballing ability reasons alone, you're a little bit silly. If I was a manager it is his footballing ability that would immediately give me the the reason to get rid of him., have you actually seen him try to play ? He is the most over rated player I have ever had the misfortune to see in a city shirt and believe me I have seen enough. Solid defender my arse.
Aylestone Fox Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 ,....had enough of the Mills debate now,.... what will be will be. I'll support and back up whoever is wearing the blue shirt, agree with Captain Shrapnell's earlier post,.. Bring on the Cov'scum' and lets get those back to back wins and push for good run in.....

Bugg Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 Why has Jermaine Beckford even been brought up into this thread?
Legend_in_blue Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 We may sit 17 points behind Southampton and on the face of it, that's quite a lot. However, 10 of these points can be attributed to the weak officials we've had in many games this season. They have cost us 10 points. So 7 points worse off than top spot I can live with. The situation remains the same this season as it was last as it was the season before that. We need to find a way to play against tin-pot in this league and see out a win without being the creators of our own downfall in these types of games. Until we break the way tin-pot clubs come at us, or don't as the case is in the majority, we will continue to struggle.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 Most are pissed at him cos he got to bone Emma Rigby's and also gets paid tens of thousands to play in the ressies. If anyone knows Top or Nigel, or Emma for that matter, please tell them I'll do this for a less. I'll make love to all 3 of them if need be Cheers TBJS
