Peltier to.............

No great loss to be honest, I'm sure that De Laet will be starting most games in the right back berth and, from what I saw when he was on loan at Portsmouth, De Laet is the better player. It's a shame we couldn't keep hold of Peltier as back-up, but I doubt he'd want to play second fiddle and if he wants to move on to get first team football then fair play to him.

So it looks like it's nailed on that he'll be leaving - all that remains to be seen is whether Pearson will get anyone else in as cover, or if he thinks Moore is now good enough to do a job there? I hope he gives the young lad a chance personally - you won't be able to find many quality players who are willing to come in and play second fiddle and we should be doing all we can to try and bring on some of our promising academy players, as we seem to have a few of them. A few more signings and we should have a good side. If you look at all the positions our current crop of players can play, we've got quite a few utility players and some very good first teamers already:

GK - Schmeichel

GK - Logan

GK - Smith

GK - ?

DR - De Laet

DR - Moore

DR - ?

DC - Morgan

DC - St Ledger

DC - ?

DC - De Laet

DC - Moore

DL - Konchesky

DL - Kennedy

DL - De Laet

MC - Wellens

MC - King

MC - Danns

MC - Drinkwater

MC - Marshall

MC - James

LW - Dyer

LW - Marshall

LW - Vardy

LW - Gallagher

LW - ?

RW - Marshall

RW - Gallagher

RW - Drinkwater

FW - Beckford

FW - Nugent

FW - Vardy

FW - Futacs

FW - Schlupp

FW - Waghorn

FW - Hopper

FW - Panayiotou

I would say the main areas we need to strengthen before the start of the season is the LW berth - Dyer is getting on a bit now and I think I'm right in saying Marshall has looked better on the RW or in an AM role. We could also use perhaps two centre backs - one to ideally compete with Morgan and St Ledger for a first team place; someone like James Chester or Craig Dawson for example, then if Pearson can unearth another young gem with a bit of potential, then that'd be ideal for backup - perhaps someone on loan? Chalobah from Chelsea and Wisdom from Liverpool are supposed to have quite bright futures in the game. We could perhaps do with another goalkeeper and a back-up right back, but I don't think these are really pressing concerns. I'd like to see us dip into the loan market for these positions rather than permanently sign players.

Something not right about the Pet's situation. If he's not good enough for us why do Huddersfield and Leeds think he is worth trying to out bid each other ? Either we have got it badly wrong or they have.

Perhaps he's better than their current RBs but not better than ours? I maintain that De Laet - on paper - is the better player. Portsmouth fans loved him while he was on loan there a couple of seasons ago:

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/what-do-portsmouth-fans-think-of-de-laet/

I managed to see a few games where he's played at RB and I was impressed, he looks very solid. I'm not saying Peltier is a bad player by any stretch of the imagination, he's fairly average - his main weakness seems to be that he gets caught out of position a lot of the time. A serious amount of goals came through our left flank last season and Peltier has to be part of the reason for that.

Yeah! You know what managers are like though? They see qualities in players that aren't that apparent to the rest of us and players who look sound enough, fall out of favour.

I've kept in touch with how Pelts has been doing at Leicester City via. Twitter and it certainly seems he's done very little wrong and there's been loads of concerned fans tweeting him about all this speculation. Basically, we need a midfield holding player so maybe Simon G. thinks Lee could do a job for us in that position. The idea if him replacing Jack Hunt at right back is a non-starter, in fact there'd be uproar if Jack's not first choice in that position. :D

Think it is more of a case that he no longer wants to be at the club. Have heard he isn't enjoying it here. Probably not going to be first choice this season so NP probably decided to cash in.

Because he's good enough for teams whose current aim is to just stay in the league and not get out of it. ;)

But I suppose we will get the usual, "Pearson fell out with him", "Pearson can't handle big names like Lee Peltier".

Merc

Lee Peltier is flying back from Leicester City's summer training camp in Austria after officially informing the club that he wants to leave.

The defender has accepted his City career is over after being told he does not feature in manager Nigel Pearson's plans.

  • 3973657.png

With both Leeds and former club Huddersfield keen to take the 25-year-old, Peltier is set to return home in a bid to sort out his protracted move away from the King Power Stadium.

Although Peltier has become surplus to requirements, City have played hardball on a possible transfer fee and rejected a deal potentially worth £650,000 from Huddersfield at the end of last week.

Sources in Yorkshire say the Terriers thought they had struck a deal but were told City wanted more cash up-front.

City paid £750,000 for Peltier from Huddersfield a year ago.

The Mercury first reported Peltier was set for the exit door in May, and Leeds have been the favourites to land him from the outset.

Leeds boss Neil Warnock has retained his interest and, several times, it looked as though Peltier was on his way to Elland Road.

But a deal has not been sorted and Peltier will try to resolve the issue personally, and wants to hold talks with both Leeds and Huddersfield.

New signing Ritchie De Laet is set to start the season as first-choice right-back after his summer switch from Manchester United.

The pacey Belgium international is versatile and can play anywhere along the back four but admits he prefers right-back.

Meanwhile, Pearson and his staff were putting the squad through their paces in Austria yesterday. The players began with an eight-mile bike ride at 7am to the first of three training sessions yesterday.

They are set to be joined by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and defender Sean St Ledger today after they were given extra time off after their participation in Euro 2012 with Denmark and the Republic of Ireland respectively.

City are in Austria for conditioning work before they begin their pre-season friendly fixtures at Hinckley United on Tuesday.

Thanks, we'll take that. Feels good being on the other end of ripping clubs off in the transfer market.

Nigel Pearson can't handle big name players...

Like Lee Peltier and Matt Mills.

Bit late to be saying he wants out as it's been obvious for a while that Pearson doesn't want him

I'm not a Pearson-hater by any stretch but I do think it's odd that NP took time out to praise him in the Merc only a couple of months ago and now he's deemed surplus to requirements. I've been looking for the article on the Merc website as I'm sure it said in there that City were going to offer Pelts a new / improved contract. Now he's leaving - all seems a bit strange to me.

Someone has probably already raised this point but I can't be arsed to check through 20-odd pages.

Very good post. The first thing that jumps out from the squad list for me is the lack of cover at centre back. If we assume that De Laet will play at right back, we will be struggling (as things stand) if either St Ledger or Morgan are injured or suspended. Another quality centre back has to be the priority for me. I see what you are saying about left wing, but I would like to see Vardy given a chance there before I comment on that.

In my opinion I think Pearson is doing a good job at building a talented young squad with a work ethic. Whilst at the same time helping to balance the books by getting rid of some of the larger earners and fringe players that he deems surplus to requirements.

Well, again we're in a situation where we think something must have happened. I can remember Pearson praising Peltier but wasn't that before FFP was voted in? Whether we like it or not or even whether Pearson likes it or not, he's having to massively reduce the wage bill and I assume that he must be on decent wages so Pearson probably decided that he can get a more solid player that doesn't constantly get caught out of position for a much lower wage. If Pearson wanted to or we could afford to keep him he would have flatly refused any offer. We do know from Peltiers twitter that the only knowledge he had of it came from the fans so it wasn't from him. Doesn't mean there's anything sinister going on. I can't be bothered to scroll through 20+ pages either

Another player saying he isnt enjoying his football here. Must say im baffled hes even contemplating a move to Huddersfield. Reckon he'll end up at Leeds.

Matt James can play centre half if needed, and St. Ledger can cover right back, but I agree - we are definitely short of numbers in defence, even more so when Peltier leaves.

Ideally, I think we should have 7 or 8 first team defenders. I expect there will be at least one more centre half arriving. Hopefully, we'll get one as competition for St. Ledger for a first team place, and another one with potential for the future. I don't really know whether Moore is good enough to be involved with the first team yet, so I don't know whether we need to sign another right back as backup to De Laet.

LB - Konchesky, Kennedy, (De Laet)

CB - Morgan, St. Ledger, (De Laet), (Moore), (James)

RB - De Laet, Moore, (St. Ledger)

It's not really a question of who can play where, wouldn't we rather have them playing their own positions and only covering in the event of injuries on the pitch or tactical substitutions? I really don't want square pegs in round holes in a starting 11. 2 central defenders is a must as far as i'm concerned. As others have said 1 first teamer and 1 youngster is probably the best thing. The other positions are a matter of opinion but we're not short of cover. Personally, i'd like another winger but that looks unlikely at the mo, and a proper defensive/holding midfielder which again isn't looking likely

It's easy to say that when he knows that he won't be first choice and that we're trying to ship him out.

I agree, he could step in, but I didn't mean that we wouldn't be able to field a side. If he did have to cover, the side would have a rather makeshift look to it in my opinion. I would rather have cover that plays as a centre back as their preferred position. Besides I'm hoping St Ledger will end up being the cover and we sign another first choice centre back, not just a makeweight.
