AjcW Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 Yes I am but I have just stated many times before I find people discussing the topic pointless... invest more time in developing yourself.... do a couple of weeks volunteering... do something for free.... Develop a pool of valuable references... Get the CV sorted (dont follow templates just make it tidy and do your own thing) Get on Linkedin (no debates just do it) Get creative in the search, like I said volunteering, unpaid work experience and while your there impress them, it'll turn into more formal paid work. Im sorry for being so negative but it pisses me off when I put in the amount of effort I do to make myself an attractive proposal to employers and then you see people moan and wonder whats wrong. p.s. I hope people dont take this the wrong way, I am perfectly happy to help as well if anyone is up for that!
BoneDog Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 Or if you can drive and own a car...Meter Reading. http://jobseekers.di...d=2&j=LCR/65082 That's my kind of job. When I get my license back I'm defo going for something like that. A radio, car heater, sandwiches and flask. Identity badge. Your own boss sort of thing. The open road. Reading meters. Cushdy.

People have the right to moan, especially given a lot have no idea how to piece together a tidy application and have never really been shown or helped. Congratulations, you did so yourself and got a job out of it - not everyone's that savvy.

I know Finners that is the point I was making, people need decent advice not the shit spoon fed at the job centre. Like I said I would happily put a little something together if someone wanted the ask. But lets be honest, we are a nation of people who are to proud to ask...
Rincewind Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 May be too late for me now as I have a possible job. I did the template CV thing. Problem is I've not had many different jobs. I've put my name down for volunteering at VAL and don'y hear from them. My skills or lack of them - mainly qualifications are hard to accomomdate. Been doing the media volunteering but I'm not going to get a job in journalism at my age but its something I can do in my spare time. I could send you a copy of my CV to see if it can be improved But if get the job and manage to last a year I will be due pension credits July next year and who knows I may have problems with my knees or back.

I very much unterstand your situation is different, and I like how pro active you have been, this was in no way aimed at you. I was more targeting the fact that this thread seems to be involving young people (like myself) talking about the issues they are having with job searching.
Rincewind Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 I realise that. I would rather those at the jobcentre concentrated on the younger ones. Problem is they have targets to meet and it could be as was suggested to me, that they have to show that they are reporting people. I may not have applied for as many jobs as I could or even other people but I am truly limited. I was in a job for 30 years that required no qualifications or no brain power. I was standing at a bench matching socks up, folding them then sometimes putting them in a bag. Thought it was a job for life and I had no ambition to gain bucket loads of qualifications. Maybe I should have looked at other options but had no reason such as wife/kids to motivate or push meonto better things. I'm doing now what I may have been able to do when younger if trained right. Involved with media and journalism. But 30 years ago trhere wasn't the community section of it so I would probably have needed a degree. Enough of my rant. Plenty of training opportunties for young people but even doing them does not guarantee a job. Employer says well done equal skills to 49 others but I only want one shelf stacker. I've seen people, some middle-aged men go into the job centre with two or three folders of paperwork with all their job searches. Well done to them but it begs the question if they have done that much surely one employer would have been interested?
leicester4life Posted 30 May 2012 Posted 30 May 2012 Problem for me was lack of experience, got myself an apprenticeship with the ATA at Leicester college, been at work for a month now, if you haven't got a house to pay for, try it out.
Ross-Kemp Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 There's jobs out there it's just how motivated you are. I'm currently waiting on the results of interviews in various jobs but in the mean time I'm working commission only but it keeps money coming in. Again, depends on how motivated you are .
foxfanazer Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 I've just been made redundant so if anybody has any info on available jobs it would be very much appreciated
MooseBreath Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 I know where you're coming from, but what's the point in applying (and maybe accepting) a job you've never wanted/fancied. No self motivation (apart from the cash), and you could be unhappy which may reflect on the job itself, colleagues, and more importantly; your family. This post pretty much sums up why the benefit system is such a disgrace. You'll only do a job that you like, and if that's not possible it's fine because you're allowed to take other people's money anyway. We're all in this together increasingly seems to mean that the more honesty and morality with which you live your life, the more you'll be punished to accommodate people who don't even know the meaning of the words.
Finnegan Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 I know Finners that is the point I was making, people need decent advice not the shit spoon fed at the job centre. Like I said I would happily put a little something together if someone wanted the ask. But lets be honest, we are a nation of people who are to proud to ask... I do think a lot of people are hindered by their pride but I think a larger portion just don't know who or where to ask. They leave school with very poor careers advice and just drop in to unemployment. It all appears very obvious to a lot of us and people with more confidence and worldliness get very dismissive and damning of those they see as being lazy or useless and that just tends to compound the issue. I know plenty of people that don't even know how to write a cv, aren't computer literate and wouldn't have a clue where to look to find out.
ithuriel Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 When i was laid off i took advice on CVs etc., and looked into what courses we're available and had 2 running consecutively with the possibility of a job at the end of one course. The course with the possibility of a job only 5 poeple including myself completed, the others stopped coming along or just never started out of 20 to 30 poeple I kept applying for jobs during this time though the only job offer i had i could not make the specific time for and the employer just basically said if you can't make that time, tough I got a job and then a few weeks later was offered a second job but the job market is very tough at present with too many poeple chasing few jobs that are not the best paid or often the best hours. Where i work a lot of the jobs over this past year have been filled by Polish peeps who are a nice lot, work hard but are exploited by being paid less than their english counterparts.
AyewJoking Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 When out of work you are a statistic but if you got work as say, a shelf stacker in asda does everything suddenly become alright? I dont know how much that kind of work pays but surely it cant cover rent, bills and food. Especially if you live alone.
FoxesFan100 Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Just a quick heads up for any graduates who have or are thinking of applying to a company called Innervision Inc, which is based on Horse fair street. They are a scam where they pretty much tell you a load of crap but give you the job no matter what, as many people walk out after the first day. I should say the first day compromises of an 8 hour shift basically going from door to door trying to sell people crap, plus you don't even get paid for your time. Here's a review and all I can say is what was said has happened to me, so don't waste your time if you are thinking of going for a job with them. http://www.ripoffreport.com/door-to-door-sales/innervision-inc/innervision-inc-tai-hussain-i-78410.htm
MooseBreath Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Sales companies always receive a lot of angry feedback from failed ex-employees. The chap who wrote that sounds pretty dumb to be honest. If you accept a commission only door to door sales job what exactly do you expect?
FoxesFan100 Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 But the thing is MooseBreath, they don't specify what it is you are doing. And I wouldn't think that anyone would want 100% commission based job, they tell you lies basically.
Thracian Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Since when has anyone been obliged to create a job for people?. Create your own. The way employment laws are stacked against the jobs creators it's a wonder anyone takes responsibility for employing people anyway these days. I certainly wouldn't. But all you really need to create your own job is determination. Leicester market - and most others - have lots of empty stalls. Anyone selling, for instance, fabric offcuts would be on a winner in this City. Elsewhere fruit picking is in full swing. Leicester could surely accomodate more auctioneeers. People run their own buying/selling pages on Facebook. Countless gardens need keeping tidy for a less-than-extortionate price. There's always vacancies for chefs and hotel staff, whether through agencies or by word of mouth. The possibilities are endless and the outlay minimal in most cases.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 1 June 2012 Posted 1 June 2012 Also, some of the customers were ridiculous! One woman said to me 'this is £2', and I said 'yeah', and she goes 'its cheaper in Wilkinsons'. I'm like, wtf, I'm not owner of Sainsbury's. You ought to work in Lidl mate, its a ****ing nightmare there. Seems to attract every nob going. Lost count of the number of complaints i have had about me now!

Lost count of the number of complaints i have had about me now! I used to hate it. Some people are horrible. You must get well annoyed, I know I used too! 'Go to ****ing Wilkinsons then!' Exactly.
Rincewind Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 I think you can cross Cecil Jacobs off your application for a job list.
FoxesFan100 Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 I can understand the concept of trying to be self-employed and run your own business. However I think most people in this day in age are a bit cautious as to whether their business would take off. It can either make or brake you. I'm not affriad to say i dont have the balls to be self employed.
Turtles Head Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 Get into catering. 5 years ago I'd never cooked. I'm now head chef at a successful restaurant. No qualifications. Met my long term mrs, travelled whilst working. Hard work, very rewarding. Plenty of jobs, always!
