Manwell Pablo Posted 6 August 2013 Posted 6 August 2013 Just enjoying life, sorry if my absence caused you concern Not at all just as long as your feeling less red faced now, you embarrassed yourself that badly I almost felt sorry for you
Darkon84 Posted 6 August 2013 Posted 6 August 2013 Interesting read that, and slightly worrying. Amazing how someone can pour a bit of pesticide down a sink and wipe out 15km of river Over here they've just discovered that one of the weedkillers they've been using contains dioxin, one of the worst toxins known to man. And they've been merrily spraying it on crops, lawns, verges, sports pitches etc for years Yea it's pretty shocking how many pesticides and chemical fertilizers aren't fully and thoroughly checked by governments and the EU etc, before being given a green light to be used. It's a case of seeing the £££s light up and then worrying about any side effects later. Very VERY worrying.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 6 August 2013 Posted 6 August 2013 We all want to help the planet. But how? You can't. It's going to end up a scorched, lifeless sphere of rock like it or not.
leicsmac Posted 6 August 2013 Posted 6 August 2013 You can't. It's going to end up a scorched, lifeless sphere of rock like it or not. Very true, in around a billion years Earth will be unable to support life. But in the short term perhaps it might be a good idea to not aid the process too much so that our future generations do actually have a place to eat, drink, screw and play football. Or at the very least enough time to get FTL working and colonise somewehre else.

Place your bets on what takes us out; Humans - 1/100 A Virus - 5/1 Failure to colonise another system - 10/1 A solar flare - 25/1 A more advanced species - 33/1 A Gallagher free kick - 100/1 Climate change - 250/1 David Icke's Lizards - 50,000/1

Though the first of those could easily be paid out under 'humans' as it would be human stupidity which would allow AI to become self aware in that way. I'm liking the look of the Gally free kick at 100's - any one of his strikes could start a random quantum event and create an artificial black hole that would consume the Earth. Might have some on that.
OzFox Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 We all want to help the planet. But how? "The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it" Would like to take credit for that but it was on the front of a WWF leaflet that came thru my letterbox The cow's are safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23576143 Unless it's gushing blood it'll never get past some of the crazed carnivores in this thread Yea it's pretty shocking how many pesticides and chemical fertilizers aren't fully and thoroughly checked by governments and the EU etc, before being given a green light to be used. "The people who should be defending the natural world have conspired with the manufacturers of wide-spectrum biocides to permit levels of destruction which we can only guess" Depressing reading alright. I had no idea these things were THAT powerful. If 5 billionths of a gram is enough to knock off bugs, it's not much of a stretch to imagine what it's doing to us when it gets in the food chain/water supply. No wonder cancer rates are on the rise. Edit: 37 million dead bees in a Canadian town (wonder who counted them all?) http://www.thepost.on.ca/2013/06/19/bees-dying-by-the-millions
Guest Foxin_mad Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Take it a step further it could be believed if we 'evolved' fully that it is unfair to kill and destroy the beautiful living flora in our world also, after a period of time we would all die anyway. Is it not disgraceful that beautiful agricultural flora such as carrots and potatoes are ripped up from their home, dissected and devoured for the delight of others? It is horrific that soya and grain is taken into a lab and genetically mutated into a super crop within an inch of its life. Any form of genetically modified food is very wrong, I would say anyone who is eating this needs to soul search and to evolve. It will go very wrong in the end messing with nature in this way. Just maybe its acceptable to eat fruit as that is not wanton destruction of a living organism?! Where does it end?
Rincewind Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 There is a plant that spikes iy victim then the spores eats it from the inside and another branch grows from the inside to out. And they say humans are cruel.

In parts of Asia they believe cordyceps is a cure all for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, limp dick...all the usual stuff. They package it and sell it as pills

Oriental medicine does actually piss me off some - it's responsible for the near-extinction of many fantastic animals, and having seen it at work over there I'm still totally unconvinced of its effectiveness except for clearing up coughs and sneezes. It seems to be mostly a dangerous (for humans and animals) charlatanry for me - one that's been going on for a very long time, admittedly. But then so is organised religion.

Yeah Oriental medicine does have a lot to answer for in that respect. Although if people believe in it enough, it probably has a placebo effect for some Use of rhino horn has shot up in Vietnam since 2008, when it was rumoured to have cured a politician's cancer. Some "respected" doctors are even prescribing it alongside chemo and radiotherapy. I guess if people are desperate enough they'll try anything. Meanwhile the rhino is disappearing fast.

That's the exact kind of thing I'm talking about. That kind of nonsensical lie is dangerous for the animals (because they're the ones getting shot and their horns hacked off) and it's dangerous for the humans (stopping them getting proper treatment). So no one wins apart from the poachers and their intermediaries who make thousands for every horn. Worse though is them getting shot for remedies that can improve virility. That's not even under the pretense of saving lives, it's just so some rich old cvnt can impress his young wife/girlfriend/whoever. Fellas - that's what Viagra is for and it's a damn sight cheaper and more humane.
Guest MattP Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 Not done one of these for a while. The Gaucho in Manchester, always know what you get with the Argentines as they are masters of the steak but this was a beauty. Rare and Huge, an inch of blood on the plate after and if the place wasn't so posh I would have taken some bread to it.

The thing with rhino horn especially is that you'd get the same benefit from chewing your fingernails or eating your own hair. It's all made of keratin.

Rare and Huge, an inch of blood on the plate after and if the place wasn't so posh I would have taken some bread to it. I doubt it, there's no blood in a steak, even when blue. It's myoglobin, not haemoglobin. Looks delicious though. As for lab-culture meat; well: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=test-tube-burger-lab-culture at 325k per burger we're quite a distance off it being in a position to replace proper meat.
OzFox Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 You get these daft stories about fake meat all the time is these silly left wing rags. Except the silly right wing rags have been covering the same story. With some gusto I might add. Although the Times says it'll never work because "a primitive instinct in carnivores makes us relish the kill" I wouldn't worry. We'll all be on our third heart attacks before lab meat makes it onto the supermarket shelves
Rincewind Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 I think it may look better when left wing is inserted after silly.

Although the Times says it'll never work because "a primitive instinct in carnivores makes us relish the kill" I wouldn't worry. We'll all be on our third heart attacks before lab meat makes it onto the supermarket shelves How many times do I say to say most meat eaters would rather have a heart attack ten years earlier and eat it? Meat is one of a handful of things that makes life absolutely sensational. I'm not going to sacrifice that for my whole life just for an extra few years at the end where you'll probably be shitting yourself anyway. Even if your lab meat did turn up do you still really think out in the countryside we won't be able to get the real stuff on the black market. Behave, if anything it would be even crueler to animals as you would push the abattiors and farmers underground and the rules and relegations around the kill and living standards would fly out of the window. You remind me of these people who want to ban boxing that don't seem to realise how many more brain injuries and deaths it being unregulated would cause.

So if someone eventually manages to grow the perfect steak in a lab, one that is indistinguishable from the real thing, you'd still rather go and knock off a cow? Must admit the thought of shady characters meeting in barns across the country does make me laugh. Underground abattoirs...get real. And nobody is trying to ban your precious meat, just trying to find a morally suitable alternative
MooseBreath Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 What's the consensus among the veggies on animals like jelly fish which don't have a brain or the ability to feel pain? Ok to eat or no?
Finnegan Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 What's the consensus among the veggies on animals like jelly fish which don't have a brain or the ability to feel pain? Ok to eat or no? I've eaten a sea urchin, it was vile, I wouldn't bother.
