first choice strikers

How anyone can see past Beckford and Nuge at the moment really surprises me, both cracking strikers at this level. All the other strikers we have offer something different so we could play Futacs if teams have come and parked the bus and we need a battering ram, or Schlupp/Waggy if we need a bit more pace (as if Beckford doesn't have enough already).

They're both good (particularly Nugent) but I don't think they ever formed a great partnership, and possession is definitely an issue upfront. No harm in adding to the squad - neither player has left, and I'm guessing they'll still attack together often.

But like you pointed out about parking the bus - classic case - the F****t home game was a awful last season, we barely had a chance on goal. With options in Futacs and Vardy now we can really shake a game up hopefully, or send out a convincing 3 from the off. If someone parks the bus, slash it's feckin' tyres!

We need more!! lol

We have loads but there's a huge difference between quality and quantity.

We saw that Beckford wasn't good enough last season... Let's hope those who claim he's a 'twenty league goal a season' striker are correct.

Futacs remains a relative unknown quantity.

Even this forum is completely split on Waghorn.

Vardy needs to make the step up.

The kids remain potentially good but it's a major ask to introduce them this season.

Personally, and this is just personally, I would have liked to have seen us sign a proven goalscorer at this level.

McCormack at Leeds was banging them in for most of last season. I'd have liked to have seen a player like him at the club, or similar.

Shoot me down in flames if you want to for 'knocking Nige' or not being a real fan.

Tis just my opinion.

Pleasure in it *shakes fist lol

You have a point in terms of quality : quantity. I believe however the Beckford is a good player - his attitude, effort and finishing looked good on saturday morning.

Any partnership will do as long as it's not Beckford and Nugent as for me they are too similar ( both like to make runs in behind and have the ball played through to them ). Don't know if it will be the same with Vardy playing up there as he hasn't played at this level but think he should start as he will be hungary to prove himself. Don't really know at lot about Futacs so can see him coming off the bench when we need him for a bit of muscle up front like Howard did.

Futacs and Beckford for me.

I can't believe anybody would look at our striking options and decide this was our best option

I can't believe, that you can't believe, that someone would post something like that one here.

But Futacs might strike up a similar partnership as Becchio did at Leeds, where Beckford was prolific, so maybe it is believable.

Beckford doesn't even need to be a 20-goal-a-season striker IMO, if he manages around 15 league goals he will have had a good season, if he gets more - even better. If you look at our main striking options - and you can asbsolutely forget the kids, including Schlupp, for this season as far as I'm concerned - we've got Becks and Nugent leading the line and Vardy, Futacs and Waghorn as back-up, although this could change depending on performances throughout the season obviously. If the main two score around 25 - 30 between them and the others chip in with around 5 goals each - and I think they're all capable of that - that will be more than enough from our strikers.

What we need is goals from midfield and defence - in the best Championship sides, the goals come from all over. Our defenders need to be much more of a threat from set pieces and in terms of our midfield, we just need more goals. Gallagher's always worth a few, Marshall's scored some beauties and if Andy King finds where he left his shooting boots, or we sign someone like Koren, then I think we can expect more of a contribution from midfield this season.

The problem with proven goalscorers in this league is that they come at a premium - we only need to look at the protracted Nicky Maynard saga to see that. Pearson tried to get hold of one of the best goalscorers in this league in Billy Sharp, but - if rumours are to be believed - he turned us down because we wouldn't offer him massive wages. You can't seem to get top quality (or in the case of Matt Mills, distinctly average quality) in this league without getting your pants pulled down. It's worse for us as well as we're seen as having a bit of cash to chuck around. I'd rather we brought in players like Futacs and Vardy who are a much lower risk than spend a lot of money gambling on one player.

Besides, a proven goalscorer at one club is not guarenteed to be a proven goalscorer at another club. Just ask Fernando Torres...

One striker will leave imo! I think Vardy will start alongside nugent and if beckford is the bench player he will soon throw his toys out the pram and ask to leave! Schulpp will be loaned out.

In the nicest possible way, I cant wait for Beckford to prove you wrong lol. I think all three of Beckford, Nuge and Vardy will get roughly equal pitch time and goals, and its going to be a tough decision for Nige who to leave out. This is assuming, of course, that he doesn't play Vardy on the wing.....

I see people are still judging the Nugent/Beckford partnership on goals and are completely disregarding the fact that they're both rubbish in the air, can't hold the ball with their back to goal and are quite often static leaving the midfield with nowhere to go except sideways or backwards. It was not a good partnership. I'd start with Futacs and anyone of Nugent/Beckford/Vardy depending on who impresses in the friendlies. Apparently, Beckford is favourite to be the championship top scorer this season

Nail on the head.

Nail on the head.

I know but some people just don't get it and seem to be basing their opinions only on goalscoring ability of individuals not whether the partnership actually works or not. I think they need to stop playing football manager games and look at what actually happens on the pitch

As things stand now, I'd be very surprised if Pearson doesn't go for his favoured 4-4-2 with Dyer out left, Gally out right and Nugent/Beckford up front.

You can usually predict it.

Are you doing this just to depress me?

All these signings and we'll still end up woth Dire and girlygirl?

Please god nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Ben Marshall, what are you planning on doing this season? :dunno:
