But I'm personally struggling to discuss the various merits and attributes of our new players simply because I don't have the merest clue whether they are any good or not. The Sunderland game gives me the opportunity to see some of them for myself for the first time. Plus I'll be meeting the boys after the game to discuss them. Happy days!

It is real, but if the first game vs Torquay was at home you would get a decent crowd, my betting is it would be bigger than the Sunderland game. The fact that early rounds of the cup are usually after the first couple of league games is why people have no enthusiasm. It's exactly the desperation to see the new players that makes people go to a friendly like Sunderland. Once the league starts people prioritise and would rather see the league games, plus the early cup games are not in the season ticket price.

But if fans continue to pay it then it'll never change.
MrSpaM Posted 8 August 2012 Posted 8 August 2012 I think the main reason i'm going to this is because i think the squad we put out will be pretty much what we are going to start the season with so it'l give you a good idea of how the team is shaping up, that and i'm itching for the season to start. Dont think paying a tenner for that is too steep personally.

Yep, what chance have you got of trying to get people to stop paying £35 for Leeds away when they'll cough up £15 of their hard earned for stuff like this.......

If they had any sense, assuming they're ready they could have used it to check out the new card systems rather than wait for the first game.

It's quite frankly ludicrous that season tickets holders have to pay extra to watch a home pre season friendly, remember the days when the first three cup games were free!

Agree, but what I'm saying is the cup has changed now and the first round is before the season. So if we had Torquay at home then I think the attendance would be bigger than the Sunderland game. It would be the first look at new players and it would be competitive.
Guest Posted 8 August 2012 Posted 8 August 2012 remember the days when the first three cup games were free! FFS, how many more times does this have to be explained..... Cup games were NOT free. They were part of the ST package, hence them being used as credits to your ST if we did not play any, or all of the three home fixtures. One season at Filbo, I had a huge discount on my ST as we didn't have a single home game. The club did away with including Cup tickets after the last time we had a Cup game included (by this point, the Club had gone from three to one Cup ticket), which was Crewe. The Club apparently made a loss on this fixture, as all STHs have to be included in the attendance, but not all STHs attended. Further, fans were disgruntled they couldn't pick and choose which Cup games they used the ticket for, saying they didn't see why they should waste their ticket on a home game against a piddling little side in the early stages of the Cup, thus demonstrating including Cup tickets in the ST package is a compete waste of time.

People would moan at that though wouldn't they? I see your point, but if they were £5....well they could make it free to all season ticket holders couldn't they? Guarentee almost 13,000 (Or however many STH's there are - obviously a few would be on holiday and some might just not bother turning up) people there, they would make abit of money back on food, drink and merchandising making profit, e.t.c. Also I think the making money on food and drink theory won't actually make the club money as they sub contract a company in for catering - That always used to be the case anyway. I'm not sure if i'm going or not yet, i'll decide on the day, I probably will end up going though.

With you totally on this Col, looking forward to seeing the lads I've not seen play and how the team shapes up /formation etc. The mrs wants me to do some painting & I've told her it's a can't miss match
