Matt Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Whilst no statement to this effect has been issued, reports are circulating in Coventry that the stadium management company at the Ricoh are contemplating shutting Coventry City FC out of the ground for their first home game of the season against Sheffield United tomorrow night. The exercise of this nuclear option would be very serious. The Sky Blues would then be unable to fulfill their fixtures and the usual consequence of that is expulsion from the Football League, although the league would not want to lose a club. Given that a court ruling gave Coventry City more time to pay, such an action might not be viewed favourably from a legal perspective even though the club is clearly in breach of its tenancy agreement. To me this looks like the latest act of brinkmanship in a long drawn out negotiating process. Apparently, further talks are set for tomorrow morning and hopefully both parties will step back from the brink and come to a mutually accepted compromise. Without a football tenant, the Ricoh would lose much of its purpose. However, the stadium management has become exasperated by the length of the discussions. They still have to meet the capital and running costs of the stadium. For their part Coventry City FC claim that they cannot afford to pay £100,000 a month in rent when they are in League 1, although they spend far more on player wages. An acceptable compromise might be for the rent owed from April to be paid and for a reduced rent to be agreed from now on. http://www.footballeconomy.com/content/could-coventry-be-shut-out-ricoh Can't see it happening personally.
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 I can't see this happening unless Coventry really play hard ball, the management company would be cutting their nose off to spite their face. They do make some serious money from the other parts of the Ricoh though; so the place would probably survive without them.

It has exhibition halls, hotel, casino, concert venue, it could easily be a rival to the NEC, it had a gym there. It seems like the rent Coventry pay are supposed to pay is £100k but at the end of the day if Coventry haven't paid that bill for 5 months or so why not kick them out?

Aye, but if they can reach a settlement for a slightly lower level of rent that Coventry can afford why throw them out? There aren't many venues that could go forego that amount of money. Still, you are right. Coventry need the Ricoh Arena more than the Ricoh Arena needs them.

Stig the Lawnmower Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Much as most of us see cov as a joke, if true, this would not be good for football. lets hope it's resolved to the benefit of both parties.
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 I do see Coventry as a bit of a joke, and a lot of their fans come across as absolute troglodytes, but I don't want to see any club thrown out of the league and go out of existence. I hope they can turn things around, and I think they will. Throwing them out of the Ricoh would benefit nobody.
THEFATBASTARD Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Not before time.... they should pay what they owe...like we all have to...bunch of chancers...
Danizen Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 No one made contingency plans in case of relegation? Heads shoud roll on both sides for that shocking oversight.
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Definitely. I can see it from both sides really. It's unfair on the stadium's operators to be out of pocket because Coventry have been relegated and want cheaper rent, but at the same time Coventry's attendances are likely to fall below 10,000 for many games this season and that £100k a month will be even harder to find than it already was.
Daggers Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Fine - let the stadium owners find someone else to pay them £100,000 per month. If I ran Cov then I'd happily relocate to a parks pitch rather than be held to ransom.

They can have our pitch on Victoria Park for half the price, £50k a month and it's theres They don't need stands for fans anyway
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 The only alternative if the worst did happen would be a groundshare with someone, or perhaps doing what Rotherham/Brighton had to do and convert an athletics stadium. Unlikely to come to that though.
Danizen Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 The only alternative if the worst did happen would be a groundshare with someone. Somewhere local? Somewhere with easy access via a motorway? Somewhere with a blue motif?Shit!
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Somewhere local? Somewhere with easy access via a motorway? Somewhere with a blue motif? Shit! They wouldn't share with a team who actually cared about them.... Shit.

Daggers Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Ladak is really keen to groundshare at Nonce Park, that could easily accommodate all of Cov's fans.
Guest Bilo Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 I imagine the emergency option would be something like the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Closest facility with a half reasonable capacity of about 12,500.
Poznan34 Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 I imagine the emergency option would be something like the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Closest facility with a half reasonable capacity of about 12,500. More than enough for Cov then!
jonthefox Posted 20 August 2012 Posted 20 August 2012 Ladak is really keen to groundshare at Nonce Park, that could easily accommodate all of Cov's fans. Is that place for real?. It would suit half thier fans to a t.
MPH Posted 21 August 2012 Posted 21 August 2012 Feel sorry for them. Me too. Poor owners havnt been paid for 5 months.
Finnegan Posted 21 August 2012 Posted 21 August 2012 Is that place for real?. It would suit half thier fans to a t. I assume it's a nickname for Nene Park.
