As shit as it seems it was still better than at least 3 teams in that division at the time & probably better than about 6 to 10 if managed well.

Still, relegation was a good thing IMO

I agreed until we let Pearson go the first time round and brought in Sousa. Quite literally undid all our good work over those two years having made the playoffs and held us back because of it. Big shame IMO, hopefully we can still make a real go of it this season.

How did relegation hold us back a year? We would have still just continued buying crap upon crap whereas after relegation we really took a complete evaluation of everything. In came a 'lesser known' manager who actually had a plan, unlike those before him. That season definitely made us more organised than we had been in around 5 years prior.

lesser manager?? we had rob kelly, martin allen and ian hollaway prior to pearson.

i'm just saying we could of built on staying up, maybe a mid table finish? and build on from there

He was definitely a lesser known manager, many where left going 'who' when Pearson was originally appointed. At least people knew who 'Mad Dog' and Ollie were before him.

We definitely wouldn't. Relegation helped us, a lot. If you can't see that there's nothing I can say to convince you.

How do you know that?

Maybe we would have apointed Pearson and he'd have done what he ended up doing anyway. Who's to say we wouldn't have done better the next season because we'd have appointed a better manager (I seem to remember strong rumours we would have let Ollie go anyway). ?

This idea that 1) we're in a much better position now and 2) that we are in that position because we got relegated has little evidence to support it, it's just one theory based on little.

I always liken it to going on a journey and you have two route options, you pick one and end up in a traffic jam and wished you'd gone the other way assuming it would be jam free, without duplicating the journey with two identical cars travelling at broadly similar appropriate speeds you'll never know.

Like you say we have no idea how things might have evolved, for all we know Mandaric may have sold out earlier and as for second guessing how different managers in different different leagues in different seasons would go, totally impossible.

The only tangible thing we achieved was being hailed Tier 3 Champions not that great a bragging right and the price we paid was to lose our 1 of 9 status. I know which one I'd prefer to have.
