It’s perhaps an old fashioned view but I believe that a full back’s main attribute should be his defending ability.

RDL has regularly shown he’s very good attacking down the right flank, but defensively he is often unsure. His positioning can be very poor leading to opportunities for the opposition – Wolves 2nd goal was partly his fault.

We all know Gareth Bale started as a full back, but now plays further forward to great effect. I think Glen Johnson would be better in midfield (although at last he does seem better defensively).

Perhaps RDL’s best position would be midfield, where he could develop his attacking abilities. I realise that would leave us short of cover at RB, so may be unlikely short term (unless Moore or Schlupp is played there.)

I’d be interested to see other views.

I can see both sides of the argument. He'd be ideal as a wing back in a 3-5-2 formation but I think there's more chance of us signing Ronaldo than Pearson adopting that formation

I couldn't agree more...

Look at Pearson's play off team.

Right back was generally either Nielsen or Morrison, both considered to be less good footballers than either Peltier or DeLaet.

However, a back line of Hobbs, Brown, Nielsen and Berner (I think it was mainly Berner?) conceded very few goals. In fact, we were the 4th best defensive side in the division. This was backed up too by a TEAM that could defend better. Wellens was younger and more mobile and Steve Howard could keep the ball when it was played up to him.

None of the aforementioned back four were considered to be particularly able footballers. But it sure worked well, both home AND away.

You say that but if I remember Solano played towards then end of the season and the play-off games and he is hardly known for his defensive qualities

I can't be the only one who thought he was one of our best players last night and he didn't give Stewart (someone who a lot of people absolutely jizzed over last january when we bid for him) a sniff.

Our defence worries me at the minute, very strange for a Pearson team.

I also thought De Laet was caught out of position many times last night.

But, he is very young and has plenty of time to learn.

He isn't as good as Kyle Naughton though.

But we fell short even in the play-offs, didn't score anywhere near enough goals to challenge for a top two place because of our collectively non-attacking defenders...and Pearson seems to have recognised that and adopted a more positive approach.

The big thing about full-backs moving forward is that others have to be aware of it and provide cover.

That season I don't think we would have got anywhere near top two.

Our success was founded on our defence.

And we very very nearly made the play off final.

I think we would have if Steve Howard had played in the first leg.

It's early days but our backline looks fragile. And the OP asking the question of whether RDL is maybe stronger going forward than he is defensively. From what I've seen of him do far I'd say yes. Same as I did with Peltier.

I'm liking De Laet a lot.

I'm impressed by his strength defensively and in the air as well as his prowess going forward. Perhaps his switching between defense and attack / positioning needs working on but give him time.

I told you all that De Laet is a liability, and will get absolutely destroyed in games this season. His attacking display yesterday, was eye boggling it was so good somebody like Dani Alves would be proud of the bursts De Laet made yesterday. Defensively he was poor, on that side of his game I haven't been impressed when i've watched him in the past, and I haven't been impressed with him in a Leicester shirt. Against Wolves, him, Konchesky and Moore let down Wes Morgan, and when you look at the defence you need all of them to come together, we can't rely on Wes Morgan to cover every other defender on the pitch, last night Konchesky was much better than Sunday; however it was that right side with De Laet which looked to be the side which Burnley poised the main threat, attacking wise he was brilliant, defensively he was poor, especially at the end when Vokes nearly scored, De Laet should be picking him up but was nowhere to be seen. Even in the early games this season, some of his challenges are pretty rash, yes he can make a good tackle, but he looks so nervous sometimes, he just slides in all guns blazing and gives a free kick away.

Full-Backs can attack all they like, but they need to defend aswell and we have had many right-backs who aren't capable of doing both, and De Laet will be one in a long line of many, that we have had at this football club. God knows how De Laet would of coped if he had started against Blackpool, and didn't get injured in the warm up, St Ledger and Moore did a great job contending with Ince, but for me De Laet would of got turned inside out by someone of Ince's calibre.

It's alright saying it's only six games, but De Laet is the type of player who teams will look at, and point to him as our weak point, he isn't the best of players especially defensively, and in a couple of games if he keeps putting in below par performances, people will jump on his back, and want him dropped from the starting 11.

Then I can say I told you so :)

Even though their goal came from our left side?

De Laet, although I agree with you he isn't the best defensively, is great going forward and has pace to burn when getting back. Burnley didn't cause us too many promblems because they were pegged back by our fullbacks getting forward.

It's the old saying, best form of defence is attack

Abso-fooking-lutely.....

For the hard of thinking,

If you are going to give your fullbacks licence to get forward then you might want to have your center mids provide some cover.... ;)

At present our fullbacks offer a lot going forward, set the side up to make the most of it......

Stanislas had De Laet's pants down in the second half, the amount of times De Laet was nowhere to be seen, or the amount of times Stanislas was able to cut inside of De Laet was a joke.

It's alright attacking, but a right-back also needs to defend and on that front he isn't great and will never become great at that side of his game because he isn't good enough, he has never been good, he is a very average footballer and that will start to show in the next couple of months.

Take it away Col
