Is anybody else feeling a little sorry for Martin Waghorn? I don't know whether it is since he had that injury last year or whether it is due to being ignored by Sven, but he looks very low on confidence and his touch has deserted him.

The bloke behind last night (why is there always a bloke behind?) was stating he would get up and leave if Waghorn came on. When Waghorn came on, he unfortunately stayed and moaned constantly about him rather than being as good as his word. I was actually disappointed when Waghorn came on too. I am a fan and I would've preferred to watch Beckford. However the manager made a different choice so I hoped he was right.

With the ball, Waghorn did not have a good game. Falling over his feet when he had the ball in the opposition box is a case in point, as where several miss placed passes. What I did notice however, maybe because I was determined to find something good about his performance, was the pressure he put on the Burnley defenders when they had the ball. For around 10 minutes before Waghorn came on, it seemed that every time the ball left our area, it came straight back. Their defenders seemed to have time and space to pick out a pass at will. This stopped as soon as Waghorn came on. He would harry them into rushing passes or making mistakes. I don't think Beckford would've done this, even though I think he is a far better player to watch.

My point is, maybe at the moment we should judge Waghorn on what he does when we don't have the ball, rather than what he does when we have it.

I do love those "threats". "Oh I'm never coming down again if he stays/ joins", "I'll leave if he plays", "I'll send my season ticket back if we sign him/ play him". They are never true to their word.

Anyway, Waghorn is out of form, as are most of our strikers. But Pearson still rates him and we've got to hope he comes good.

I really don't see how's he's getting on in front of you know who. I lost most of my remaining faith in him when he hit the post on Sunday.

Because, you know who, has done **** all when given the same chances this season. At least Waghorn has gotten himself into good positions and got himself chances against Wolves and Burnley, haven't seen a lot of that from he who shall not be named this season.

Beckford had a bit of a strop in front of us last night when Waghorn was getting changed.

Dyer handed Beckford one of those maroon bibs the subs were wearing and he threw it on the floor and looked sulky. I didn't notice this, this is the kind of thing my wife notices at football matches. Still, it was a little light entertainment while the game was stopped!

btw - Martyn Waghorn.

Why does anyone feel sorry for Waggy?

He's currently third choice striker.

Beckford ain't gettin a look in at present.

The whole Beckford saga is utterly ridiculous.

Allegedly 30k a week, four year contract and he's simply not playing. He's not even coming on before Waggy or Futacs.

You think that because Sven/Neville/Whoever put him on an insane contract he has a right to be ahead of them then, even though he's been doing poorly?

I sympathise with what you say about the pre-disposed knockers. There were some positives about Waghorn last night - including the pressure you mentioned and his getting into goalscoring positions.

But only he can make sure he's ready when his opportunities arise...cos there's not likely to be too many if he doesn't start doing what centre-forwards should do.

No-one wants to curb his enthusiasm but he needs to develop an attitude of cold ruthlessness when he homes in on goal. I just thought he got anxious - perhaps through trying too hard instead of being mentally calm and calculating.

But yes, he did work hard and quite effectively to a point and like you I'm not sure Beckford would have done all that harrassing. But then it's not his style and I'm just not sure if he's in the right frame of mind to do his own thing well either.

Waghorn or Beckford right now? I'd go with Waghorn and try to keep him involved for a reasonable period of time if possible. You always get something positive from the lad and while he's not the natural striker Beckford is, I think Waghorn fits more easily into the style of our team and what's required to make it tick.

Not at all..

It's just a crazy situation that fourth/fifth choice striker is our best paid player!

Do you not think so? I fookin do

Yeah I do. But I think the fact that we gave him that money in the first place is what's ridiculous about it, not that he's 4th/5th choice at the moment. Quite frankly I don't think he should be earning that sort of money even if he's first choice.

Edit: And I don't mean in a 'Footballers earn too much' way, I mean in a 'Championship strikers shouldn't be getting paid that much money' kind of way.

Beckford isn't getting picked for two reasons:

1) he's got a total attitude problem and doesn't try

2) him and his agent went up to Huddersfield behind Pearson and the club's back. Pearson found out at 1045 and quite rightly summoned him back.

100% true and will come out once Beckford finally leaves.

Would love to see evidence of this attitude problem this season.

You may be right but saying something is 100% true without providing any evidence doesn't do a lot to convince people. How do you know he went up to Huddersfield behind Pearson's back?

At the end of the day a striker's job is to score goals. Waghorn doesn't fill me with confidence that he is likely to put a chance away. Apart from a purple patch in his first season, he never really looks comfortable in front of goal and his stutter on Wednesday emphasised his lack of composure. In his defence, I think he contributes more to the team than Beckford. Beckford makes alot of runs which go unnoticed, mainly by our midfield and I wonder if he'd benefit from Knockeart's industry.I'd like to see Beckford have a 10 game run in the team to see if he's got it. Let's face it, Nugent has taken about a dozen games to score, had this been Beckford he'd have been slated on here.

It's ridiculous but I don't think I'd want to choose Beckford to fight for my job. He's talented enough to make a mug of me or anyone else but he just doesn't strike me as a Pearson-type player. He's a luxury and an over-priced one at the return he's given Leicester City so far.

All strikers have lean spells but it's what you get from them when they're not scoring that persuades a manager whether he should persist with them or not.

And of our four main strikers I'd argue you get the least from Beckford if he's not putting the ball in the net and I might say the same about our fifth striker, Futacs, too from first impressions because the bloke did get involved in his brief appearance against Burnley even if I wasn't too impressed with the orders he seemed to be under.

Beckford's starting to remind me of DJ Campbell. It's obvious he's got talent but he just doesn't seem to weld in with the club for whatever reason. And yet Grayson would seemingly sign him in an instant and he doesn't strike me as anything but a level-headed manager.

Maybe it's just a personal chemistry thing. There may yet be chance to involve him and revive his career but I don't see that Pearson will be desperately unhappy with anyone who's turned out recently - and that makes it all the harder for Beckford.

It's 100% true that's all I can say. Watch this space and read between the lines when Pearson says 'I'll decide when players leave this club'

I'd love to know how he planned on signing for another club without telling the one that held his current contract, even on loan.

What I don't understand if this is true, why put him on the bench with no intention of playing him, when he could use Schlupp who could play in a couple of positions.

Ok think what you like. My worry is Andrew Neville was involved in the scenario also. The truth will come out, always does.

Alright Paul. Calm down.

Beckford was being allowed to go on loan by PEARSON you idiot, he was stopped by PEARSON because our target moved elsewhere.

as for waghorn he's always had the touch of a rapist and when bringing a player on to play on the wing I'd pick him over Beckford as well

I agree with the first up comments that it was good to see waghorn pressuring the defence. There's nothing better as a fan than to see a player working hard when not in possession and defending from the front. However, the fact of the matter is that a striker is on the pitch to score goals. We need a striker to be scoring 25 a season. And if it's a striker off the bench he needs to be poaching one every 2/3 games. Unfortunately I don't think waggy can fill those boots. I know beckford can do this, although I agree with a lot of the comments about his attitude. So is Pearson the right man to get the best out of him? I don't know. I don't think so. But for me, waghorn doesn't fit the bill. Fit or not, he's simply not good enough, this was shown last night, a one on one, should have been scored. And falling over the ball in another great opportunity. Not for me...

Posted

Everything about the Waghorn situation is crying out for a loan deal. Just give him a month at a league 1 club. He starts banging them in and we have a chance of our old waggy coming back, he fails to do so and perhaps Nigel just accepts what he once had may have left him now.
