wakeyfox01 Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 It was absolutely nothing like what Sven played, he tried a 4-1-3-2/4-1-2-1-2 and used centre forwards (Vassell) out wide alternatively. This is a formation that adapts far better to the modern game than 4-4-2, 4-4-2 is becoming very dated in my eyes and even in this league (the kind of league that it's effective) it's falling out of favour. I'm a 4-2-3-1 fan and I'm delighted to see us playing it and playing it ridiculously well. This is our most exciting team in years. We played 4-2-3-1 under Sven in his first season with the loanees
marbelladave Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 I was pointing out how ridiculous the selections were for each position, so I wasn't being sarcastic, they don't fit that formation at all, and especially when none of those are used to the roles they were given. Sven went majorly wrong in that respect, we had four central midfielders playing in a diamond and none in their favoured position. I blame Wellens....... No, really, I actually do.........
Kitchandro Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 We played 4-2-3-1 under Sven in his first season with the loanees It was meant to be 4-3-3 I thought but it became 4-5-1 when we were playing shite
worthosoriginals Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 this was posted in hull city forum yesterday after the game; Biggest positive from today is that we won't have to go that bland ****hole again any time soon. A wild night of Chris De Burgh remixes and 'Terry and June' DVDs await for the Fox Army.

I do not think we are even close to playing 4-2-3-1 as yet, we are still mostly playing with 2 up front and keeping Marshall wide which is hopeless, still it is pretty early days and some of the signs are promising..... Two tough away games coming up, be interesting to see how we set up on saturday......

Thracian Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 I think you are being sarcastic in that post, in that you think those players suit that formation. First Andy King is not an Attacking Midfielder, great player, but look at his game compared to Knocky's, Wellens is in no way shape or form a defensive midfielder, as some on here are at great pains to point out, we have no recognised DM, what we do have is 2 box-to-box midfielders that chip in with defensive and attacking duties in Drinky and King/James. Fernandes wasn't a winger or a wide player, he is now used as a defensive midfielder for his current club, and was always better in the middle. It really was a confused formation from Sven, trying to crowbar the best players in and failing to get them ticking. I see what you're saying and agree to a great extent but i doubt that Knockaert will ever be the clinical finisher that King is. The two are totally different in their style with King a far more reliable defender and also quite capable of making imaginative passes if there are the sort of penetrative runs being made as is the case nowadays. Thankfully we don't have to make a choice with thsoe two or anyone else. As Pearson emphasised weeks back, we now have what he wanted - a squad in the real sense of the word - with everyone being capable of fitting into the unit but each being able to add something of their own. Happy days.
theessexfox Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 One box ticked, back to back wins. This season is getting more pleasing as it goes along. Now, however, we can be labelled as a team who only wins at home. Must turn that around. Good winn though, well done Nuge.
Guest Col city fan Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 The forum again seems full of 'the most exciting team we've had in years' and 'the best player for ages' etc etc I too felt that Sundays overall performance was THE best I'd seen in a very long time. However, let's not get carried away people. Many of us have alluded to 'Fortress KP' saying that our home form will most likely be promotion standard. However, the problem ain't at home, it's away... Three straight losses in fact. If we go to Middlesborough on Sat and play well AND win, I will start to believe we can really do things this season. No team will be near to promotion this season unless they can string together a run of straight wins, both home and away. Saturday may still be too soon for us to do this, but we need to see it before too long.

I think the most exciting team for years thing is as much a reflection on the dross we have put up with for the last decade as the potential talent we have with Nigel's nippers.
Guest Bilo Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 Hull fans saying Leicester is a dump. They might be right, but they aren't exactly arguing from a position of strength.

Bluetintedspecs Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 I did walk past a Dull fan as he was waiting outside his coach - just as he said to his mate "they came out in the second half just to stop us playing" ...... Just shows how the orange tinted specs work in the North East!!!! Only got Blue ones mate didn't realise they came in any other colour
Guest ttfn Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 At the end of the day I think both 442 and 4231 are good formations. If we always play one way we will become too predictable. We need to be able to mix it up a bit and play both, even during the same game. Being able to switch formations quickly can only be a good thing IMO. It's horses for courses. There are bound to be some teams that can't handle us in 442, just like there will be some who can't handle us when we play 4231. In that sense supporters of both formations are right. http://footballdiscu...tember-23-2012/ Those highlights are ridiculous. For the Hull goal it looked like the cameraman just forgot to keep up with play. Then, of 72 seconds of highlights, 23 seconds showed Steve Bruce being shown to the stands. Odd. Great play by Knockaert to set up that second.
LJS Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 Interesting point in the comments of that article "Our current points tally is the same as a record of W3 D3 L1 - for which everyone would be patting Nigel on the back" Also interesting to note that we have the same number of points after seven games as we did in our play off season under Pearson, as well as a slightly better goal difference. Our record then was W3 D3 L1 F7 A5, compared to W4 D0 L3 F11 A8 now.

Has anything useful resulted from Hull since the Housemartins?? Nope. And "Hull 4 London 0" just looks like wishful thinking on the back of Sunday's performance !

flowwolf Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 Congratulations on the win. I'm particularly pleased for flowwolf, whose wry wit - see how he refers to us as 'Dull', guffaw! - have amused me on a day when we were clearly far from putting in a performance that deserved anything more than 0 points I predicted a few days ago that we would lose 3-0, and also, though possibly on another messageboard, that Nugent would bag a hat-trick. I wasn't too far off. Maybe I should have known we'd bag at least a goal ourselves when I saw Sh*t Ledger's name on the team-sheet The reason for my pessimism, in spite of three excellent performances in our last three games, was that it was patently clear to me that sticking with a 3-5-2 formation against Leicester at the KP, which we all knew we were going to do, was a suicidal decision. Unfortunately Bruce Snr thought otherwise. I honestly think they should make me manager for a day. Oooh er have I just been mauled by a Tiger ? What like you have never been called Dull before ? silly little Tiger you, every one calls you Dull and it's not just your team it very accurately sums up your city too. ps the stars of Hull are the House Martins ( who ? ) and John Prescott yes you have a lot to be proud of. :D :D
Dan Posted 24 September 2012 Posted 24 September 2012 I do not think we are even close to playing 4-2-3-1 as yet, we are still mostly playing with 2 up front and keeping Marshall wide which is hopeless, still it is pretty early days and some of the signs are promising..... Two tough away games coming up, be interesting to see how we set up on saturday...... Aren't we though? 4-2-3-1 is actually very similar to 4-4-2 with the advantage of having better link up between attacking and midfield, but the disadvantage being one less forward. All you need to change 4-4-2 into 4-2-3-1 is the wide midfielders attack a lot (ours were Marshall and Vardy yesterday, which they did) and one of the forwards drop a bit from attack and link the midfield to attack (which Knockaert did). I'd say it was very much 4-2-3-1, a system I enjoy watching Germany use a lot and I'd love to see us adopt it long-term, we'll be better off for it. We played 4-2-3-1 under Sven in his first season with the loanees No we didn't. I'd say it was more 4-3-3 or even 4-2-1-2-1, it wasn't 4-2-3-1 because there was no outright attacking midfielder. I'll give Sven credit though there, we played some superb stuff.
