Fly to the moon in FOUR hours: The British scientist who says he's found the secret of Star Trek's 'warp speed'
Nasa is thought to have successfully tested a revolutionary power source
Claimed it could fly for eons at the equivalent of 450 million miles an hour
It is powered by a device similar to that found in a microwave oven
Invented by now retired British scientist Roger Shawyer a decade ago

This is just an improvement on the classical solar propulsion tech that we have already, As the article says, using photons to give an object a thrust has been a mainstay of space propulsion for some time, but the end product is always tiny unless the area the photons are hitting is truly massive. If Mr Shawyer has truly found a way to be able to amplify that and make it much more compact, then it will have some pretty serious repercussions when it comes to space propulsion.

However, such a device will still take a matter of years to reach the velocity stated in the article (2/3 lightspeed), so while it's a pretty big improvement on current tech of the same type (which would need longer to accelerate a payload of the same mass to the same velocity), it's not massively revolutionary and would probably only be good for interstellar probe missions.

It's another step forward, though.

Wonder whether we'll be able to send a probe to another solar system in my lifetime.

In theory we're doing so now...the Voyager probes have passed into true 'interstellar' space; however they're not due to swing by one of our nearest stars for another 25000 years.

To even think about interstellar travel over a time scale acceptable to the human lifetime, you have to think about either accelerating an unmanned and adequately shielded probe to an appreciable fraction of lightspeed (and even then it will take a long time) or developing an exotic method of getting around the laws of relativity as so beloved by science fiction writers everywhere.

I sincerely hope we do make the effort, though. The continued survival of civilisation, if not humanity itself, probably depends on it.

Masturbating Men Will Find Their Hands Pregnant In The Afterlife, Muslim Televangelist Warns

A Turkish televangelist has warned male Muslims away from masturbation - because it may leave their hands pregnant in the afterlife.

Mücahid Cihad Han supposedly made the claim in response to a call from a man who"kept masturbating, although he was married, and even during the Umrah", a pilgrimage similar to the Hajj.

Hearing the man's plight, Han stated that masturbation is forbidden in Islam and went on to say: "Moreover, one hadith states that those who have sexual intercourse with their hands will find their hands pregnant in the afterlife, complaining against them to God over its rights".

o-MCAHID-CIHAD-HAN-570.jpg?1

The self-styled televangelist simply told the caller to "resist Satan's temptations"

Tweeters took the opportunity to mock Han, with one asking: "Are there any hand-gynaecologists in the afterlife? Is abortion allowed there?"

Masturbation is a controversial topic in Islam, as the Qur'an makes no mention of it, leaving Muslim scholars and clerics to make their own interpretations.

A limited number of rulings condemn the act as haram (forbidden), while many simply put it in the category of makruh, or "disliked". Some interpretations also allow masturbation under certain circumstances, with a 14th century scholar ruling: "If a man is turned between continued desire or releasing it, and if this man does not have a wife and he fears he will suffer because of this (someone like a prisoner, or a pauper), then it is permissible for him to masturbate."

Feel free to follow Mücahid Cihad Han's interpretation, but we think it's a risk worth taking.

At least I wont have to worry about maintenance payments in this life.

Immigrants who beat their children should get special treatment, says judge

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/11663029/Immigrants-who-beat-their-children-should-get-special-treatment-says-judge.html

Immigrants should be allowed to “slap and hit” their children because of a “different cultural context” when they are new arrivals in Britain, a High Court judge suggested yesterday.

Mrs Justice Pauffley indicated police and social services should make allowances for immigrant groups, as she heard an application from an Indian man alleged to have beaten his wife and seven-year-old son.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said in evidence heard by the court he was hit on the back and leg with a “long belt”.

The father denied ever using a belt to strike the child but admitted he would deliver a “slap or a tap” to “keep him disciplined".

In her ruling the judge concluded: "I do not believe there was punitively harsh treatment of [the boy] of the kind that would merit the term physical abuse.

"Proper allowance must be made for what is, almost certainly, a different cultural context.

"Within many communities newly arrived in this country, children are slapped and hit for misbehaviour in a way which at first excites the interest of child protection professionals."

She added: "In this instance ... (the boy) did not appear to have suffered more than sadness and transient pain from what was done to him."

The family of Charles De Menezes are taking their legal battle to the ECHR (despite him being an illegal immigrant at the time of the killing). I'm not quite sure where I stand on this. If he didn't flee he wouldn't have been killed, tragic but true, but is the risk of him being a terrorist worthy of him being shot repeatedly in the head and killed?

And what evidence did they have to suspect he was a terrorist?

People fvcked up and a man was unlawfully killed. If someone is in a position where their decisions are a matter of life or death, they should be prepared to face extreme consequences should they make a mistake.  His family are right to pursue it.

As a liberal, the case interested me a lot at the time. It is one thing when terrorists commit an atrocity but it is quite another when the state executes a member of the public without warning, due to a suspicion that turns out to be wrong.

When terrorists are able to make us kill each other out of blind fear then they have won.

The response of the police was disgraceful too. Not enough was done to stop misinformation spreading (their is strong suspicion the police were putting out misinformation). Suspicions of a cover up. Strong suspicions of police lying in their witness statements. Evidence of written logs being modified.

The mission itself was either totally incompetent or more sinister, obviously we will never know the truth.

There was a lot of tension in the air after the two bombings days earlier, I think the person who shot him was probably ill informed (told he in most likely a terrorist) and when he got on the tube with a bag he lost his nerve and killed a innocent man. It wasn't murder but the person who killed him should have been charged with something, and the higher up's too they had a stupid plan from the start

Interesting  piece for any psychologists out there whether practicing or studying on controling people.

Best read during a boring spell like  when watching the Women's World Cup.

The article was started a week ago and has no relevance to anything you have mentioned.

I presume you didn't mean to paste in a petition about people being "killed" via benefit stoppage.

It is using psychology to get people to act in a certain way.  Nothing to do with  having benefits  stopped. Where do you get that idea from?  I have  some interest in psychology and the way the mind works and how people are affected by certain actions.

I posted it for others who have also an interest or studied it.

Edit. Aah I think I have just realised what I have done. I will try and find the correct link.

You presume (assume?) correct

Sorry. I corrected it. Ignore the other link. It is not something  I want to bother people on here with. http://www.alternet.org/culture/why-are-americans-so-easy-manipulate-and-control

The link you have posted is demanding to know how many people have died from having their benefits being stopped.

The number is 0 by the way.
