cc_star Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Bit of a distraction from the East Midland's el clasico (wut?)... and hit that boring time of day at work 26 years ago yesterday, on Nov 6th 1986, Fergie took-over at ManUtd The Daily Mirror has captured a snapshot of the Division 1 table that day and numbered the managerial changes at those clubs since that date. And if their figures are right (they have a question mark besides our name for some unexplained reason) we have had more changes (18) than anyone else in the top flight at the time. Obviously its not too surprising, especially in recent years. Although, not counting caretakers, we've had 8 changes in the past few years alone so over a longer period of time we're not as unstable as it first might look. relative stability is not everything though, Luton & Charlton's performance shows that... and West Ham haven't won anything during that time, whilst we have. Also note we were above ManUtd, ManCity & Chelsea The First Division on November 6, 1986 Club; Played; Points; manager; (number of managers since) Nottm Forest 13 26 Brian Clough (12) Arsenal 13 24 George Graham (2) Liverpool 13 23 Kenny Dalglish (7) West Ham 13 22 John Lyall (9) Norwich 13 22 Ken Brown (14) Everton 13 21 Howard Kendall (5) Luton 13 20 David Pleat (6) Coventry 13 20 Don Mackay (17) Tottenham 13 19 Peter Shreeves (15) Wimbledon 13 19 Dave Bassett (13) Sheff Weds 13 18 Howard Wilkinson (16) Southampton 13 17 Chris Nicholl (17) QPR 13 17 Jim Smith (17) Charlton 13 17 Lennie Lawrence (7) Oxford U 13 17 Maurice Evans (17) Aston Villa 13 16 Billy McNeill (11) Watford 13 15 Graham Taylor (14) Leicester C 13 15 Gordon Milne(18)? Kitchandro Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Hamilton and Kelly as well. In fact if you count Gordon Lee (after all that is a managerial change) it's 19.
Leicester_Numan Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Hamilton and Kelly as well. In fact if you count Gordon Lee (after all that is a managerial change) it's 19. In that case you'd have to count Evans & Gregory, Powell & Stowell and anyone else who took temporary charge
norfolkfox222 Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Howard Wilkinson, Frank Burrows. Howard Wilkinson?? really??
Manwell Pablo Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 In that case you'd have to count Evans & Gregory, Powell & Stowell and anyone else who took temporary charge Nah, Kelly definitley counts.
cc_star Posted 7 November 2012 Author Posted 7 November 2012 Howard Wilkinson?? really?? Yup, thanks to DoF Harry Basset http://news.bbc.co.u...ity/3735504.stm Although whether temps count is a different matter
Danizen Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Nah, Kelly definitley counts. ^ From memory Nigel Pearson Sven goran Eriksson Paulo sousa Nigel pearson Iain Holloway Martin Allen Big nige Worthington Micko Adams Dave Bassett Peter tailor Martin o neilson Mark McGhee Brian little David pleat Is the omission of Craig Levein intentional? I try to forget that dark period, too.
Manwell Pablo Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 ^Is the omission of Craig Levein intentional? I try to forget that dark period, too. Yeah it's missing Levein, Hamilton, Megson, Kelly.
Manwell Pablo Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Off subject, not suprised to see we top the number of managerial changes.
FrankieADZ Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Off subject, not suprised to see we top the number of managerial changes. thought that too, kinda shocking really....and to think of the amount of money we've wasted on hiring and firing them too. wont stop the "Out Brigade" tho....them sorta facts
Leicester_Numan Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Nah, Kelly definitley counts. My reply was about Gordon Lee who was caretaker after Pleat
acooling08 Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 It's because we keep hiring idiots Yeah, Sven was a big mistake. In that table we're above Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City. I knew Man City only got to the top recently, but I thought Man Utd and Chelsea were near the top since the 70s (behind Liverpool who won everything).
Kitchandro Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 Yeah, Sven was a big mistake. In that table we're above Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City. I knew Man City only got to the top recently, but I thought Man Utd and Chelsea were near the top since the 70s (behind Liverpool who won everything). That table is only after 13 games, though Chelsea spent a lot of the 80s in the 2nd Division. Man Utd spent a season there in the 70s too. It's no surprise they replaced their manager with Fergie with them 4th bottom. I've just realised why that question mark is there, I don't think Gordon Milne was our manager then: http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/page/managers.php So it's actually 17.
seenitall Posted 7 November 2012 Posted 7 November 2012 thought that too, kinda shocking really....and to think of the amount of money we've wasted on hiring and firing them too. wont stop the "Out Brigade" tho....them sorta facts If wecactually employed someone decent they might get to stickaround
5waller5 Posted 8 November 2012 Posted 8 November 2012 The number on the furthest right of a league table is all that counts ..... We are Top of the League, say we are top of the league!!!!
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 8 November 2012 Posted 8 November 2012 Apart from Martin O'God we have suffered some real duffers over the years havent we?
Far Post Gerry Posted 9 November 2012 Posted 9 November 2012 To be fair I thought we always has a good record with our managerial appointments (on paper) up until the post-Peter Taylor panic. Little, McGhee, O'Neill and even Taylor were all exciting, up-and-coming talents at the time they joined. Sadly we changed all that with Harry Bassett, and it's been a mess ever since. Pearson is a return to form; let's hope we stick with him this time.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 9 November 2012 Posted 9 November 2012 In my time there are only three managers we've had who are any good. MON Adams NP - need to keep him this time!
ozleicester Posted 9 November 2012 Posted 9 November 2012 Clearly the question mark refers to whether NP was still going to be there between deadline and print just joshin ya
