My Nads Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 My Brother-in-Law thinks Jimmy Bloomfield was Leicesters all time greatest manager, but I'm going for O'Neill, so I just wanted to know what the rest of you thought. Best and while your at it Worst Leicester City Manager. For me it's Best- O'Neill, Worst- Bassett.
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Bassett?!? Have you not heard of a certain P. Taylor? Best in my lifetime is O'Neil
Aus Fox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Peter Taylor easily the worst though David Pleat and Frank McClintock are noteworthy challengers, the best has to be oneil in my lifetime.
MPH Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 David Pleat was the worst that i remember... Peter Taylor was bad but i have never been so bored watching City as i was with David Pleat in charge... Now dont get me wrong Taylor was terrible but look he he had to follow? he was never going to be good enough as well as making bad signings.. another example of a coach with an ego...
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 David Pleat was the worst that i remember... Peter Taylor was bad but i have never been so bored watching City as i was with David Pleat in charge... I hear you mate. Not being old enough (luckily by the sounds of it) to witness us playing under Pleat I can't comment. The thing with Taylor for me was just the sheer amount of money that was squandered, we were ripe to build on what was a top 10 Premier team (thanks to O'Neil) but no, we were stripped of our assets and bought badly to replace, the rest as they say, is history
Kitchandro Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Gillies has to be our greatest manager, we very nearly won the double and played an almost revolutionary style of football. But O'Neill was the most successful if we're on about trophies. For all the nice football we played under Bloomfield we didn't win anything (Ok we won the Charity shield but that hardly means much considering it was only one game). Ive seen some of the football we played in the 70s and you've got to ask why our highest finish was 7th, we must have been inconsistent, and we finished way down the table a couple of times. Tator Peeler has to be the worst, it could be argued most would have struggled to follow O'Neill as the team was starting to break up, but still, he got it so spectacularly wrong and it ruined us big time. A nod to Holloway though, I don't agree with that 'we were already on our way down' stuff, he was significantly at fault and ruled over the worst moment in our history and for that he has to take the runner-up spot at least.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 The best manager? Easily Matt Gillies. He built the best Leicester City side I have seen in over 50 years of following City. We played our best ever football when he was in charge, and yes we almost did the double one season. The sheer quality of their football was a sight to behold. In a word we were, "Dazzling", and were almost invincible on hard pitches. Jimmy Bloomfield brought some fantastic players, but we were never quite what we should have been on paper. Frank O'Farrell was quality, but I think Martin O'Neil was right up with latter two, and in my view just about edged O'Farrell into fourth place. /
My Nads Posted 24 November 2012 Author Posted 24 November 2012 Your right Taylor was shocking, but then to follow that up with Bassett, it was just like giving up. Anyway at least we've got Pearson now.
Foxfromburbage Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Bloomfield during my years , which is why I consider Leicester to be a premiership side. If I was growing up now - would I be thinking different ?
OLD norfox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Agree!! And was followed by Mclintock who easily destroyed everything . He was the worst.
dayday Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Peter Taylor was the worst...had the biggest transfer budget and blew it,Martin Allen a close second...then Pleat,Sven..to young to remember Mclintock. As for the best it would be O'Neill...and also a mention for Jock Wallace and Brian Little who got us promoted on a shoestring.
Bayfox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 David Pleat was the worst that i remember... Peter Taylor was bad but i have never been so bored watching City as i was with David Pleat in charge... Now dont get me wrong Taylor was terrible but look what he inherited and spent? he was never going to be good enough as well as making bad signings.. another example of a coach with an ego... Taylor has to be the worst but how he got so long is beyond me. Sven got sacked for less. Can only be o'neill for me. Cant comment on bloomfield. I hear his teams were fantastic to watch. But what o'neill achived on a small budget at a time of big spending from, united, arsenal, liverpool, spurs, newcastle etc really was quality. Built a team. Greater than the sum of it's parts in one way. Ok muzzy and lennon had ability but look at what he got out of elliott, marshall, savage etc. In my life time only little and eventually pearson would get mentioned in the same breath. My god we have had some rubbish inbetween.
jonthefox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 O'neill for me although i think Pearson has the makings to overtake. Worst...Holloway , levien taylor etc. The list goes on.
teblin Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Best that I saw mon. Worst holloway just because he took us down!
cc_star Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 In my time. MoN on trophies, Little for making us consistent contenders out of literally nothing without which the success of the MoN years would probably never have happened. I realise that well before that era there was a far, far better era in Gillies but I didn't see it and can't judge an opinion on it Worst Holloway - by a mile, even worse than Sven.
Leicester_Numan Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 David Pleat was the worst that i remember... Peter Taylor was bad but i have never been so bored watching City as i was with David Pleat in charge... Now dont get me wrong Taylor was terrible but look he he had to follow? he was never going to be good enough as well as making bad signings.. another example of a coach with an ego... You were bored watching us under Pleat? Seriously? We may have been shite but we played good football and I don't recall ever being bored watching a Pleat team. Best O'Neill with honourable mentions to O'Farrell & Bloomfield. Worst Sousa. Anyone who doesn't even do fitness training in pre-season has to go down as a complete idiot and a poor manager
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 I am not so sure that Holloway was the worst. He inherited a team full of shite and bad attitude. Perhaps if he had been given the pre-season in League 1 then he might have made his own mark on the team. Having said that we bought in a better manager in Pearson anyway. Peter Taylor just edges out David "The Kerb Crawler" Pleat for the worst. Both massively inept but I still shudder when I think of all the money that twat wasted. Replacing Lennon with Wise, Collymore with Akinbadbuy. Absolute joke!! The best in my lifetime. MON without a doubt. Never gave in and on the occasion we would get battered by someone (usually Arsenal away) we were so mentally strong we would invariably come back and get a good result in the next game. That Arsenal 3-3 draw where they played us off the park for 87 minutes of a 97 minute game epitomises everything about that team and era.
MGLCFC Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Best - O'Neill by a long way Worst - Sousa (I didn't think Holloway was bad, just had a god damn awful squad to try a mould and although he added players, there's not a lot you can do in the January transfer market - unlike most managers he never had a pre-season and his own squad at Leicester)

Perfectly expresses my views, and I think most people over the age of 60 would agree.

It wasn't so much that we didn't lose under MON, of course we did. But you just KNEW we'd bounce back the next week and win, lose or draw, put up a great fight.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Best, MoN. Worst, Holloway the fvcking clown
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 Couldn't agree more. It wasn't so much that we didn't lose under MON, of course we did. But you just KNEW we'd bounce back the next week and win, lose or draw, put up a great fight. Exactly. With MoN, you just knew he wouldn't accept anything less than 100%. I know the Arsenal 3-3 game at FS is exceptional but even with 89 mins on the clock and 3-1 down we didn't give up. We've not had that kind of team spirit, will and determination for years.
kingfox Posted 24 November 2012 Posted 24 November 2012 O'Neill simply the best of my era. Worst of my era, well Bassett, Taylor, Sousa and Levein.
