Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 ...to be played across the continent in various nations, apparently. Discuss.
Milton Keynes Fox Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Can't wait for the potential of travelling from Budapest to Munich to Milan to Amsterdam etc...
leicesterisme Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 £££, couldn't give a flying fcuk about the fans and how much it will cost them. Wankers.
DB11 Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Surely this way more fans get to see the games, as there will be a more variety and people can just go to games that are local to them
leicesterisme Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Surely this way more fans get to see the games, as there will be a more variety and people can just go to games that are local to them What about the fans who go out there for all their countries games?
Kitchandro Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Surely this way more fans get to see the games, as there will be a more variety and people can just go to games that are local to them Well that depends which games are local to them. Would all of England's group games be in England for example? In which case, it's not really much of a Euro is it? If not, is it really fair that hardcore England fans (as mad as strange as I think they are) would have to travel all around Europe to see 3 group games? I like these tournaments being held in one country, a lot of tournaments are remembered for the host nations culture and passion. If they just went back to picking good footballing nations instead of hosting major tournaments in horrible places (and I'm talking more about World Cups than Euros here) I don't see why there'd be any issues.. By the way, is it true there's 24 teams at the next Euro? Another idea I oppose.
Simo86 Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 If you plan to go abroad for your holiday during Euro 2020, do not go to Europe! Flight prices will be ridiculous
ousefox Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Hope the final isn't held at Wembley, might be another excuse not to let us have a tournament for ages.
Super_horns Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 More money for the suits then..tough on the fans and teams thought I think to an extent.
Father Ted Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Just like the Qatar decision - MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ££££££££££££££££3
KingPowerLCFC1884 Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Can't wait for the potential of travelling from Budapest to Munich to Milan to Amsterdam etc... you be waiting a while yet m8.
StanSP Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 2018 Russia World Cup 2020 EUROPEAN Championships 2022 Qatar World Cup All about the money.
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 I'm guessing this is because the choice of Turkey, Wales/Scotland/Ireland and Azerbaijan/Georgia didn't take their fancy, but I still think it's a shame. These tournaments should be in part, be a celebration of the host nation.
Soar Fox Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 How will they decide who plays and where? Surely you can't expect a team to play in Holland for instance and then 4 days later fly over to Russia/Ukraine for another game. They wouldn't have much time to prepare or train properly.
purpleronnie Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Its understandable as there isnt that many countries who could host it, it gives the smaller nations the chance. But it just wont be the same spread out all over Europe.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 If they are worried about finances then they should just let England host it. We could host it tomorrow without building a single new stadium. Group A - London - Wembley Stadium & Emirates Stadium Group B - East Midlands - City Ground & King Power Stadium Group C - West Midlands - Villa Park & Ricoh Arena Group D - North-West - Old Trafford & Anfield Group E - Yorkshire & Humber - Elland Road & Hillsborough Group F - North-East - St James' Park & Stadium of Light
Voll Blau Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Hopefully the host cities will be in places (like Wales, Scotland and Ireland) that could never hope to host a tournament by themselves in a million years. Sadly that definitely won't happen though, it'll be in the stadiums with the biggest capacities with the final, no doubt, at the home of modern football - New Wembley.

Wembley is hosting the champions league final again next year. I think it's a shame as I like seeing different cities host it every year.
BunkMoreland Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 Quite like the idea to be honest. Provided they pick stadiums which are geographically logical for both sets of fans, I can't see anything other than this giving more people an opportunity to go.
BlueSi13 Posted 6 December 2012 Posted 6 December 2012 I'm guessing this is because the choice of Turkey, Wales/Scotland/Ireland and Azerbaijan/Georgia didn't take their fancy, but I still think it's a shame. These tournaments should be in part, be a celebration of the host nation. Can't help but feel that this may be the genuine reason. Turkey due to safety concerns with vicious hooliganism, the civil war in the south, and the turbulent Syria over the border. Wales/Scotland/Ireland due to the lack of stadia, potential lack of funding (especially the economically crippled Ireland) and the fact that three nations instead of one would be directly admitted to the tournament. Azerbaijan/Georgia due to similar levels of instability in those countries (especially Georgia with its recent war against Russia still fresh in the memory) along with a lack of stadia, thirst for football, and infrastructure. I don't think this proposal would be happening if one of the "bigger" solo nations had wanted to host it entirely.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 7 December 2012 Posted 7 December 2012 For me tournaments like the Euros and World Cup are meant to be festivals of football. You can't have a dislocated festival spread throughout an entire continent without sacrificing the carnival-esque atmosphere. I don't really care about opening up the matches to more fans - I'd much rather the die-hard supporters who follow England all over the world for qualifiers and friendlies (often against the most obscure and uninteresting teams imaginable) be given the opportunity to go and enjoy a 2 week holiday where they can take in a bit of local culture, stay near the team and get pissed up without having to worry about travelling thousands of miles every few days.
Captain... Posted 7 December 2012 Posted 7 December 2012 It's a bizarre decision, and doubt it would have happened if they had kept the number of teams to 16, much easier to find 8 host cities than 12, can't keep on dual hosting it either or we will continue to have 2 weak nations seeded as number 1. France 2016 should be good, even though it is 24 teams, but I just don't understand how they are going to handle it. The only thing I can think of is the top 6 seeds play all their games at home, the second seeds play their other games at home and 3rd and 4th seeds play in second seeds host city. Cuts down on travel time, otherwise you are going to have 2 teams and 2 sets of fans all travelling at the same time, then the group winners play the next match at home (this doesn't really work with 24 teams and a last 16, which is a stupid idea). Logistically it is a nightmare, I have no idea how they are going to handle it, it is going to put a lot of fans off unless some teams get home games, in which case it is going to give a huge advantage to whoever gets drawn at home. Edit: Reading a bit more, it looks like 12 host cities, so I guess you would still get the fan zone and it would be worth travelling out for the week. 6 host cities could work as long as they had 2 stadia, don't know if it would be too problematic having 4 sets of fans all based in the same city.
