This COULD be true but its hard to say.

If you are someone that tends to catch irons a little heavy, then playing off a mat is a more forgiving surface, because the club can ricochet off the mat into the ball and youll get a semi decent result. Its a bit like why its often easier to hit a 3 wood off the deck at the driving range. Its a perfect lie on a very firm surface.

Id suspect what also may have happened is, playing off the mat has raised the ball off the ground maybe a centimetre. So effectively, its shifted the lie angle of your club a little bit, the sole of the club is now sitting a little more toe-up off the mat, rather than more flush off the turf.

You may have compensated for this a little bit. It only takes a very small change to have big consequences, particularly as you increase the loft, the effect of lie angle becomes more pronounced, ie youre tilting the loft more.

Yep

and we got absolutely thrashed today in the last winter pairs round. 8 and 7

I’ve never felt so embarrassed to own a set of golf clubs

Maybe you're 'over golfed' fella. Too much of a good thing....;)

Played again this morning in Northampton, absolutely loved it.

Only my fifth round since not playing for around 10 years.

Driving was decent, a few slices, but the majority of them had a nice left to right shape and gave myself a chance off every tee.

Catching my longer irons really fat for some reason and not hitting them as far as I should, which is frustrating.

Really happy with my course management though.

Used a handicap calculator and currently playing off 21, so hit a net -1 today.

Should have been 4 shots better, took 7's on the 16th and 17th :nono:

I try to play to 5 per hole, makes it easier to know where you are going round the course. Front 9 was 5 every single hole apart from a 3 on a par 3!

Would happily have gone back to the 1st and done another 18.

Playing again on Friday in Bedford and can't wait. If those mid to long irons can click, I'll be nearer to where I want to be!

Very nice to hear mate.

If youre struggling with your long irons, perhaps give hybrids a try? especially as it sounds like youre a bit steep with your swing plane (fading/slicing drives, fat irons), the turf interaction might be better with a hybrid.

I've got a couple of hybrids and really like them. Just seemed like an off day really, not usually like that. My aim can be questionable (left or right, unlike the driver), but I usually hit the right kind of distance.

The irons will be alright on Friday, it'll be the driving and putting that let's me down lol

Which course in Northampton?

Played Leeds Castle recently having lived near it all my life and never played it. 9 holer but in really good nick at the minute and a couple of showpiece holes. Only negative observation is the greens are in terrible shape; maybe understandable for the time of year but I think they want a bit too happy with the sand. Probably expected a bit more April rain.

Unlike me, but the longer stuff was iffy and the approach play/chipping/putting was better than usual. Nice to have something different to worry about.

Got rid of my set from years ago and bought a package - and there's no 3 iron? What? Are there sites online where you can buy a decent 3 iron or is everyone using a fairway wood/ hybrid now? I'm a bit lost with it all. Fancy having 5-9, but nothing below a 5. That feels weird. I'd always have a 7,8,9 but then probably a 3 and a 5?

It truly is. Ive been to quite a few tournaments, and going to the tournaments give you an idea of how hard the courses are.

Being inside the ropes is incredible. I played with Paul Broadhurst, ex Ryder Cup player at Kiawah and around the time we played, hed just won his sixth european tour title at the Portuguese Open. Not only that, hes also won the French Open and the British Masters, so big big tournaments, and now has two senior majors to his name (imagine the players you have to beat on the champions tour, the standard on that tour is sensational too!)

He was long off the tee, but not silly long. But his ability to get pin high with irons and flight the ball up and down was really good. And then chipping and putting, immaculate.

Never stop dreaming and working on your game. You just never know, if you can practice enough and youre athletic enough, you just never know. I dont think Paul Wesselingh had a pro career before the senior tour, and hes done brilliantly?

Played in a Winter Series 4-5 years ago and Broadhurst was playing in it as prep before heading out to America for a stretch of Champions Tour events. Easy £1000 top prize for him for lowest gross hahaha, shot something daft in heinous conditions.

Atherstone and Nuneaton have produced some unbelievable golfers over the years, just a shame Hinckley never managed to (yet)

Thats so true, got Andy Sullivan doing well currently and Steve Webster had a great european tour career too

Played my first round in roughly 7 months yesterday. Safe to say I didn’t break any records lol great being back out there tho

Great to hear youve been back out there today mate.

I signed into England Golf to submit a score from Morley Hayes today off the back tees.

Its pay and pay but not bad at all. Greens were a bit bumpy i must say but its a nice layout with some really nice holes. It was playing something like 6850 yards off the back tees today with a little breeze and soft fairways so playing pretty long in places.

It was a par 72 but course rating 74.3 on England Golf app today so a very stiff course rating, and round in 76 today which im happy with :)

Come on Shane

I felt Shane played some of his best golf at Harbour Town without winning. The course itself and the set up was brutally tough and if you were on the wrong side of some of those pins it was almost impossible to get the ball close.

Which to me makes it all the more remarkable Spieth won, given the fact his long game still looks decidedly ropey to me, looks like he can miss the ball both ways which is a feeling good players never want. I think he fears the left ball and his preshot routine looks like its all based around getting his arms in front of his body, but then he can hit it high right too so still struggling id say.

Great shooting that mate, could only dream of shooting a 76 after my round yesterday lol

Ive just signed up to ‘PlayMoreGolf’. Think it was £350 for 100 points, 80 points at your home course which I’ve registered as Forest Hill and then 20 to use anywhere else that’s recognised on the system. Think it will really motivate me to actually getting to playing more regularly and get an official handicap.

That sounds like a really neat system, id not heard of that until you brought it up.

One thing i do like nowadays is the reciprocal deals that clubs have with each other. I play at Rothley Park and weve got some great reciprocals with clubs like Whittington Heath, Pannal, Coventry Finham which are all great courses. Think there may even be one with Royal Aberdeen but id have to check.

I think the good thing about the world handicap system too is as long as someone can verify your score is real, you can get up to any course you like, check what your handicap is for the tees youre off and away you go. 3 cards and youve got your first handicap.

I dont think theres any more rewarding sport to play. Ive played some other sports (not to any good level) but nothing gives you the satisfaction of playing golf i dont think.

Spieth's pre shot routine looks like an orangutan falling out of a tree

I was on that last year at FH before joining longcliffe

If you’re able to I’d look at changing to Birstall though as it’s a better course in my opinion (they do the Play More Golf scheme too)

Played Longcliffe this afternoon

I just can’t put a decent round together. Couple of 8’s after some bad luck and a couple of poor shots. Can’t hit irons still for the life of me. Very happy with my chipping and putting today though

PMG is a good scheme for those that don't expect to be able to play more than once or twice a month and are able to play during the week.  Cosby are also on PMG,  though doubt you could change home clubs once signed up.

Yeah at most I’ll be playing once, possibly twice a fortnight at a push so should hopefully be better value than a membership at one course. Thing with me is just finding time to get out there and play unfortunately.

They don’t let you change as I tried to change to Birstall midway through the years membership
