The Year Of The Fox

Your First Ever Game

Recommended Posts

11th December 1993, home to Bristol City. 3-0 victory Speedie scored two and Joachim got one, from that point I was hooked and in love with Leicester. Went with my Uncle Jim who also bought me my first, best described as a large packet of cheese and onion crisps, Leicester shirt.

In the same season we went to my first away game too 26th April 1994, Portsmouth at Fratton Park and won that 1-0, Paul Kerr scoring the only goal of the game.

My favourite player was Steve Agnew, I thought Jimmy Willis was world class and that I was honoured to have seen the Lee Philpott 'shimmy' live . . .

What a team. My 1st game was Man Utd, Filbert Street, 1997. 2-2, Walsh and Marshall. There was even a special, early evening MotD for that game. I'm not making that up am I?? Think it was party because of Eurovision or something.

I know, feel privlidged that i got to see the tail end of the MON era and the players we had then. My 2nd or 3rd game was my birthday where we battered Sunderland 5-2 with Heskey and Collymore up top. That still has to be my greatest LCFC memory.

January 10th 1981 Home to West Brom a 2 - 0 Defeat

First Away Liverpool at Anfield 31th January same year 2 - 1 win (when we did the double over them)

I remember getting lost after that game as my dad met one of his work mates as we were leaving, and we went the wrong way, had a few Liverpol fans try to get to us ended up taking a bit of a detour through Stanley Park ...was funny as we heard the one Liverpool fan had been caught and a copper kicked him up the arse lol but we ended up where the coaches were parked :nono: as a result we had to make our own way back to Lime Street, passed our fans walking back to the Station under Police escort...

1972 v WBA. Lost 1-0.

Memories of Filbert Street:

- sitting on the wall, behind the advertising hoardings to watch games (no Health and Safety issues in those days!)

- having to get to the ground at least an hour before kick off, so that you could buy your ticket and get in

- the people selling scarves, programmes, badges and rosettes on the roads near the ground

- the school getting free tickets for a match and sitting in the corner of the double decker stand (could barely see anything)

- the PA playing a record and then abruptly stopping it and playing the post horn gallop as City were ready to come out

- not strictly to do with Filbert Street, but buying the Sports Mercury at 6.00pm on Saturday to read about City's game

- the opposing team coming out first to a chorus of boos

- the hole in the roof of the North Stand, towards the East Stand that wasn't repaired for at least ten years!

- chants of ' Shipman Out'

- being in PEN3 and almost being crushed when a goal was celebrated

- being searched before going into the ground

- lines of police before and after games to keep the rival fans apart

- invading the pitch to celebrate promotion to the First Division

- the Kirby and West advert on the front of the double decker stand

- the PA telling us that AJ Kimble from Wigston had supplied the records for the game

- straining to hear the half-time scores because the PA system was so poor

- spotting that the tv cameras were at the ground and that we were going to be on tv ( Star Soccer with Hugh ' one nothing Villa' Johns or Match of the Day with Barry 'oh yes for the youngster' Davies)

- wondering how the tv commentators got up into the gantry above the Centre Stand

- Alan Smith and Gary Lineker advertising Leutchford Knitwear

- the innovative hot air balloon that covered the pitch, so that we were one of the few teams to have our game on when the snow/icy conditions came and therefore always ended up being on tv

- wondering whether you could see the pitch if you lived in a house in Burnmoor Street

- starting off with your dad in the North Stand/Double Decker, progressing to the East Stand, then onto the Main Stand and PEN4, and finally ending up in PEN3

- wearing a blue and white scarf, hat and gloves that your mum had knitted

- walking through what is now Mandela Park, staring over towards the high walls of the prison and wondering whether any of the inmates had every tried to escape over them

- going past Granby Halls, with a long queue of people waiting to go inside

- watching a game where players on both sides were numbered 1 to 12 and where there was one substitute each

- goalkeepers swinging on the cross bar as part of their pre-game ritual

- always a raucous reception for our goalkeeper when he took up his position at the start of the game from PEN3

- no ballboys and only one ball available unless it was kicked out of the ground

- no advertising on shirts

- no radical changes to the shirts/shorts over the years

- Steve Lambden reporting on Leicester matches

- very few, if any live matches on the radio

- unable to understand anything that Jock Wallace was saying

Unfortunatly, bieng only 23, I only really got into football properly since the 2002-2003 season. I started getting into it around 1997-2000 area but only vague memories here and there..before barely remembering anything between 2000-2002.

I always remember my uncle saying "leicester won 2-0 today"(against Watford first at the Walkers)..and for some reason, just started following properly and the success that season and being 12/13 maybe got me interested, and ever since been hooked(typical great timing :P).

So missing the golden era to enjoy it properly..my first game ended up being a dour 0-0 draw In the premier league away at St Mary's(my dad's mate is from southampton and gets me tickets for them every year were in same divisions).

Always remember that Ferdinand chance! but other than that a very boring game lol.

My next(and only other game Prem game) was a 1-1 Vs Everton. Rooney scoring, to see my first ever goal live before Marcus Bent 90th minute header my first goal from Leicester :).

23 Nov 1985...was my 1st game I was 8yrs old.

Leicester City 3-0 Man Utd.

Is there footage of that?

My stepdad used to have that on video, I wonder if he's still got it. This was one of my favourite ever games, Utd had won the first 10 games and were still unbeaten when they came to us. I think we may have been bottom. We'd just got Laurie Cunningham on loan and we ripped them to bits

My first game taking myself, with my mates was 1991, a 2-1 victory over Everton in the ZDS Cup

Was hooked, had season ticket then for about 15 years - went all over away too.

I think I can trump anyone's first game.

Leicester 7 Arsenal 2 in August 1963. Their goalkeeper was injured early on and in the days before substitutes this sort of result was more possible. But for a nine year old lad this was just the sort of thing to get you hooked, and, sadly, I haven't seen as many goals scored by us in a game since. The team of that era, under Matt Giiies, was a great team to watch, with one of my all time favourite players, David Gibson.

The History section is a great addition to foxestalk to re-kindle memories such as the one above.

That was also, by extension, your first look at one Gary Coatsworth. Did you go home thinking he was better than Cantona? lol

Are you implying he was an inferior player to Eric?

Date: 18.08.2001

Competition: Premier League

Result: Lost 0-5

Stadium: Filbert Street

Attendance: 19,987

Manager: Peter Taylor

League pos. after match: 20

Flowers, Sinclair, Rowett, Elliot, Davidson, Impey, Savage, Wise, Izzet, Sturridge, Akinbiyi

Might not be my very first game, but certainly the first I have any memory of at all. I couldn't have picked a worst time to start supporting them could I? Just when we started the slide to ten years of shit (barring 1 season in Prem resulting in relegation)

Pretty sure that was my first game! I know it was vs. Forest (though I cant remember the year) and it would have been between just after Christmas time (since it was a present) between 96' - '99, so I think it has to be that one.

I must have only been 5 years old, so I didn't understand much of it!

Line-up.

13 Kasey Keller 2 Simon Grayson 14 Colin Hill 17 Spencer Prior 22 Neil Lewis 6 Muzzy Izzet smallGoal.png 10 Garry Parker 8 Scott Taylor 20 Ian Marshall 9 Steve Claridge 11 Emile Heskey smallGoal.png
