I love the bloke and would have him back in an instant but let's not be pretending he's some sort of moral warrior. He played us like a fiddle when Leeds wanted him and he begged the board for a new stadium 'to move us to the next level' before pissing off before it was built. I'm sure I remember people spouting the same shite about Pearson when he came back. About how he was a man of real integrity. A man of real integrity who left us for another club before leaving them to rejoin us. Won't happen! Disagree, he knew Bruce was on his way out at Sunderland, that's why Sven was appointed and not O'Neill at that time. The owners did approach him.

He has a European Cup in his cabinet, and bigger, richer and higer profile clubs will be after him ahead of a second tier side looking at a decade out of the top flight. I wish people would stop mentioning him as a serious suggestion.

It's no surprise O'Neill works better with an Assistant Manager considering he was mentored by Brian Clough. The Clough-Taylor partnership was possibly the best partnership is English football, but Clough was awful without him as seen by his disastrous spell at Leeds. I'd hate to see O'Neill go the same way.

I'm genuinely torn by this prospect, it could just as easily go horribly wrong as it could go spectacularly well.

He is exceptional and would do great with the current squad. He is totally proven and therefore has nothing to prove to the Leicester people. He could take us on to heights again. In a way what we needed when we got Eriksson. The difference between them is that O'Neill will build a team.

I'd hate to see O'Neill go the same way. Bit harsh on Clough. He was better with Taylor but he wasn't awful without him. The problem at Leeds wasn't that Taylor wasn't with him but that Clough went at all. He was led entirely by his ego. Clough at Leeds could never work. Post-Taylor Clough finished outside the top ten just twice (including his final, alcohol-sodden relegation season) finishing third thrice. He also won two League Cups and made an FA Cup final in that time. If that's awful then I'll take awful here.

Not haterd of the man, seems a quite nice fella, but he has never been more than a good League 1 manager and we deserve better. When he punches above his weight he is play off standard just but most of the time he is clueless, demotivates players and tactically devoid of any ideas. St Martin is a Premier League manager with proven ability and is or has great scouts, can get us promoted and established in the Premier league with very little money needed. It is a shame it won't happen but it is marvellous to see that there are still City fans who dream of something more than hobbling into the play offs and watching potentially good players like Nugent, Wood, Kasper and Knocky have the life sucked out of them and play hoofball.

Christ I thought I was alone. It's like people are so used to shit that they will accept average. I remember what it was like under O'Neill and I want that feeling back. I'll never stop wanting that back.

This time he has had many injuries and to key players. He perhaps should have strengthened in mid-field. They must have someone lined up because if losing 1-0 to United is sackable form Pearson watch out. In a way he would be fortunate if he came back because the squad has some interesting youngsters and we must keep hold of them. In particular Wood, Knockaert, De Laet, Schmeichel, Keane, Drinkwater, Marshall, and Morgan. We need a winner and he is one. I can't believe how the team hasn't won the league especially in my opinion in a very poor year.

I'm too young to remember, but it must have been really boring getting consecutive top 10 Premiership finishes, winning 2 league cups and qualifying for European football. I bet the Celtic fans were bored when he won pretty much everything for them too. And what about Villa? I'm sure they find their current predicament much more exciting, who wants consecutive top 6 finishes when you can be in a relegation fight?

Excellent post, I am lucky enough to remember the play off finals the league cup wins the European games as well as the Prem league games and somehow was very rarely bored of this. So your spot on!
