I need to buy a bottle of wine as a thankyou gift, help.

I don't drink wine, like at all.

Friend needs me to get it for her but I have no bloody idea. What's a good off the shelf bottle from a supermarket I can buy?

Cheers!

Red or white?  Like I know about this.

If white, a lot of folk don't seem to like Chardonnay for some reason.

My OH's favourite is Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc.  She drinks a lot of wine, she should know.  Pinot Grigio seems popular too

Get a French red with a gold medallion.

Ask people that know about wine. I bought some gifts for the people I stayed with in Greece and I went in John Lewis like a hopeless wanderer, asked the people there and came out with a nice gift wrapped gift.

Buy anything bottle off the shelf from any major supermarket that's been reduced from upwards of £10 and you should have a decent bottle of wine. Avoid Rose, I like it but there's something of a snobbish wine-buff stigma attached to it, so it's a 'riskier' option than red or white. :D

If you're a snob you don't really touch white unless it's a sweet sauternes or similar to drink with your dessert or have with your Foi Gras.

Stick to red if it's for an English meal.

Don't go for blossom hill, it's terrible.

From the supermarket, Australian Wolf Blass is usually a good bet (yellow label, can't miss it).

If you want to look like you know a thing or two, just go for an Italian Chianti, whatever fits your budget - it's usually a safe bet, and never fails to impress.

Agree Blossom Hill is sh*te. If going for a Chianti make sure it has a black cockerel label mark on the neck of the bottle somewhere, apparently a sign it is genuine. Failing that anything over £8.

Don't get blossom hill it's really mass produced, it's not terrible but it screams "i couldn't be bothered".

My OH's favourite is Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc.

That's my missus' favourite too - she'd be fed it intravenously if she could I reckon. For her, it has to be New Zealand Sauv Blanc or it ain't happening.

She would bathe in Oyster Bay if she could.  Anything from the Marlborough region of New Zealand seems to do the trick.  If I don't show her the bottle, she thinks it's Oyster Bay..........& it saves me a few quid.  Oyster Bay is usually around £10 or £11.  You can buy supermarkets own Marlborough Sauv Blanc for about £7.

Usually find Wolfblass Yellow Label pretty reliable.  I don't know much about wine, but for around £7 you seem to get a reasonable bottle of red.

99% of supermarket wine is mass produced in the country of origin then shipped over in tanks to be bottled in the UK. The label tells you this if it has a UK postcode on it. This also means they use sulphides to preserve the wine (and to some extent, the taste).

That said, Wolf Blass is pretty good. I like the red label Merlot currently reduced from around £8 to £5 in Asda.
