Is the City of Leicester a dump?

One hundred new parking spaces will be provided at Watermead Park on former golf course land off Melton Road.

Good stuff. Now get the picnic tables back up and let people bbq there again. Or better yet, buy out the paprika building and get an activity centre up for the kids and a cafe for the adults. Decent plot of land going to waste since its closure sometime back.

When I was around 18-20 that was one of the busiest pubs in the Midlands. It got closed down in the late 80s, early 90s due to the noise and trouble it caused.

Well I'm sorta hoping if they're charging for the parking then they'll have a security guard/traffic warden on to keep the cars safe and check the tickets.

Wouldn't mind paying a couple of quid if that were the case tbf.

Why would they let anyone BBQ there again, it was absolutely filthy after because 99% of the time people couldn't be arsed to clean up after themselves

Edit: quoted the wrong post but the point remains

There are some right arse end bits of Bristol as well. Vicky Pollard was invented for a reason.

None of the councils do anything for their homeless, they dump them on small country towns like Shepton Mallet because the rents are much cheaper. The rural councils unfortunately have even less resources and infrastructure to do anything for their unwanted residents. There is a closed pub at the other (wrong) end of my lane which is now a hostel for the homeless. The fetid stink of unwashed clothing and weed coming out the windows in summer makes your stomach turn when you walk past. I actually know the fella who owns it. Ex-jailbird gone straight - poacher turned gamekeeper as he terms it.

This isn't the sort of thing you see on 'Escape to the Country' which in my opinion is complete garbage.

Yep and I've worked in that arse end of Bristol. Working with families there was not easy and really quite disturbing the things I had to report. Same goes for Plymouth and Exeter really. We really do get the awful end of the countries budget.

You think so? I didn't see any mess when I walked round there.

Maybe just a lucky time of day I guess.

I’ve never noticed it but I don’t know how long BBQs have been banned. I’ve walk my dog round there every weekend for the last 5 years.

Really wish they'd make more of frog island, I know some dvelopment is going on nearby but some decent bars off the river and canal would look great around there.

Update

Leicester City Council is set to invest almost £3milllion in a major highway improvement scheme as part of regeneration plans for a rundown area of the city.

The council is leading a scheme to create hundreds of new homes and businesses in the area now referred to as the Waterside area - where there are numerous dilapidated and abandoned former industrial buildings by the River Soar and Grand Union Canal, north west of the city centre.

The proposed road scheme will see the creation of a new 'super crossing' in Vaughan Way, along with other highway improvements designed to improve the link with the city centre.

A city council spokesman said: "Although funded by the city council, the work would be carried out by local developer Charles Street Buildings as part of a major £50milllion development it has planned for derelict land opposite Highcross.

"Two new hotels will be built alongside 30,000sqft of new office space, a restored former Great Central Railway station and a new public area to be known as Great Central Square, which Charles Street Buildings will pay for."

As part of a development agreement with Charles Street Buildings, the city council will provide funding of up to £2.4million for the new super crossing and associated highway works on Great Central Street. Charles Street Buildings will also meet part of the costs of highway works.

The Waterside development area

The new crossing will be built close to the Highcross Street Vaughan Way junction and will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the whole road in one go rather than stopping on a central reservation.

An additional £500,000 will pay for further cycleway and footpath improvements between Great Central Street and Soar Lane.

The work represents the latest phase of the Connecting Leicester programme, which is creating safer and more attractive routes for pedestrians and cyclists linking many of the city centre’s main attractions.

£80 million bid to transform run-down Waterside area moves step closer

City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “Charles Street Buildings have put forward a very exciting proposal for this long disused plot of land. The planned hotel complex will help transform this rather grotty area and help create a really attractive gateway into the Waterside area.

“As it stands, getting across the ring road is a major barrier for pedestrians and motorists. The proposed scheme presents an opportunity to address that and, at the same time, improve the route out from the city centre into the Waterside area with more attractive footways and a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.”

The hotel will play a part in rejuvenating Leicester's Waterside

Joseph Murphy, Charles Street Buildings director, said: “We are now looking forward to progressing our ambitious development plans for this important site. This includes the creation of two new 4-star hotels and one of the largest local office developments in the last 20 years, along with a major refurbishment to bring new life to the historic former Great Central Station building.

“A new super crossing that will allow people to cross Vaughan Way in one go is key to the success of this development. We have had an excellent working relationship with the city council and are delighted that we have been able to agree on a method to remove the impediment of the ring road from the delivery of a landmark development for the benefit of the whole city centre.”

A final decision on the proposed funding for the Vaughan Way super crossing and associated highways improvements is due to be taken by the city mayor on November 21.

Why don't we just have a vote on this one and put it to bed ..

1.  A complete sh1thole.

2. An absolute pile of sh1te.

3. Not quite as bad as some but still a sh1tty hole.

4. As cities go an A1 fookin dump.

5. Not too bad.

Personally I'm in two minds between 1 and 3 ...

Er, because cities can improve and regenerate so it's never set in stone is it?

The council needs to paint that easily-recognisable blue tower near to the train station (Premier Inn?) that you can see from certain sides of Leicestershire coming into the city.

It's an eyesore.

It's privately owned so nothing they can do now. I guess they might have been able to stòp them at the planning stage stage if they'd known it was going to be done.

Didn't know that thanks.

Who's trading at the old Leicester Mercury building across the road from there?

Often drive that way but not 100% what type of business is in there now.

Wasn't there plans to rebuild the train station and develop the surrounding area? Maybe it can get sorted then... if it ever goes ahead of course. Market Harborough station has just started a £50m rebuild so why not.

Not quite related to the improvement of the city, but it's always nice seeing someone catch a break.

This type of situation is really a case of luck, for both parties.

There was a news article yesterday in that a big percentage of people are reluctant to talk to homeless strangers in fear of how they react (drugs use) etc.

Hope the man found has now an improved, stable recovery to his life.

Thanks.

Feel that's quite a random thing to put in an area that's very commercialised (I.e. office-based type roles).

Plans for area around Lee Circle car park to be re-developed are revealed.

"Landmark multi-storey car park" lol

Skidmark more like. The area's a sh*thole. Basically flatten everything inside the Circle and start again.

Would be a shame to lose all of those victorian industrial buildings there though, they're the one redeeming feature.

The old Tescos that was beneath the Lee Circle car park was the biggest supermarket in the country when it was built in 1969. I remember going there as a kid in the 70s. Then it was closed as we moved on to even bigger hypermarkets. Now as we're moving to home deliveries the hypermarkets are being shut down and people like Tescos are opening smaller convenience stores.
