ealingfox Posted 26 June 2013 Author Posted 26 June 2013 He was recently voted Liverpool's greatest ever player by the fans. Add to that he's won plenty bar the PL and captained England and I'd take that over Giggs' trophy haul any day.

Add to that he's won plenty bar the PL and captained England and I'd take that over Giggs' trophy haul any day. Then you're a moron. Most United fans regard Giggs just as favourably, they just happen to have had more than one good player in the last twenty years. Giggs is considered one of the best in Prem history, has a massive trophy haul and the freedom of Salford, not to mention countless individual awards.

Giggs was never all that. His haul is purely down to longevity, he has barely contributed anything in the last 5 or 6 years. If you'd stuck him in a bottom-half team post-2006 he'd have done fvck all. Gerrard could carry 16 of the 20 teams in the PL if you stuck him in there. Gerrard is also considered one of the best in Prem history, and if people have any sense he'll be a lot higher up than Ryan Giggs.
Bert Posted 26 June 2013 Posted 26 June 2013 Gerrard is the only player ever to score in a European Cup final, an FA Cup final, a League Cup final and a Europa League cup final (that year when McAllister played). He hasn't won as many trophies some players have (players that aren't even better than him), but he has done what he wanted in playing for, and then being made captain, for the club he supported as a boy. When I define loyalty, I can look at Steve Gerrard. Around the 05/06 time, he was the best midfielder in the World, and most of the major clubs (Munich, Madrid, Barcelona etc) wanted him. Even Alex Ferguson wanted him to replace Keane, and Mourinho wanted him at Chelsea when they were Champions in England. He is an example of the complete midfielder, and there won't be better midfielders in my lifetime. (I do like Lampard, but he isn't as complete as a midfielder as Gerrard. Although he might score more). People always say 'oh yeah ha Gerrard hasn't got a Premier League medal'. This is, of course, correct. But he's played in two European Cup finals, and scored in one. Shearer and Fabregas don't have PL medals either. ... But this is why I love football. Everyone has a different opinion. This is why we have forums and arguments in the pub! Alan Shearer has Premier league winners medal. Fabregas has a La Liga medal.

Fox92 Posted 26 June 2013 Posted 26 June 2013 Alan Shearer has Premier league winners medal. Fabregas has a La Liga medal. Oh yeah I forgot about his time at Blackburn.
Manwell Pablo Posted 26 June 2013 Posted 26 June 2013 There are some seriously bad opinions in this thread.
Bryn Posted 26 June 2013 Posted 26 June 2013 He is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) players ever; a very complete midfielder. He can say anything he wants. !
Fox92 Posted 26 June 2013 Posted 26 June 2013 ! Obviously. I was joking slightly, but I guess he's talking about them being similar. Yes I was joking with the 'he can say anything he wants' bit. I said it was a joke. I even put it twice.
shen Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Why the heck did Steven Gerrard's name even pop up in this thread?! Fair enough that a few of you are fans of him. He's probably one of the three best players England have produced over the past two decades, but then I could claim Jon Dahl Tomasson was just as good. I'm saying that tongue in cheek, but my point is, those rose-tinted glasses cloud your judgements. I understand where Cruyff is coming from. He did the same to Laudrup at Barcelona. If you were to sell Messi, ever, then now would be a perfect time. He's had a few unreal seasons now winning everything there is to win (bar the World Cup), so you could maybe argue that he can't get any better. He's costing a fortune in wages and he has a lot of power at the club. With all the newly rich clubs out there, he would command an absolutely astronomical price that would dwarf Ronaldos transfer to Real. But as has already been stated, he said he wouldn't have signed Neymar at all because they already had Messi, so it's a cow point...
Leeds Fox Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Oh yeah, but I've only seen him a couple of times Seen him against England (twice) and recall watching him in a club game but can't remember what match. I don't watch European Football other than when a team from England plays in the European Cup (and the final itself). I agree some things he can do with a ball are amazing, but I hate it how everyone is like 'he is the best player in the World' after watching 2 or 3 minutes off him on YouTube. We'll have to wait to see if he can actually make a World Cup his own like all the greatest players do (apart from Best who obviously never had that chance). Brazil isn't in Europe
Fox92 Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Oh my, really? Please stop, next you'll be telling me Argentina isn't in Europe either
Leeds Fox Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Oh my, really? Please stop, next you'll be telling me Argentina isn't in Europe either So how was your post about not watching European football relevant to not seeing Neymar play domestically? Oh and Argentina isn't in Europe, one out of two isn't bad though.
Fox92 Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 So how was your post about not watching European football relevant to not seeing Neymar play domestically? Oh and Argentina isn't in Europe, one out of two isn't bad though. Ok I should have just put 'anything apart from English football, apart from when England are represented in the European Cup'. I probably put 'European football' because the European Cup is the biggest stage as a club player.
ousefox Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 lol lol lol lol !!!!!! If you take away one night in Istanbul, Steven Gerrard's career is the biggest flop in sport. For all of his alleged quality he's done relatively **** all, never gone to test himself at a proper club. Neymar's probably going to win a league title next year, La Liga at that. How many times has Stevie G won the Prem? Have you ever seen him play?! He's the best player England has produced in the last 20 years. Plus he's stayed at the club he loves despite them going to shit in a time where loyalty hardly exists in the game.
Fox92 Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 He was our best player at the European Championships last year.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 He was our best player at the European Championships last year. That wasn't much of an accomplishment
Fox92 Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 That wasn't much of an accomplishment Still got to produce on the biggest stage, still got to beat whats in front of you regardless.
Guest Bilo Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 He is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) players ever; a very complete midfielder. He can say anything he wants. Pele. Arguably the greatest footballer in history, but the bloke is utterly clueless today.
Guest MattP Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Pele. Arguably the greatest footballer in history, but the bloke is utterly clueless today. Pele's predictions are just too good Heres the top ten. 10) China 2002 Pele Prediction: China will qualify for the next round from their 2002 World Cup group. Outcome: China finish bottom of Group C with no wins, no draws, no points, no goals, as well as -9 in their goal-difference column. 9) Spain 1998 Pele Prediction: Spain are favourites for the 1998 World Cup in France. Outcome: Spain humiliatingly dumped out in the first round after losing to Nigeria, and drawing with Paraguay. 8) Colombia To Live American Dream Pele Prediction: Colombia will win the 1994 World Cup in the USA. Outcome: Colombia exit the competition in the first round, finishing bottom of their group. Their defender Andres Escobar is also tragically shot dead by an angry fan after Colombia return home. 7) Argentina, France & World Cup 2002 Pele Prediction: Argentina & France will both reach the final. Outcome: Both countries eliminated in the first round, France without even scoring a goal. 6) Escape To Victory Pele Prediction: During the famous film starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, Allies star Pele is brutally fouled in the first half by the Nazi opponents. The injured Brazilian claims there is no way he can continue and is carried off. The Allies are 4-0 down, and a recovery is deemed impossible. Outcome: Pele returns in the second half and inspires his team to an improbable comeback, even scoring a stunning bicycle kick. Even in fiction, Pele's predictions go wrong. 5) Ronaldo Is Finished Pele Prediction: Ronaldo will never play football again, and his career is over, following a serious injury for Milan in February 2008. Outcome: Ronaldo returns in March 2009 for Corinthians, scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games to win the Campeonato Paulista. Rumoured to be on the verge of a national team recall. 4) Nii Lamptey – ‘The New Pele’ Pele Prediction: After starring in the 1991 Under-17 World Cup, which also featured Alessandro Del Piero, Pele proclaims Ghana youngster Lamptey as his successor, ‘The New Pele’. Outcome: What happens next goes down in football infamy. Lamptey spectacularly fails to fulfil his talent, believing himself that he was cursed by dark forces. The midfielder shifts around clubs such as PSV, Aston Villa, Coventry, Venezia and Ankaragucu, without success, and endures tragedy in his personal life, as two of his children die. 3) Nicky Barmby - Up There With Zidane, Maldini & Ronaldo Pele Prediction: Nicky Barmby will become a world class star. Outcome: Nicky Barmby becomes nothing more than an average player, winning 23 England caps, and never even appearing in a World Cup. 2) Africa Will Rule Pele Prediction: An African nation will win the World Cup before the year 2000. Outcome: It is now 2013, and an African country has still yet to get past the quarter-final. 1) Brazil & World Cup 2002 Pele Prediction: Brazil won’t even get past the group stages. Outcome: Brazil win the World Cup.
Richard Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 The truth is Messi has far too much power at Barcelona. He must've had a massive say in the appointment of Martini as new coach and history shows that you can't fit in another central striker to this barca team. Eto'o left because Messi was given the false nine role through the middle an was fed up of having to accommodate him by playin out wide. Similar story with Ibra who was unhappy with the power that Messi had in the dressing room, so it's not too absurd to think that Neymar may not be particularly happy playing second string to Messi, especially given how he was seen at Santos/Brazil

No need really as he was 'the best' footballer ever.
Kitchandro Posted 26 July 2013 Posted 26 July 2013 Pele wasn't even that good by today's standards. Even if you look at his world cup highlights: One amazing goal in the final, one headed goal in the final, a few goals that were nothing special, one casual sideways pass under no pressure, one good dummy topped off by missing a sitter and one attempt from the halfway line that went wide. I'm yet to see a real plethora of impressive clips. You can't compare him to the likes of Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane or Cruyff. Or even Garrincha who played with him at the time, or some of the 80s Brazil players. But I'm going a bit off topic now.
