MC Prussian Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 If we were gelling satisfactorily then we should easily have won. In itself the result is unimportant. Do you believe we are gelling? Saturday will give us an inkling. You can't tell whether we're "gelling" or not by simply looking at the scoreline. "Gelling" is a process, not bound to a single game or a few pre-season games - it shall be revealed and enforced in the upcoming season.

Saturday will give us an inkling. I have to tend to agree with DT, as result don't matter as such, they are used to get up to speed and instill confidence and a bit of form.I can see why NP has rotated all the squad, and given them all a chance to make a claim to a place in the starting 11, but I would have played the last two friendlies with what I believe would be my best 11, and get them all used to the new system together, but I'm not payed a million a year to make that decision. But again MC has a point we will not know if the preseason has been affective till the season starts, but if they don't gel and they start slow np will have to stand up, and take the flack on the chin. I can't see it as I don't rate Pearson but its early yet to say wether he's got it right or wrong, but lets live in hope.

Agreed, but the same also applies to Northampton,.Obviously, I did not see or listen to the game, but that result still disturbs me.
MC Prussian Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Agreed, but the same also applies to Northampton,.Obviously, I did not see or listen to the game, but that result still disturbs me. I don't know how someone can lose any sleep over losing out to Northampton 2-1 in a pre-season friendly. If it were in a cup competition, I'd probably be livid (depending on the circumstances), but now...? And as for Northampton, so they've won against us - is this in any way indicative of how their season will develop? Are we to expect them to be automatically promoted just because of that particular scoreline? Way too early to tell. "Gelling" takes its time. Apparently, too much time for the regularly impatient part of our fan base.
allen10 Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Wood's Goal vs Northampton - Route one, great touch from Waggy and a good finish!
GingerrrFox Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Wood's Goal vs Northampton - Route one, great touch from Waggy and a good finish! Yeah but Waghorn is shit and has the touch of a carthorse.
marbelladave Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 I aree with all of that ... what i find odd is that it's still the case after a couple of seasons of the the same frailty. You'd think in pre season we'd have been showing some signs of learning the lessons from last year. Since the return of NFP I am struggling to think of one single player that has actually improved in that time, Wood, Marshall, Waghorn. Vardey, Drinkwater have all gone backwards, it's pretty damning. Similarly, as a team, we do not seem to be improving in anyway whatsoever, we are useless at corners at both ends of the pitch, panic when put under pressure and revert to the hoof far too easily. I guess it is possible that we start the season really well, after all that is exactly what happened last season and the players that took us top are all still here, nobody saw that coming, at least not in that style. I really hope and want that to happen but the memory of those '17 games' still haunts me and at present, I can only see more of the same.

Surely this team should not need time to gel as its the same as last season so no excuses there & should at least beat northampton as the last friendly before the start of the season ! As for set pieces at both ends we are awful & it make you wonder what they get up to in training apart from talking golf tactics !! In not a Pearson lover or hater but really think he will only get the 10 game start to the season & if we are not up there in the top six fear he will get sacked causing a season of turmoil for us ! I've renewed my season ticket this year but its the first time in 28 years of non stop going I've really thought should I bother this year hope I'm proved right & we have a great season but feel apprehensive to say the least !!
KFS Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 this one beats the lot let's blame radio leicester You can't tell me you believe anything that Alan Young says.
Dan Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Why on earth do you think that it is odd? Under NFP, the second time, we have always conceded from set pieces and generally been bobbins defensively when the ball is in our box. Our best period defensively came when we played aggressive attacking football, pressed the opposition and allowed Morgan to hold the line some 30-40 yards out, he was very good at that. Let the opposition come on to us and get the ball into the box and we are hopeless, the odd desperate block from Schmeichel aside. I'll probably get criticised for this but I wonder if a lot of it is down to Schmeichel. It'd be simplistic to put it all down to him, but he's certainly not a dominant keeper in his box. Excellent shot stopper but we've been a joke at defending set pieces ever since he's been in the side. Like I say, it's certainly not JUST his fault but I definitely think he's got some blame to take.

Dan Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 That's an unreal goal to be fair got no massive gripe with going long from a goal-kick or if it's the only option, but if we do it by choice when we have time and space then I despair.

Like I say, it's certainly not JUST his fault but I definitely think he's got some blame to take. Dominating the box defensively is down to the keeper and the 2 centerbacks. last season that was Schmeichel, Morgan plus one of SSL, Moore, Whitbread and mostly Keane. In reality, as I said above, our best defensive period came when we got forward and pressed the opposition, forcing them into the hurried pass or the big forward hoof. Holding the line 30-40 yards out Morgan was excellent, it didn't much matter who played alongside, commanding our box was irrelevant, the opposition hardly got into it. When we sit deep, invite the opposition on, we panic whenever the ball goes into the box, the senior players who should be sorting it out are Schmeichel and Morgan. You work it out......
ronnup Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 No professional football player is going to give 100% in a pre season friendly 4 days away from the league starting. And Nigel will have told them not to. Ever played football? Give 100% in an 11 a side game and there's a serious chance of getting hurt. Even a knock and your out for Saturday. Meaningless game.
Leicesterpool Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Wood's Goal vs Northampton - Route one, great touch from Waggy and a good finish! That settles it Waghorn and Wood up front on saturday!
Bert Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 That settles it Waghorn and Wood up front on saturday! No thanks. I can see us going 451.
Wymsey Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 No thanks. I can see us going 451. The problem with this formation is that it requires a team that passes the ball around well. Given the friendlies I've watched, our passes have been hit-and-miss.

I often used to say the same about Ian Walker, we conceded a lot more set pieces with him in goal than we did with Keller or Flowers despite having the same centre backs a lot of the time. Walker was a good keeper but very much stay at home when it came to balls being tossed in, Flowers and Kellers would clean up the whole penalty box in trying to clear a ball if they had too.

It makes sense to be honest. He very rarely retrieves it from a corner unless it really is a tosh delivery. Chris Weale on the other hand, I thought funnily enough this was his strongest attribute.

It does, I remember an England manager saying something similar about Robinson as well and how much pressure he put on the defenders.
Dan Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 It does, I remember an England manager saying something similar about Robinson as well and how much pressure he put on the defenders. I'm actually not massively convinced by our centre halves in the air either. I think Whitbread's the best in the air, Morgan is decent in the air but not amazing, St Ledger doesn't impress me in the air at all. I think it's no co-indicence personally. I think some of our excuses for defending from them has been shocking and would be laughed at in non-league.
GingerrrFox Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 No thanks. I can see us going 451. We spend all pre-season working on a 352 but forget that we are gonna play 451. Likely.
