Britain's biggest ever 'fatberg' has been removed from a London sewer.

Thames Water say a "bus-sized lump" of food fat mixed with wet wipes formed in drains under London Road in Kingston, Surrey.

The blockage was discovered after residents in nearby flats complained they couldn't flush their toilets.

Thames Water believe if it wasn't removed it could have led to sewage flooding homes, streets and businesses.

Gordon Hailwood, Waste Contracts supervisor for Thames Water said: "Given we've got the biggest sewers and this is the biggest 'fatberg' we've encountered, we reckon it has to be the biggest in British history.

"While we've removed greater volumes of fat from under central London in the past, we've never seen a single, congealed lump of lard this big clogging our sewers before."

He added: "The sewer was almost completely clogged with over 15 tonnes of fat. If we hadn't discovered it in time, raw sewage could have started spurting out of manholes across the whole of Kingston.

"It was so big it damaged the sewer and repairs will take up to six weeks."

CCTV investigations in London Road found the mound of fat had reduced the sewer to just five per cent of its normal capacity.

The question here should be, do people know you shouldn't pour fat and lard down the sink?

How many people after cooking bacon just pour the hot fat down the sink, or wash the frying pan with the fat still in it?

Me...and I know I'm not supposed to do it.

What else can you do with it though?

Wait for it to go hard, then scrape it into the bin, or save it to cook with.

Wait until it's set, scoop it out, put it in the bin.

Pour it into a jar and wait for it to congeal so you can wash the pan.

Let it set, scrape it into a sandwich for elevensies.

My cousin whilst at university said a guy in their house scrapped the oven out before they gave it a clean and put it in a sandwich!

Lard (if you still use the stuff) can be left to congeal as others have said. Oil, however, once it has become unsuitable for re-use at home, I drain collect in a large container and it can be taken to the tip and re-cycled. At least in this area.
