ScouseFox Posted 23 October 2013 Author Posted 23 October 2013 Does part of you not think that the "fame" got him the captains job for England? Not saying he wasn't a good captain (I thought he was) just that there were possibly better people that were overlooked, he's probably my all time favourite England player. Well if the fame got him to captain his country to 2 World Cups then choosing fame was definitely the correct decision. Basically trying to say I highly, highly doubt Becks has any regrets whatsoever for supposedly abandoning football for a life of fame (even though after leaving United for this sought after fame he played for Madrid, won their league, almost single handedly got most of America interested in football, captained England to a Euros and a World Cup, became our record caps holder, played for AC Milan & won Ligue 1 with PSG). He's had a fabulous football career that most pros would be jealous of, as well as being one of the biggest celebrities of the modern era (and one of the few celebs who I don't think I've ever met anyone who dislikes him). Ferguson just sounds a bit bitter, as he does with most the comments that have come from his book so far.
Head Honcho Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 The award for wind-up merchant of the year goes to.................Sir Alex Ferguson. Top stuff imo

I don't know where to start with this mate! 1. Very few in the USA give a shit about Football, they went mad for the World Cup in 94 (check the attendances) but the interest is actually waining. 2. He isn't. Shilton is. (Thank god as well, give me 108 of Bobby Moore's 90 mins ahead of a man who got 25 of them making 10 minute cameo appearances in friendlies etc) He wanted it as well. 3. I suppose that is strictly true, although me and you had about as much to do with PSG winning the league as him.

Guest MattP Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 Attendances have been going up in the MLS ,and tv audiences have increased too. Fair enough on the whole, very little difference though. Most teams average went down from 2012 to 2013, 11 out of the 19 clubs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer_attendance
ScouseFox Posted 23 October 2013 Author Posted 23 October 2013 I'm pretty sure he has got more Americans interested and also more non-Americans interested in the MLS (both players and fans). Record outfield caps holder, I think most know what I meant. Yeah he didn't do much to help PSG win Ligue 1 but again that is my point. He won another major world league from being famous rather than being at the top of his game. There's a reason when Scholes retired he wasn't begged to go to PSG for 6 months or AC on loan twice etc etc and that's because he's not the icon Beckham is. So again Beckham made the right choice between fame and football that Fergie is seemingly taking a dig at him for.
Mark_w Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 Beckham made the right choice between fame and football that Fergie is seemingly taking a dig at him for. Fame over long term success at the club you grew up supporting (and fame). I'm really not sure that was the right choice.

He did but do you think hr really looks on his Ligue 1 medal with any pride? It's like Paul Collingwood being given an MBE after scoring 0 and 8 in the Ashes, must surely mean nothing to him.
ScouseFox Posted 23 October 2013 Author Posted 23 October 2013 Fame over long term success at the club you grew up supporting (and fame). I'm really not sure that was the right choice. So I'll ask you who's life would you rather live? Beckham's or Scholes/Giggs? Football isn't everything... Scholes is just a normal guy who's good at football. Beckham is not quite as good at football but because he made the right choices he's got a life hardly anyone else in the world could even dream of having. That's my opinion anyhow. I'm sure there will be some on here who'd rather just play football for 15 years, win loads and disappear. I'd rather have what Becks has had and he got that by choosing what he chose. Write outfield then, much easier. He did but do you think hr really looks on his Ligue 1 medal with any pride? It's like Paul Collingwood being given an MBE after scoring 0 and 8 in the Ashes, must surely mean nothing to him. He probably does. He played a part, not a big goalscoring in big games and dragging his team across the line part, but a part nonetheless. Like I said originally, it's an interesting debate, but for someone who quite a few on here claimed was never actually a top top footballer in a thread not long back, he's won everything there is to win at club level, played for (arguably) England, France, Italy and Spain's biggest clubs, done a lot for American football, all whilst captaining his country to 2 World Cups and 1 European Championship. And that's just his life in football. He's got a whole different life of fame outside of football too, remember..

I mean Becks could get literally anyone he wanted. Posh is punching well above her weight. That being the case you'd think she'd be smiling non-stop but no.

ScouseFox Posted 23 October 2013 Author Posted 23 October 2013 Paul Scholes' life by a mile. Each to their own I guess.
Kitchandro Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 Paul Scholes' life by a mile. Replace Man Utd with Leicester City and I'd trade with Scholes over Becks, defo. That's just because I'd rather be an all time hero at my own club, spending my whole career there than play for a bunch of clubs for the fame and money.
marko Posted 23 October 2013 Posted 23 October 2013 Are you actually being serious with that comment? Gerrard's ball retention is appalling. The amount of ridiculous hollywood passes he tries that never come off for England always wind me up, particularly as no-one ever picks up on it or comments but when Lampard or Cleverley etc give it away it gets jumped on. Deadly. Supported by the fact that Gerrard has a superior pass completion percentage than Lampard. Whilst I agree they don't always come off when they do they invariable create a goal or excellent chance. Perhaps they get jumped on because it's the simple, basic passes the regularly hash up.
Ric Flair Posted 24 October 2013 Posted 24 October 2013 Ferguson is irked by Beckham because of how big he became and as a man with a huge ego himself he struggled to handle that. This muck that Beckham chose fame over his football isn't necessarily true it's just Ferguson needed David to give up what was there for him to take so that he could regain some power over him. Beckham is a media phenomenon, there's few players who have and ever will do what he has done and I think he's gone about things exactly how he should have done. He was blessed with a magnificent right foot and a superb work rate but he knew he had limitations himself in the modern game. Nobody could question Beckham's desire to want to play football, he's like Gazza in the fact he just loved playing. His dedication was admirable and the pride he got for captaining England was again for all to see, I shall never forget his one man crusade vs Greece. It was one of a few times i've been proud to be English in the last 10-15 years. Paul Scholes is the most gifted English player of his generation and only rivalled by Gazza in the last 25 years, he's an absolute credit to football in his behaviour but I think it's also held him back slightly. I actually think had Beckham had Scholes ability he'd have done more with it at national level. Scholes was good for England and was hampered with playing out of position under Sven but out of the two Beckham punched above his weight in his performances for England.
Haydos Posted 24 October 2013 Posted 24 October 2013 Rooney struggles with fitness? he's one of the fittest premier league players with a fat percentage below 4. He's everywhere in games. Trolling for me! 4% body fat? Do you know what that actually looks like?

Jimothy Posted 25 October 2013 Posted 25 October 2013 Compare trophy cabinets Trophies are won as part of a team, Scholes played for a better team. Comparing trophies might work when comparing tennis players, doesn't cut it as much with footballers. Djimi Traore has won the ****ing champions league for Christ sake! Does that mean he's a better left back than say Leighton Baines?
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 25 October 2013 Posted 25 October 2013 Compare trophy cabinets Why? We are comparing Gerrard and Scholes, not Liverpool and Manchester United.

Does that mean he's a better left back than say Leighton Baines? Yeah that's exactly what I've said. Better players play for better teams. Gerrard has been the standout player for Liverpool for years, because he's been the best. Scholes was surrounded by players as good, in a team where the limelight will have been spread. When was the last time Gerrard played in the same team as a team that contained the like of, Evra, Vidic, Giggs, Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney? Gerrard had Xabi Alonso, Hyypia and Torres for company, and much recently Suarez. I've probably forgot a Liverpool player so please let me know any others that'd be in that category of top class players. I'd take Zidane, Xavi Et Al's opinion over yours anyway, they would all tell you who they thought was better. And they'll have played against them.
Ashley Posted 25 October 2013 Posted 25 October 2013 Interviewer to Zidane "How does it feel to be the best midfielder in the world?" Zidane "I don't know, ask Paul Scholes".
