Would any current players have got in MON sides?

Much as I loved Parker at the time, King, DD and James would all be sniffing at his heels as a long term replacement.

Nugent is better than some of the strikers we had at the time, although not the likes of Heskey, Cottee or Claridge.  I think we forget how little time Collymore was actually at the club and how few games he played.

Knockaert looks a similar prospect to Izzet to me and could have pushed him for his place.

None of our current squad would have gotten into MON's first team.

Into the squad? Maybe Morgan and Knocky.

That's it.

I hate to be Mr Contraire in this thread but again, I doubt it. Gary Parker was one of the finest ball players I've ever seen at Leicester and Savage was an irreplaceable part of a team that won the League Cup and finished 8th in the Premiership.

This...

Parker was head and shoulders above any of our current midfielders. What our squad now could do with a Garry Parker.

Not one of our current squad would be first 11 in the o'neil days.

Kasper would be a better back up than Peggy, Morgan might sit on the bench and one of our midfielders could take Steffen Oaks place on the bench other than that not a chance.

Flowers/Keller

Walsh

Elliott

Taggart

Guppy

Lennon

Parker

Izzett

Savage

Heskey

Cottee

Far better than anything we've got now.

Starting line ups? A couple might have, but not in many league games.

Some of the players are young so we'll see in a few years, but right now I can't think of anyone who would get in ahead of our regulars in the late 90s.

Maybe before we signed Elliott or Taggart one of our centre backs could have. After all, Watts and Carey were wank.

In direct response to the OP I'd ask who you'd drop for those two. I can understand why you might say Knockaert but Izzet was a better version than he currently is, Konchesky makes no sense at all, he's not even one of our better players now. He wouldn't fit in to O'Neill's 3-5-2 nor would he have got in ahead of Whitlow in the earlier seasons.

King, Drinkwater and James have a long way to go to be considered of that standard. We haven't seen enough of James yet and thus far Drinky and King have divided opinion at this level.

We may not have had prolific strikers under O'Neill but we don't now either. Vardy will never score at that level, Nugent's never quite made the step up and Wood is a maybe as he gets older, but not now.

My earliest memories as a City fan are of the end of that O'Neil era.

That team we had was immense, to a man much better than what we have now.

Wasyl < Elliot

Morgan < Walsh

Knockaert < Izzet

Wood < Heskey

Nugent < Cottee

Drinkwater < Savage

James < Lennon

Maybe Impey or Sinclair could be replaced, but that's about it.

Sav was a ****ing shite footballer. He only fit in MON's teams because MON made him run like an absolute dog and didn't let him play football. As soon as Sav moved clubs and got it into his head he could play football his level was exposed. Personally think Drinkwater would get in ahead of Parker in the midfield, if Drinkwater continues his upward scale (he's got even better and more influential than last season) he could easily make it at Mid table/Europa League level.

Drinkwater's only shown any kind of consistency for the last 6 weeks or so. He was very hit and miss last season. Of course if he continues an upward scale he could play in a Europa League side but it's a big if.

You can't start comparing him to Parker yet.

Until the entire team went on the downturn last season. Drinkwater was on fire and was the reason we played some of the best football a Leicester City side have played in the past decade. Drinkwater plays well we win.

Wow. Don't get me wrong, having Knocky in the team is great, and he often raises the team in a way noone else currently can. But Izzet is comfortably the best player we've had since I started watching in 1991, and the only convincing argument I've heard for anyone else is for Lennon.

As others have said, De Laet would very likely have slotted in, and he's suited to 352, but I really don't see anyone else being good enough for the first team. Nuge 18 months ago might have been a sub, Wes maybe ahead of Prior in the promotion side, but MON's spine was so strong it would really have to be something special to fit in there.

It's a  shame he didn't play well for half of last season then!

Don't get me wrong, at the moment he looks a good player, but he's done bugger all compared to the likes of Parker, Izzet and Lennon.

I can't believe we're even discussing this tbh, when we finish in the top half of the Prem I'll consider the question again.

he wasnt technically gifted but he definitely wasnt a "****ing shite footballer."

I dont understand how you can say that.

He left the club and was a regular for premier league sides.

Matt Elliot, Walsh and Taggart were all far far far better than Wes and Was and probably Moore(he could improve). Wes is class at this level but the prem would be too fast for him, Elliot was 10 times better. Him & Taggart proved how comfertable they dealt with this league in 02-03 and that was when they were way past their best.

Comparing Izzet or Lennon to any of our current 3 is like comparing Christiano Ronaldo to Tom Ince or a Ferrari to a Ford Focus. Izzet was a top class Premiership footballer. He could get into a top 10 team easily. Lennon was IMO even better. 1 of the type of players who made things tick and broke up play. For me in his prime now he could get into a Spurs, Everton, Liverpool team easily(far better than players like Lucas).

To compare them to average Drinky or James & King(who I both rate as good for the CCC) is baffling.

Look what happened when Lennon left for Celtic..many blame Peter taylor, maybe blame Wycombe but I have my reasons why we had a good start still despite losing Martin, Emile & Collymore, yet when Neil left in Jan what happened afterwards(similar to what happened to Liverpool when Alonso left).

Finally strikers..were talking about the Nugent who has scored a ratio of about 5 open play goals since Jan? Comparing him to a 10 goal premier league strikers Heskey, Cottee etc is again a joke.

The only players who I think potentially could get into the team are Knocky, Dyer, Moore(if he improved), Vardy(unlikely but hes untryed and you never know), Kasper & possibly James.

King is at his peak and he isnt quite to that standard despite IMO a capable Premiership midfielder(possibly low end). Drinky wont be good enough, Nugent past his best and not quite good enough.

Just my opinions of course. At the end of the day you never know, I mean who would of thought Gareth McCuarley would be a 'solid top 10 CB' after playing with us. Hes been class for a West Brom team who probably if anything are the closely resembled clone to our 90s teams - I.E genuinly solid team, never getting relegated..capable of beating anyone(Winning at Old Trafford and drawing 2-2 at Stamford Bridge).

Fantastic post that. I couldn't agree more....

lol lol lol, drinkwater is nowhere near the level parker was, not even close.

MON made one or two bad buys, Impey, Fenton etc. but they would have been in a Pearson squad. Fenton was better than waggy! But it's a mark of how far we've fallen when comparisons are made between Wasyl and Wes with Taggart Walsh and Elliott.

Take our best current midfielder and try and match to the likes of Muzzy, Lennon, Parker, nowhere near in my opinion, Scott Taylor is more on par.

Absolutely. I still maintain that Parker was one of the most gifted ball players I've ever seen at Filbo, home or away side, better even than Gary Mac. If in doubt watch that ball he plays to Grayson in the 97 semi final, or the ball onto Walsh's head in the final. Or his ball in the last minute of the playoff final, or any of his penalties. We certainly haven't had anybody since that could take set pieces like that.

I missed gary macs era really, the closest i ever seen to parker was steve thompson (in pure passing range) but parker was still streets ahead.

One of my favourite ever city players, the way some seem to think of him a lesser player than izzet or lennon is quite laughable. I would imagine izzet owes a bit of his career development to garry.

Impey a bad buy?! Really?

This is a ridiculous topic. If you look at the team we had just before Heskey left, we were only 2/3 players away from having a team capable of challenging right at the top of that league. Yes, a lot of the players we have now have the potential to get to that level but realistically, they probably won't.

Enjoy the team we have now but wait until we achieve things before waxing lyrical about the current crop.
