Saxondale Posted 3 December 2013 Posted 3 December 2013 My dad was an engineer's fitter, originally on hosiery machinery. As the skilled work disappeared (ie. the Chinese bought machines, learned to how copy them and flog them back to us), his jobs gradually dumbed-down until he was eventually doing unskilled manual in the years up to retirement. My mum is a legal cashier. I do neither of these things.

He was then Director of Transport for Cambs County Council until he retired at bloody 50! My mum didn't really do much, but for a time organised courses for growers in our area who supplied the supermarkets.Where new staff had to do Fork lift/ health and safety/ first aid courses she just booked these up for the employee. Zingari Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Both my mum and dad worked. I work too. I consider it the way forwards although many would disagree. Bravo , but finding and keeping jobs today is not so easy as in the past. When I was working, Leicester was a hive of activity but look at all the empty , derelict and demolished factories in and around Leicester now. Hosiery , shoes , light engineering etc etc factories that dominated every road and street have all but disappeared . I'm glad I'm not looking for work now as I'm sure i'd find it very difficult to get a job because i'm witnessing friends and family desperately searching ( and mostly failing) to find work.
