Romania immigrant's

I don't get it.

You are supposed to support open borders in the EU because a musician you like did who died before the whole thing was created? Strange.

Considering the EU immigration policy seems to be designed to keep the rich richer and the poor poorer I'd have grave doubts Lennon would be a fan in this day and age.

On the subject I think Father Ted has nailed it, you only have to speak to anyone who has dealt with Romanians on a regular basis and the opinion isn't generally great.

Unfair to bring Poles etc into this argument, completely different people.

So you have to agree with every opinion of a musician that you like? Good one.

Bruce Dickinson is a massive Tory, Eurosceptic tit as I learned from his Hardtalk interview. Just so long as he doesn't write songs about it.

I hope someday you'll join us/And the world will live as one

"Tory, eurosceptic tit"

What's the opposite to that? lol

Yeah man. John Lennon was a massive advocate of closed borders etc.

This  :xmaslaugh:

The irony of having Lennon as your idol and then saying how damaging foreigners are to society is too great not to be picked up on.

Stop lying to yourself mate, your views differ from that man's very significantly.

lol ... What the?

John Lennon is a hero of mine because of his music, I don't really care about what he did outside of music that much. I didn't even agree with some of the stuff he did anyway but that doesn't take away his music.

Do I have to support everything he did now then? I suppose this is a good time to start taking LSD.

Oh ok then. I'd say his popularity mostly comes from what he thought and said which is why I made that assumption about you.

People just aren't saying what I think they're saying tonight.

.

Nothing to do with him being one of the greatest musicians of all time then.

His combining of music and political message is why many see him as their hero. People wouldn't cherish him in the same way if he didn't try to 'spread the love' in his songs.

The other members of the Beatles don't have the same appeal because they're 'just' musicians.

I don't think there's anything I find more irritating on here than people criticising what I say with a " lol " smiley.

Although the feigning of superiority as a substitute for rational discussion does make me wonder if what I said was just too powerful an argument for them to respond to.

It really isn't it is? Look at a lot of Paul McCartneys stuff, far more left and hippy than Lennon and must people now think he's a willy puller.

Lennon is so popular because of his music and his death, nothing can elevate a person to god like status than a young underserved unnatural death, see Kurt Cobain and many others in the 28 club.

People idolise Lennon because he was a musical genius taken far to early, not because he was a bit kooky, married a weirdo, had "cool" political views and stunk.

I honestly had no idea McCartney was left wing. Maybe I should steer clear of this stuff seeing as how little I know about it!

I have been to Romania many times (10) since the revolution there. My experience is that the country is a dump, inhabited by the mafia and other undesirables. Would I want to allow unrestricted access for them to the UK? Absolutely not. They steal pretty much anything. Vote UKIP!

I agree. I absolutely hate that.

Yeah I know!  :xmaslaugh:  It's quite bad of me tbh   I know not everyone has had the same opportunities as me but yeah, find it difficult to get on with people who hold certain views due to ignorance of the subject.

I have a John Lennon keyring which I wear around my neck. I liked his music and what he stood for. He still felt the same about causes after gaining stardom. Paul Mc Cartney on the other hand embraces the millionaire lifestyle. Nothing wrong with that of course. He  deserves what he has for being part of one of the best bands ever.

Imagine is one of my favourite all time songs.

Oh course John Lennon is revered for his political views beyond his music and his early death. That's was one of the reasons posters with quotes from imagine grace the walls of student common rooms, not because they're "catchy lyrics" but because of his principles of peace. Had McCartney been taken from us early, I don't think we'd see similar posters with quotes from The Frog Song.

Yeah no one remembers him for things like this:

Lennon-and-Ono-Bed-In-002.jpg

or go to the effort to make films about his views on songwriting....

You're a middle class toff, who doesn't live in areas affected by immigrants. I bet you never come across a immigrant in your life.

I came across an immigrant once, cost me £50 and she made me wash my old man in the sink first, but it was totally worth it.

I really don't care, this is madness. I feel sorry for british families struggling to pay the bills. Why invite loads of unskilled people and people who won't bring nothing to the country apart from leech of of benefits.

Yeah, we've got enough of those amongst our indiginous white population, the workshy freeloaders.

The association of xenophobia with immigration controls is wrong.

True, but often the desire for greater immigration control stems from xenophobia. Reading a lot of the stuff on here, "white neighbourhoods are nice", "all Eastern Europeans are racist", "leech of benfits", "there are some normal people in Romania then there are Roma", "Romanians steal almost anything" it doesn't seem like people are debating immigration so much as denegrating a whole group of people. Then the rediculous comment from Lamby about opening shops. Do people worry about the effects of immigration on local people or do they dislike foreigners?
