cityfanlee23 Posted 20 January 2014 Author Posted 20 January 2014 If they let me manage them and pick the squad we could win it easy. As it is we'll take Cleverly, Smalling, Young etc and we will be alright but then lose. What would your starting 11 be and what formation??
cityfanlee23 Posted 20 January 2014 Author Posted 20 January 2014 Who have they got at centre back? If they play that big donkey Coates then it should be a decent chance for us to get at them! Certainly a different type of game to Italy. That will be cagey and tight and we will struggle to break them down. It is Rooneys time this world cup..hes 27/28? next world cup he'll be past it so he should want to go all out for it. Stevie G is also at the end of his England career so he will want a last hooray..as well as all the young legs, who knows whats possible? We arnt the most talented squad by a long way but nor were Chelsea in 2011, Liverpool in 2005, Porto in 2004, Greece in 2004 etc. We have to believe we can or we wont..simple as that! I did not create this thread for people like you to come along and be Optimistic and happy!! STOP IT Good points though, Oh england we love you
indierich06 Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Absolutely not. When you look at our squad, then look at top international teams, there's just no comparison. Our only decent players are Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere, and even they're not world class. We've got no decent strikers outside of Rooney, no decent midfielders outside of Wilshere and no decent defenders - full stop. I'll be surprised if we make it out of our group.
MC Prussian Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 I think with uraguay Rooney is important, Because defence is definitely their weak link! Could say they same about us though Uruguay's defense may not be the best, but it's certainly not bad. Apart from Lugano and Scotti (bless him), all of their defenders are in their prime and some still to peak. All in all, they have a very balanced squad coupled with a poised attacking force in particular. If they have one weakness, it's their goalkeeper. Muslera has been dodgy occasionally and his recent replacements (Castillo, Silva) don't have the international experience needed for such a tournament.
deanolegend1989 Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 gotta be positive, I dont think we have a chance really but who knows, gotta dream right!? Id pick: Hart Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines Gerrard Wiltshire Milner Rooney Townsend Sturridge What do you think?
MC Prussian Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 As for England's chances, they'll be lucky to get past the group stages. For that, it'd take a huge slip-up by Italy or a minor slip-up by Uruguay to allow England to enjoy a couple more days after the initial phase. With the current line-up, which I'd consider one of the weakest in ages, I can't see them getting very far. Rooney is more often injured than he should be, the midfield hasn't aged very well and apart from Lampard and Gerrard, who can take command in the middle of the park? Maybe Wilshere can show glimpses of genius. The lack of good wingers is another issue (as shown by Uncle A's thread). And in terms of centre-backs, probably the same. Joe Hart is prone to costly errors at times and doesn't ooze this sense of security often needed for big tournaments. England would have to play its heart out and show up as a unit rather than a collection of more or less talented individuals to pass the WC 2014 group stage test.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 The only plus is with England almost always going out on penalties - Rickie Lambert featuring means you're guaranteed one in this scenario. That's if we make it out of the group stage, which is unlikely. Lucky for me I'm not too fussed about England, I just enjoy watching any matches and love it when underdogs do alright
JamesLCFC Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 What about starting team against Italy assuming no injuries? Hart, Walker, Cahill, Jagielka, Cole, Gerrard, Wilshere, Walcott (if back from injury by then, if not Townsend), Rooney, Barkley, Sturridge
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Of course we do. We are one of the strongest teams in the world. Tell me did Wigan Athletic really have a chance of winning the FA Cup? Did Swansea City really have a chance of winning the League Cup? Did Bradford City really have a chance of getting to the League Cup final?
Durnerz Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 The only Silverware we're likely to get at the World cup will be stolen off the hotel breakfast table.
J.Lisemore Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Absolutely no chance with the batch of players we have at the moment, I'm pleased to see Roy Hodgson in charge, but he just hasn't got the players at his disposal. No matter how much the National media big our players up, we haven't got 'world class players'.
RonnieTodger Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 too much of a lack of world class players, and too many average ones. This. I don't even think we have a good squad on paper anymore.
richardsfoxes Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 My mind says no, my heart says yes. Although i do think we will do better than expected, simply because the pressure is off and no one is expecting anything.
Mack Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 There has never in my lifetime (40+ years) been a time when England have a worse chance in a World Cup than this year. I would be surprised if we got out of the group to be honest, Italy and Uruguay are better teams than us and should take the top two spots.
lavrentis Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Will finish third in your group. and then you woke up
Bert Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 and then you woke upIt's actually quite realistic?
lavrentis Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 It's actually quite realistic? 2nd yeah, not 3rd
Dan Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Simply no chance. We won't disgrace ourselves but we won't do anything special. If we get to the quarters I think we've done very well.
Raj Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Will be lucky to get out the group. But it ll be interesting to see how the players react with little pressure on them this time as fans and pundits aren't talking them up
Dan Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Of course we do. We are one of the strongest teams in the world. Tell me did Wigan Athletic really have a chance of winning the FA Cup? Did Swanseaa City really have a chance of winning the League Cup? Did Bradford City really have a chance of getting to the League Cup final? The difference is a lot of sides in that, top sides included, weren't prioritising those tournaments. The World Cup is the one. Not a single side will hold back here. We simply aren't close to one of the best teams. We're an average side in this World Cup and the sooner people stop deluding themselves otherwise the better.
Dan Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 2nd yeah, not 3rd Ahead of? I'd make us third favourites in this group especially on South American soil. Write Uruguay/Italy off at your peril.
lavrentis Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Ahead of? I'd make us third favourites in this group especially on South American soil. Write Uruguay/Italy off at your peril. Just a personal opinion, I think even in the conditions we can beat Uruguay.
Dan Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 Just a personal opinion, I think even in the conditions we can beat Uruguay. Not one bit convinced. Our defence has gone completely downhill and we only have to meet an on-form Suarez to seal our fate. We're complete underdogs in that one for me, as well as the Italy game. I fancy Uruguay for the group.
Corky Posted 20 January 2014 Posted 20 January 2014 No. It'll be tough even for the best European nations over there, with the climate and possible travelling. I do like Hodgson and don't think anyone English could do a significantly better job, the talent available is not up to the standard required of a tournament winner. We should try and enjoy it while we are there and play without fear.
