Im having an MRI scan in about a month for my troublesome ankles and I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever had one and what its like. Im a little apprehensive about going into one of them tunnels, not saying that I won't do it, but I just wanted to know what people's thoughts are that have had one before?

As it's not a full body scan, most probably your ankle will be the only thing in the tube and your body will be outside.

It's is a bit daunting if you're not a fan of small spaces, but it's not too bad once you've been in a minute or so. You're never enclosed and could get out if you wanted. I almost fell asleep actually.

As Cambridge says, you won't be having your head in the tunnel so I shouldn't worry about it.

I'm am very claustrophobic so I have to insist on the new bigger, more open machines, which are now available. I guess with the NHS you don't have a choice. I've been in the small ones and I hated it.

I had a full body one. Can't say that I enjoyed it - it felt very confined - but I was given some sort of a panic button/intercom (can't recall precisely).

I adopted the same approach that I do when having treatment at the dentists: take an active decision to passively hand control of myself to the experts, on the assumption that they know what they're doing, actively deciding not to worry about what's being done to me, while paying attention and following instructions....makes it all a lot calmer in my experience.

I had one of my entire spine, hated it to be honest. Was incredibly loud, crapped, and hot. You should be okay though, they'll probably just scan up to your knee.

That must have made it a deeply unpleasant experience in such a confined space!

I've had two. Having a third on my lower back on 6.4.14.

Don't worry.. the staff are great and talk you thru the whole procedure.

The biggest issue for me is the noise. But you wear earphones so its drowned-out some.

As someone said, I dunno if you'd have to enter the cylinder if its only an ankle?

I like how  they tell you it's all  perfectly safe , but just before the buzzing starts , they all fook off out the room and hide behind 6 inches of lead shielding !!

I was given earphones and they had a radio station playing during mine.

It was a live discussion about the increased cancer rates for males.

Which was nice and helped me take my mind off things.

Yeah I've had one it's not all that bad. The machine is really loud though. As others have said it is probably only your ankles that will go in the tunnel and the rest of you will be outside of it.

You just have to keep still like in an xray, usually they give you music to listen to while the thing makes it's 'war of the worlds' noise.

It's really nothing to be concerned about. It's not painful, nor uncomfortable, it's not even a confined space... It's just a little noisy...   I don't know why people get so worried about it, there are far worse procedures.

Ive had at least six btw

I told them not to bother with headphones as they said the music wasn't working. Wasn't that loud to be honest...just a lot of knocking noises.

Not as loud as, I don't know, a busy road even. I think peoples imagination gets the better of them sometimes....
