chrishlcfc Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Im having an MRI scan in about a month for my troublesome ankles and I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever had one and what its like. Im a little apprehensive about going into one of them tunnels, not saying that I won't do it, but I just wanted to know what people's thoughts are that have had one before?

Leeds Fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 It's is a bit daunting if you're not a fan of small spaces, but it's not too bad once you've been in a minute or so. You're never enclosed and could get out if you wanted. I almost fell asleep actually.
Guesty Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Never been in one myself, but someone told me it's weird and the noise and confined space takes a while to get used to.

As Cambridge says, you won't be having your head in the tunnel so I shouldn't worry about it. I'm am very claustrophobic so I have to insist on the new bigger, more open machines, which are now available. I guess with the NHS you don't have a choice. I've been in the small ones and I hated it.
Itsthejoeker Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I had one of my entire spine, hated it to be honest. Was incredibly loud, crapped, and hot. You should be okay though, they'll probably just scan up to your knee.
chrishlcfc Posted 16 March 2014 Author Posted 16 March 2014 Ok thanks for the info all, probably won't be going fully inside it then by the looks of things.
Bryn Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 It's unpleasant but they're very safe. Not even any radiation.
Alf Bentley Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I had a full body one. Can't say that I enjoyed it - it felt very confined - but I was given some sort of a panic button/intercom (can't recall precisely). I adopted the same approach that I do when having treatment at the dentists: take an active decision to passively hand control of myself to the experts, on the assumption that they know what they're doing, actively deciding not to worry about what's being done to me, while paying attention and following instructions....makes it all a lot calmer in my experience. I had one of my entire spine, hated it to be honest. Was incredibly loud, crapped, and hot. You should be okay though, they'll probably just scan up to your knee. That must have made it a deeply unpleasant experience in such a confined space!

Having a third on my lower back on 6.4.14. Don't worry.. the staff are great and talk you thru the whole procedure. The biggest issue for me is the noise. But you wear earphones so its drowned-out some. As someone said, I dunno if you'd have to enter the cylinder if its only an ankle?
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Like others have said it's fine buddy. It's not as bad as you think
Zingari Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I like how they tell you it's all perfectly safe , but just before the buzzing starts , they all fook off out the room and hide behind 6 inches of lead shielding !!
Rincewind Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Trust Zing to put peoples minds at rest with the thinking out the box theory.
pSinatra Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 It's a giant magnet.........so don't forget to remove your Prince Albert

Nick Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 I was given earphones and they had a radio station playing during mine. It was a live discussion about the increased cancer rates for males. Which was nice and helped me take my mind off things.
Monk Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Yeah I've had one it's not all that bad. The machine is really loud though. As others have said it is probably only your ankles that will go in the tunnel and the rest of you will be outside of it. You just have to keep still like in an xray, usually they give you music to listen to while the thing makes it's 'war of the worlds' noise.
johnny the fox Posted 16 March 2014 Posted 16 March 2014 Its like going down on a bird from Nottingham..take a torch.

ozleicester Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 no big deal...Nothing to worry about............. you didnt need testicles did you?
jgtuk Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 It's really nothing to be concerned about. It's not painful, nor uncomfortable, it's not even a confined space... It's just a little noisy... I don't know why people get so worried about it, there are far worse procedures. Ive had at least six btw

OzFox Posted 18 March 2014 Posted 18 March 2014 ok im not actually massively worried, I was just wondering what its like and from what people hae said its just going to be pretty loud. I told them not to bother with headphones as they said the music wasn't working. Wasn't that loud to be honest...just a lot of knocking noises.
jgtuk Posted 18 March 2014 Posted 18 March 2014 ok im not actually massively worried, I was just wondering what its like and from what people hae said its just going to be pretty loud. Not as loud as, I don't know, a busy road even. I think peoples imagination gets the better of them sometimes....
