Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 What a wank free kick, and what a wank game of football.
Nalis Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 Shaqiri is everything in a footballer I dislike. Dives like crazy, gives the 'tough little big man' to the referee when he got in his way either. Glad the little shit lost.
lcfcsnow Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 What didn't Shaqiri drill it on the ground? There was no chance of getting it up and down that close to the box and a wall that big.
StanSP Posted 1 July 2014 Author Posted 1 July 2014 Why did the referee not spray the line in front of the wall before that last free-kick?
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 That tops Iran-Nigeria as the tourny's worst game when you think about it relative to the talent on show. Terrible.
Beliall Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 Why did the referee not spray the line in front of the wall before that last free-kick? He did. The Argies stood on it.
StanSP Posted 1 July 2014 Author Posted 1 July 2014 He did. The Argies stood on it. Therefore, why did he not enforce them to stand behind it?!
MC Prussian Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 Nevermind, Switzerland can hold their head up high after this slightly bitter defeat. We gave Argentina a good fight and were so close to a penalty shootout, but one lost ball two minutes from the end is all that Messi needs to pass to Di Maria and... I'm not disappointed, we gave it our best shot against one of the favourites and contained them pretty well, yet in the second half, fatigue set in. Well done, still. Made the country proud and I'm sure some of our players, Benaglio in particular, will be more sought-after following tonight's epic battle.
separator Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 One good thing to come out of this game... Eastenders has been cancelled for today
Kitchandro Posted 1 July 2014 Posted 1 July 2014 Delighted with that result, Switzerland consistently offer nothing at world cups and are always at the centre of total borefests (Anyone remember v Ukraine in 2006, France in the same tournament, 0-0 against Honduras 4 years ago, etc?) and today they were the same. It would have been awful for Messi to be stifled out of the whole tournament, sure they'll say it gave them the best chance of winning, but they're not going to win any friends doing that. Argentina may be very average but they've got probably the most exciting player ever, and possibly the only person who can make this world cup truly memorable for something specific.

That's very, very harsh, Kitch. And also a bit ignorant to a certain extent. Nothing beats general statements, eh?Four years ago, we beat Spain 1-0. I agree, there was a certain element of luck involved, but we prevailed and shocked the footballing world. I do agree with the notion that very often, our system of play consists of a too timid approach. I'm not the biggest advocate of Hitzfeld with his lone striker formation, yet we've won more games than we've lost with him. But he's retired from coaching the Swiss national football team now, so there's hope that Petkovic, his successor, will come up with a more free-flowing and attractive kind of football. Then again, we have limited resources and for a country like Switzerland, you can't always offer entertaining, attacking play. We just don't have the depth in player material available to toy around - I've been banging on about our lack of decent strikers for a while now. There are many reasons why the audience can't expect us to score two, three goals on a regular basis (which country does that, by the way?). The loss against France this year may have been one of the more humiliating ones, but it was an entertaining game where, even at 5-0 down, the team managed to change into a higher gear and maintain its composure towards the end and score twice. We did beat Ecuador and Honduras this year, so we do offer something at World Cups. Compared to the expectations surrounding the England team every two to four years, we're doing rather well for such a small nation with several different national languages, cultures and attitudes, fielding a unique national squad with so many players with a different ethnic background on a regular basis. Also, there have been other truly great individuals or nations at this year's World Cup who've brought joy to the football fans: James Rodriguez, Tim Cahill, Shaqiri (his first goal against Honduras was a cracker), Chile, Costa Rica or Algeria to name a few. So, it's not just all about Messi - there are other geniuses out there, too.
Super_horns Posted 2 July 2014 Posted 2 July 2014 Argentina might enjoy playing Belgium more who will be more open and leave Messi more space to work in.. Mind you the Swiss had good chances of their own.
