Jimothy Posted 9 July 2014 Posted 9 July 2014 So the Dutch play for penalties from minute one, then don't bring Krul on and let a shite defender who plays for Aston Villa take their first penalty. Louis Van Gaal - tactical genius Shite defender who was one of the best players on the pitch tonight. Just cos he plays for Villa eh? Wouldn't have sent him up to take the first penalty, but he's certainly not shite, not tonight at least.
Kitchandro Posted 9 July 2014 Posted 9 July 2014 I reiterate, it sums up the quality of the teams in this world cup that Argentina have made it to the final. Both of tonight's teams are extremely average. But apparently Alegeri beating South Korea 4-2 in the group makes this a classic world cup. And it sums up ITV that Chiles has actually just said 'these are two great teams who would both give Germany a good game so it was bound to be tight'. Adrian, it was tight because both teams are poor and negative. A couple of good, or even great individuals don't make a good team. For all BBC's failings at least they'd admit tonight was a bunch of shite.
Guest Col city fan Posted 9 July 2014 Posted 9 July 2014 Van Gaal master tactician.. Penalties are such a complex phenomenon etc etc etc.. Meh.. Why on earth did Ron Vlaar take their first one? The best team went through IMO. Germany for the final.

Grandad. Posted 9 July 2014 Posted 9 July 2014 That block tackle from Mascherano at the end of 90 minutes to deny Robben was a defenders dream, absolutely fantastic performance from the little man. You can't have a moan at any player who steps up and takes a penalty in my eyes, I always bottled them but then again the pressure in a Cup game aged 14 is a lot less than a World Cup Semi-Final. Vlaar was fantastic all evening but the majority will remember him for his terrible penalty. C'mon the Germans!
Guest MattP Posted 9 July 2014 Posted 9 July 2014 A cliché but that tackle Grandad mentions was as good as a world class goal.
kingcarr21 Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Why the fvck did Holland send up a centre half to take their first penalty? Put your best taker first and put the pressure on the other team. I think they tried being a bit clever and it's backfired due to the fact Huntelaar didn't even get to take one. So the Dutch play for penalties from minute one, then don't bring Krul on and let a shite defender who plays for Aston Villa take their first penalty. Louis Van Gaal - tactical genius Van Persie would of been the first taker if he was still on the pitch. Just read that no1 wanted to take the first penalty and Van Gaal chose Vlarr cause he was the best player in the match for holland. A stat i just read was that Messi never touched the ball in the penalty area in the whole 120 minutes. (sorry if already mentioned)
C-man Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Holland the worst semi-finalists since Turkey/S. Korea for me. With the exception of Robben they've been slowly getting worse throughout the tournament and have been the pits in the knockout rounds.
Grandad. Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Holland the worst semi-finalists since Turkey/S. Korea for me. With the exception of Robben they've been slowly getting worse throughout the tournament and have been the pits in the knockout rounds. Spot on - Mexico gave them a massive scare, two goals in the last three minutes got them through and the winning goal in that was a dubious penalty. Since that second round game they have failed to score a goal, with players like Van Persie, Robben, Snjieder and Huntelaar. That 5-1 opening win was amazing, a really special World Cup moment and it gave us all a massive misconception about the Dutch side. Fair play though, runners up and potential 3rd place in the last two World Cups is a good achievement for the nearly men of football. Man United have got themselves a right football genius.
Alf Bentley Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Am I the only one perverse enough to have found it a fascinating match? OK, it would have been good to have seen flair leading to goals, but there was some flair on display - it's just that the defending by both teams was at such a high level that the defences won out against the attacks. The level of concentration, organisation, team and individual discipline and sheer good defending was extraordinarily high and consistent. The polar opposite of Brazil's defending the night before. I wouldn't like to predict the outcome of the final, but would be confident that Argentina will give the Germans a game.Their defence will be infinitely better than Brazil's was and they have pace and flair in attack. Indeed, the Germans' more open, attacking style should suit them a lot better than the disciplined, defensive Dutch. Although the Germans are certainly a great creative force moving forward, they'll be up against a tougher defence than they've faced so far....and I'm not sure their own defence is infallible - witness Brazil having several clear chances early in the second half of the first semi...
Stadt Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Messi will get in behind their high line, I wouldn't be surprised if Mertesacker was dropped and Germany are little but deeper and they try and hit the Argies on the counter.

If Silva hadn't have tried to dink Cillesson at 1-0 I'm sure that Spain would've won convincingly. I was there that night and in Porto Alegre when they played poorly against the Aussies. Class from Robben and RVP getting them out of jail.
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 What!!!! Vlaar was immense tonight? Are you drunk? Among the drivel he's spouting as usual he's correct there, Vlaar had a great game last night.

Yeah the defenses looked good yesterday, but that was mainly due to the painfully lethargic pace of the game. The Dutch insisting on going through the middle and punting aimless balls forward and Argentina sitting back with 7-8 men at all times and really lacking ideas when they finally broke away. Argies slightly better than against Belgium, Netherlands slightly worse than against Costa Rica. Entertainment wise this was down there with Greece-South Korea and it would be absolutely tragic if the Argies won having played the way they have so far.
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Painful game to watch, anyone who thinks it was a masterclass in defending is reading too much into it I'm afraid, a few defenders had good games but there was nothing memorable.
Haydos Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Come on Kitch, cheer up you dour fvck. Mascherano's tackle...
Beliall Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Come on Kitch, cheer up you dour fvck. Mascherano's tackle... amazing tackle
Grandad. Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Come on Kitch, cheer up you dour fvck. Mascherano's tackle... That tackle gets better each time I watch it. Love little Masch, left under a dark cloud at Anfield but his post match interview when he won the Champions League with Barcelona was brilliant.
AKCJ Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Call me a cynic but Mascherano shouldn't have been given the chance to make that tackle. For me it's more shite attacking than good defending, although it was still a good tackle. As for the game, I didn't find it boring. I dunno if my brain's wired differently, but i'd rather watch two sides defend properly than Brazil's shambles last night. Probably because I am a centre half I agreed with Hansen's view of it being a severe low point of supposed top class football, you don't see defending like that on a Sunday League pitch.
Super_horns Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Missed this game due to work - I guess work was probably more exciting!
Guest Col city fan Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 Fascinating today how such little has been made of Holland, this time crashing out on penalties. After the Costa Rica game, the forum (and the media) were full of praise for Van Gaal's ingenuity. A tactical master-class, no less. Today, no counter argument? Little mention of Holland's supposedly expert penalty takers, this time, misfiring. Little questioning on why Ron Vlaar took the first penalty? No mention of why Van Gaal didnt do the same thing this time with Krul. Penalties are not a lottery, people cried..they are tactical and full of psychology. Interesting how this time, the Dutch then can get it so wrong? I wonder whether the Man Utd fans who, following Costa Rica, were wetting themselves at the joy of Van Gaal's tactical prowess, have now reflected a little on that? I wonder? Discuss...

Surely if Van Gaal was praised for drawing with Costa rica those people must feel the same way after Holland drew with a better team.
The Doctor Posted 10 July 2014 Posted 10 July 2014 You're not going to bother watching the worlds biggest football match? I don't care who's in it. It could be Scotland v Afghanistan, if you like football you watch it! we still wouldn't win that ****er. Cheer up Kitch, this has been a great world cup - stop looking to be miserable and actually just watch the football.
