Malaysia Airlines MH17 - Ukraine

Crazy. I think that's more or less the standard passenger plane route from anywhere in North west Europe down to the middle East, South East and East Asia and beyond. A very busy route. Why they would shoot down a passenger jet is the question.

Thinking this has to be a dreadful error on the part of either the Ukranians or the separatists. There's no way either side would do something like this deliberately.

Perhaps some idiot separatist tooled up with equipment he doesn't really know how to use?

Either way shit's gonna hit the fan.

Fcuking hell.

I can't even begin to imagine the conspiracy theories being written up now with the other one still missing.

Terrible thing to happen, I didn't think this could actually happen to passenger airlines, I thought they would be far out of reach of something like this mid flight.

10,000 ft apparently so surely if someone was going to shoot it, it would have to be guided by radar? Which would sound like something done on purpose wouldn't it? Not sure how this sort of stuff works but not surprised it happened near Russia...

Wouldn't it be 10,000 metres?? 10,000 ft is low for a passenger jet?

I agree. Looks like they shot it down in error mistaking it for military. Strange though as I'm sure dozens of passenger planes fly that route every day.

10000 metres, so 33000 ft.

There are surface-to-air missiles that have that range, but they are the permanently installed ones, rather than the portable Stinger-type ones. Which suggests that if it was shot down it was shot down from a dedicated facility on the ground. Either Ukranian, Russia or separatist.

I'd have thought the transponder signals for a military and civilian aircraft would be massively different though to prevent this kind of awful screwup in the past, and I'm betting any and all militaries do not engage civilian aircraft without positive ID and a really, really good reason.

Which makes it all very strange though, as you said. Goodness only knows why this particular plane would be targetted (if that is what happened).

This is a Buk missile launcher, the type allegedly used to shoot the airliner down.

Can easily imagine something like that being capable. Absolutely terrible... things could really kick off. :(

Apparently being reported that seperatists have claimed responsibility for shooting down a Ukrainian Military Transport plane... guess again you morons!

Hopefully they can pick up the black box sharpish before any un-wanted hands get to it.

I don't know what the black box can tell them,

Well it could rule out a fault with the plane for starters.

Reports are only alleging it was shot down by a missile.

Flew into or close by to a restricted area according to sky new sources.

Western airlines have been avoiding the area/route path but eastern airlines such as Singapore airlines/ Malaysia etc have continued to fly in/close by the area.

Off topic a minute but I haven't seen Zingari post for ages.

I was thinking this earlier today (Now THERE'S a conspiracy theory - the Fox92/TravLeBleu mind-meld!), but hew often disappears for a while from the forum in summer. He probably holed up in his volcano island lair in the South Pacific somewhere off the map.

This on the same day as Israel beginning their ground assault on Gaza? It's gonna get messy.

I swear Israel declared a ceasefire earlier in the day?? Or did I imagine that?

I think they were just changing ends.

A cynic (don't know where you'd find one of them... ) might say that Israel has done this as the World's attention is focussed elsewhere.
