broughtonblue Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 So the first British patient of Ebola has been brought back to this country, he was bought back on his own at great expense, motorways were closed, and has been put into isolation at a special ward. This person went to work in Sierra Leon of his own choice knowing the risks, but others in this country are denied treatment for cancer etc because of cost I personally would rather the cost be spent on people in this country rather than thousands spent on one individual
Bryn Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 He's a British citizen. Who do you know that has been denied cancer treatment?
Strokes Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 Im not sure its the right debate to be having, i hope he recovers, and thats it.
broughtonblue Posted 24 August 2014 Author Posted 24 August 2014 He's a British citizen. Who do you know that has been denied cancer treatment? You hear of it all the while, postcode lottery!
Jon the Hat Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 He has been brought back because the medical establishment are looking for ways to treat Ebola victims. This is quite important. Nothing to do with people being denied expensive drugs to extend their lives by a few months.
Bryn Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 You hear of it all the while, postcode lottery! It's fucking bollocks mate.
Jon the Hat Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 It's fucking bollocks mate.Agreed - media scaremongering.
broughtonblue Posted 24 August 2014 Author Posted 24 August 2014 It's fucking bollocks mate.Ok I bow down to your superior medical knowledge being as you put your point across so eloquently.
Jon the Hat Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 Ok I bow down to your superior medical knowledge being as you put your point across so eloquently. He is right though.
Webbo Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 Ok I bow down to your superior medical knowledge being as you put your point across so eloquently. I believe Bryn is a doctor or medical student.
Itsthejoeker Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 He's been brought back so we can help discover a vaccine for a disease which has the potential to kill hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people.
bovril Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 As long as he's a hard-working, honest, tax-paying, honest, British, tax-paying, hard worker from Britain who works hard and pays taxes. And is from Britain.
Bryn Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 Ok I bow down to your superior medical knowledge being as you put your point across so eloquently. The NHS has PLENTY of real problems that need addressing, Daily Mail tripe being peddled by people who don't bother to actually critique what they're being spoon fed really don't help. And as others have said, we need to study Ebola. He's a British citizen who needed to be brought home and treated and we're damn lucky to live in a country that can do that, but Ebola WILL break out and we need to develop the expertise to manage it.
Bryn Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 Don't take that personally by the way, I'm not saying you're an idiot or anything. It's just there's a lot of myth out there and it doesn't help anybody.
ADK Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 I'm glad I'm not the only one to think this. It also seems a bit perverse that we don't mind Africans dying but we'll make a big fuss if one of our own gets it, despite the fact they had a choice in the matter and those caught up in the outbreak have no choice.

I think we're doing quite a lot of work out there and have been for a while.... we can't really bring every African over though, it makes sense to bring home a British citizen.

I believe I'm right, you believe your right.

It does discount the idea that we need to bring them over to study it. Treatment for the common person seems to be getting worse so it's not surprising that people would question why we want to invest so much in an outbreak somewhere else.

Because his disease could reach our shores too?
ADK Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 Because his disease could reach our shores too? It's unlikely.
Itsthejoeker Posted 24 August 2014 Posted 24 August 2014 It's unlikely. Unlikely, which means there's still a chance. I'd rather not take the risk, don't know about you.
Rincewind Posted 25 August 2014 Posted 25 August 2014 Don't know much about the disease or whether it is worth bringing the bloke over. If it helps find a cure then there should be no problem. hopefully the facilities are better here. Did anyone know that there was a protest march about NHS closures from Jarrow to London? It reaches Leicester next Saturday and there will be a rally in Town Hall Square about 5.15 with several guest speakers.Maybe the NHS is not important enough to make the news. Anyway good luck to those that are going to experiment on the bloke. It can only be good news/
Guesty Posted 25 August 2014 Posted 25 August 2014 If he's out there helping people then he should be helped. For all we know he could be a leading doctor in suppressing/curing the disease. Plus, if he's working with a company (I think he's a health worker) I'm pretty sure they've got some pretty good insurance which covers this sort of thing as he's going into an Ebola outbreak.
leicsmac Posted 25 August 2014 Posted 25 August 2014 I think that the only way Ebola will get here will be if it mutates to become airborne. And if Ebola ever becomes airborne it's not going to matter about bringing this guy back, or any other guy come to that - the reasonably long asymptomatic incubation period plus global transportation will do the rest. Unless humanity already has or could come up with an effective antiviral really, really fast. . Thankfully there's no sign of it doing so right now, and I actually think bringing this man back over here to research is a good idea, if only to try to prepare for such a situation.
