Good money making scheme for anyone who wants to take the risk. If you go to africa, catch ebola, come back you'll be one of the first to have it in this country, that guarantees you top medical help. If and when you recover, a) you'll be resistant to it and therefore you'll outlive everyone else because the hospitals will be too full  and b) you can sell your blood for a fortune as an antigenic.

Why is the British military getting involved?. Is there some kind of viral warfare conspiracy going on? seems strange.

I wouldn't take the risk! Some people who have had the Zmapp drug have died. Sure, it is a lower mortality rate than without but would you take the risk? It really isn't about the quality of healthcare unfortunately, although that should help slow the spread, because we should catch it earlier and make sure the health professionals are protected (although in Spain...).

I don't get why the military are involved, people will go to hospital too late, they will spread the virus before and on their way to the treatment. And then when they get there, because they have gone so late, 70% will still die. For me these treatment centres are just to make people feel like someone is doing something, when in fact there is no cure and all they can do is give you a bed and isolate you from spreading the disease further. Isolation is good, but we dont need to put our military at risk doing it.

Ha.. just find it a bit strange that's all if that's the case.

I'm sure there's a logical reason for it?

The strain they've got patented is a modified version of ebola, and the patent basically works as protection so only they can work with the modifications for a while - it's no different to the patenting of the havard mouse - a mouse researchers had added an oncogene to, making it more susceptible to cancer - they patented that so their research was protected, the same with the strain of ebola patented by the CDC.  It's not what those trash sites like naturalnews claim, that the US government created ebola to kill...

Anyway, I've played enough pandemic to see how this ends: "Madagascar has closed all its borders".

Fvckers.

Mind you, the Greenlanders in the mobile version are even worse. Bastards always survive no matter what I do.  :(

So 750 troops are being despatched to Africa. Are they going to be medically checked when they return from that area, as the government has stated that people coming in from these areas, will not be subjected to checks? This, I find worrying.

They mean the general population as their argument is it would be more effective when leaving affected areas so I would expect the military to be checked before they leave.

I work for the NHS, your talking out your arse.

I'm concerned that someone who works for the NHS thinks this is possible...

Its a well known fact that dirty fvckers have stronger immune systems, and seeing as there is no real cure only your immune system, coventry and burnley should be ok.

Reports say a British man has died of the disease in Macedonia. A hotel in Skopje quarantined. I was hoping the Balkans would be enough of a backwater to avoid it...

I heard from my old housekeeper in Liberia the other day. Her family have been staying home trying to isolate themselves, but now they are running out of food and don't have any money because they haven't been at work. I've sent her some funds so she can buy food. But she has to take a taxi to get the cash and to go to the market.

I asked what steps they are taking to keep themselves safe, she said they have a bucket filled with chlorinated water that they wash their hands in. I can't imagine that is going to be enough precautions.

Such a sad situation.

I started reading this and couldn't help the feeling I was reading one of those scam emails from Nigeria asking for money.

"Dear Sirs,

I am your old house keeper, please send money to help with Ebola. "

That's a shame.

I know a number of people on here have been making a few jokes about the situation, and some are mildly amusing, but there are real people being affected by this. However, I know we tend to face difficult situations with a bit of humour. Except when it starts to spread in Europe, I doubt there will be too many jokes then.

Apologies Baltimore, I didn't mean to offend.

I was being honest, when I started reading your post I was honestly waiting for the punchline as it just reminded me of those sorts of emails.

I'm taking it seriously... I've already been to the supermarket and stocked up on tinned goods, bottled water, pot noodles and a copy of razzle.

Gallows humour. We tend to joke about a situation that worries us, it's natural.

Don't worry I wasn't hugely offended, but I do consider it a shame that we all naturally go to stereotypes, West Africa = Scam emails. I am glad you are stocking up!! Be prepared!!

Exactly, as I said, we face difficult situations with a bit of humour. However, it is also a lot easier to do that when the people involved are so far away and removed from everyday life. One day, it probably wont be a laughing matter. Get stocked up like Babs!
