fox123 Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Wembley to host the semi-finals and Final of the 2020 Euro Championships. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29251585
EnderbyFox Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Good news and bad I guess, happy to have it here but can't help but feel it's putting back our chances of hosting a major tournament anytime soon.
Footballwipe Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Nice to beat the Germans again. They pulled out because they want 2024 in its entirety and apparently we've agreed to back their bid in return. Call it a draw
Grandad. Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Doubt England will ever host a World Cup in my lifetime, shame really as I am only 23.
notnow john Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 How on earth was Hampden selected and the outstanding Millenium stadium rejected.
purpleronnie Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 They pulled out because they want 2024 in its entirety and apparently we've agreed to back their bid in return. Call it a draw Oh no! not Penalties?.
Kitchandro Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 What's the point of only having the semi-finals and Final in the 'host' country? Completely defeats the object of the tournament. Imagine if the world cup wasn't played in one country. It would be shit, as this will be.

Imagine if the world cup wasn't played in one country. It would be shit, as this will be. Its a special case as its an anniversary since the first (60th?). Anyway I think its a great idea. When else would Scotland, Ireland and Hungary get a chance to be part of a Euros? Also, travelling around Europe for games is probably the equivalent of travelling around Brazil, if not less demanding.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 I also don't think it's as terrible an idea compared to when it was first thought out; expanding the tournament to 24 teams is just going to dilute the quality, mind.
Jon the Hat Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 No chance of seeing England play in England then!
Super_horns Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 No chance of seeing England play in England then! Probably be playing in Dublin or Glasgow - that might be interesting!
Dan Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 It'll be a shit Euros anyway. What a joke of an idea.
BoyJones Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Cardiff lose out to Glasgow, probably because they have no decent airport and difficult to get to. If England qualify, will probably play their group matches outside the UK and Eire.
ousefox Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 As someone else said, I can imagine this might make a difference in us hosting a whole tournament which is shit. This country would be buzzing if we did. I barely noticed any difference with the Olympics here up north.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 I hate the idea of hosting it in several (not necessarily seven) countries. We'll be hosting the semis and final, which we probably won't feature in, then any of our bids for the next 40 years will be ruled out because we already hosted the Euro final, bah.
Jordan Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Blessing and a curse. England deserve to host a major tournament or at least those three big games, but I can see the 270,000 tickets just being divvied up between UEFA, the FA, and their sponsors. As someone else said, I can imagine this might make a difference in us hosting a whole tournament which is shit. This country would be buzzing if we did. I barely noticed any difference with the Olympics here up north. It will. The FA and the DFB have essentially made a gentlemen's agreement whereby Germany withdrew Munich from the 2020 semifinal/final consideration in exchange for England's support for a German 2024 bid. Considering that Munich will get to host three group stage games and a quarterfinal match in 2020, if England's support helps Germany host 2024, the DFB will have made out like bandits.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Shouldn't have gave any to Russia considering they have the World Cup just two years earlier.
act smiley Posted 19 September 2014 Posted 19 September 2014 Azerbaijan over Cardiff and Stockholm? I know they've got a load of oil money to spunk but that does go against the "it''ll be just as easy as getting between cities at the opposite ends of one country" b.s. A bit
Nalis Posted 20 September 2014 Posted 20 September 2014 Azerbaijan over Cardiff and Stockholm? I know they've got a load of oil money to spunk but that does go against the "it''ll be just as easy as getting between cities at the opposite ends of one country" b.s. A bit Fair enough, Baku is a bit of a distance out however comparatively... Manuas (Where England played Italy) to Rio = 1,771 miles Baku to Budapest = 1,595 miles. I do agree though that Cardiff would have been a far better option than Baku. Perhaps getting the Super Cup this year hindered their bid in the end?
Finnegan Posted 20 September 2014 Posted 20 September 2014 Azerbaijan isn't even in Europe lol They're UEFA.
Kitchandro Posted 20 September 2014 Posted 20 September 2014 Its a special case as its an anniversary since the first (60th?). Anyway I think its a great idea. When else would Scotland, Ireland and Hungary get a chance to be part of a Euros? Also, travelling around Europe for games is probably the equivalent of travelling around Brazil, if not less demanding. This isn't about the distance travelled. The point is, Euros and World Cups are supposed to be set in a certain country. I don't even like the co-host thing. Each European championship and World Cup has it's own uniqueness because of the country it's held in. That is what makes them what they are. Secondly, if Scotland Ireland and Hungary aren't good enough to compete why should they be a part of it? That's the point of an elite competition. Or shall we chuck San Marino in there as well? Thirdly, since when is 60 years a special anniversary (for a football tournament held every four years)?

Surely that's unique in its own right. The countries comment: I don't think the country of the host cities automatically qualify. Anyway, this format allows some great cities in Europe such as Copenhagen and Budapest ( both amazing, would recommend both) to be part of the tournament when their countries are unlikely to hold them. Why deny the likes of those cities the chance to contribute to this one off format just because they are major cities in relatively small nations?
