Nice bloke, just one of those things, its a dangerous sport.

Hope he pulls through.

After this and when Broad took one through the grill and on the nose it is probably not a bad idea to check the safety requirements of helmets.

The helmets certainly can leave parts of the head exposed, particularly when batsmen turn their heads for a hook shot.

Yeah it went through the gap and into the side of his head I think, God only knows how painful that must be.

Was he wearing a traditional helmet or was it one of those new style ones?

That's the incident, didn't look in a great state at all. Hopefully he pulls through though.

I've told this story before in the test cricket thread but having just watched the incident it was very similar to what I got. (albeit as a much leff pace)

Ducking underneath and the pace just takes it through the gao and hit you on the head, unavoidable and I can't see how you could really make a helmet that could stop everything unless you turn up to the crease looking like a lacrosse player.

I got away with mild concussion, some players aren't so lucky :(

Awful news. I hope he makes a full recovery. :fc:

This is the full text of the statement from Cricket Australia team doctor Peter Brukner:

"It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away.

"He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday.

"He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

"As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

"Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected."

desperately tragic news, couldn't quite believe it when i heard it earlier. spare a thought for the bowler too - just such a sad situation  :(

Again,as others have said tragic.A freak accident resulting in a loss of a talented young life.Followed him a bit as due to my old work colleague hitting 80 against Worcestershire in a cup match many years ago, that was my team to follow and Hughes had a spell with them. This is probably the worst tragedy of someone playing cricket I have heard of.This really is shocking. This is a sad sad day for cricket ,cricket Australia and lovers of the sport. If I had had 1% of his talent when I played I would have been a happy man.

This might sound bad but I promise you it's the opposite,if I died playing the sport I loved, whilst having a decent innings and luckily not knowing much about it,I think that would be my way to go.

RIP PHILIP HUGHES

Tragic. Cricket has lost a good bloke.

Dont particularly like cricket but you cant help but feel saddened that a sportsman at such a young age was killed in such a freak accident. Such a shame. The bowler must be absolutely devestated.

So sad about this. Not read much on it but did he have a underlying condition triggered by the impact?

Bowler must be devastated too, he's going to need lots of help to recover from this.

Terrible news, I hope the situation is reviewed and to ensure that batsmen are given as much protection as possible, I don't want fast aggressive bowling to be tempered in anyway as it is great to watch. It may be that we have to write this off as a freak accident, unavoidable and just get on with it, but there needs to be a proper review into helmets and equipment to establish that.

Tragic

the ball hit a part of the head were his helmet did not protect him. Changes in design must be made.

Only way to protect against something like this happening again would be to wear helmets similar to what ice hockey goalies wear.
