Jimothy Posted 14 December 2014 Posted 14 December 2014 Just seen the vote counts, wasn't even close. Hamilton 209k to McIlroy on 123k. The biggest joke is a woman who made a horse dance got more than double the votes of a blind woman who throws herself down mountains.
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 It's like only 2 players on the golf tour playing with metal clubs and everyone else playing with wooden clubs.
srbfox Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Biggest joke is Hamilton saying "proud to carry the Union Jack", he's not that proud to live in Britain though!
Footballwipe Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 SPOTY is a glorified popularity contest which lost all credibility when Man Utd fans voted in their droves for Ryan Giggs to win the honour. It's a huge event built up and glitzed by the BBC that rightfully spends time honouring the true winners (Invictus, England Womens Rugby Team) and then it goes downhill as soon as the phone lines open for the public vote.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Biggest joke is Hamilton saying "proud to carry the Union Jack", he's not that proud to live in Britain though! Oh dear... and what is wrong with that exactly? So anyone who was born and raised, has british parents and decided to live outside Britain is no longer proud lmao
Nalis Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 The only reason I think Lewis Hamilton won was that he might not be in a position to win again and, in all honesty as a double world champion, he probably deserves one SPOTY. Although Rory has had a better year, perhaps the public perceived him to potentially have other multi major winning years so if he didnt win this year, he will more than likely win in another year.
ADK Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 I think F1 is probably more popular and you probably need to know a little about golf to even realise Mcllroy (sp?) has done so well. I did feel Hamilton did well as he had to come from behind under a lot of pressure.
Guest MattP Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Quite unbelievable to be honest, a man who has a 50-50 chance wins ahead of a bloke who wins TWO majors in a year, something a lot of the greatest golfers of all time couldn't achieve. As for the womens rugby team winning ahead of the Ryder Cup - Never seen such obvious tokenism.

McIlroy did fantastic yes but hamilton is the first british driver to win two F1 titles since Sir Jackie Stewart... if either had won it, it would have been well deserved
Guest MattP Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 McIlroy did fantastic yes but hamilton is the first british driver to win two F1 titles since Sir Jackie Stewart... if either had won it, it would have been well deserved Odds of Hamilton winning F1 title start of year - 11/8 (37.5% chance of it happening) Odds of Mcilroy winning the two majors and Ryder Cup - 18-1 8-1 4-6 - combined 240-1 (0.3ish% chance of it happening) Both great achievements yes but the two are pretty incomparable in how hard they are to achieve.

What Mcilroy achieved was not just outstanding in british sport but sport in general. But the same can be said of hamilton, he won 11 grand prixs in one season, not just won the title but clocked in an incredible tally of wins. No doubt I would be pleased with either winning it though.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Think this is a classsic example of short-memory public. Had McIlroy done his double a few weeks ago and Hamilton won his title in early summer, it would probably have gone the other way. The BBC also gave Hamilton's feature some really cool visuals, which probably helped sway a few votes. I can remember the last time a Brit won the F1 championship, 2009. The last time a Brit won 2 majors in one year... 1990... and I had to check that - Nick Faldo, who didn't win SPOTY that year either!
purpleronnie Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Do people think that Hamilton won because he's English? Given the population differences of Northern Ireland and England? Bit of a boring reason, but it might have had some impact on the voting.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 How about the one on now as they introduce the contenders for the main prize? Sounds like the theme music from Interstellar - certainly Hans Zimmer.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Biggest joke is Hamilton saying "proud to carry the Union Jack", he's not that proud to live in Britain though! Monaco or Stevenage, hmm I wonder which one I'd pick
purpleronnie Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Monaco or Stevenage, hmm I wonder which one I'd pick Yep those are his only 2 choices :xmaswink: , Let's not kid ourselves, he lives in Monaco to save on tax.

srbfox Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 He has previously said he left Britain for taxes purposes. Can't be that proud to be british really!?
Brainy Posted 15 December 2014 Posted 15 December 2014 Must be easy to live on a shitty estate and say if I had millions and millions of $$$, I wouldn't move abroad. He spends the best part of 3/4 of a year constantly on the move anyway, who actually cares.
Jimothy Posted 16 December 2014 Posted 16 December 2014 Doesn't Button, and Alonso, and Rosberg and in fact pretty much every F1 driver, live in places like Monaco and Switzerland? But suddenly now it's Hamilton too its a major issue.
Finnegan Posted 16 December 2014 Posted 16 December 2014 Hamilton is a big part of a motorsports industry that provides shitloads of British jobs and must pump millions in to British engineering. Mercedes are UK based aren't they? Mclaren are, Red Bull are, most teams are based here. Telling me that doesn't contribute to our economy and to those local communities in Northamptonshire etc? What's the point of "making it" in life if you can't choose where you live? If I had millions, I'd **** off to Hong Kong or Fukuoka in a heartbeat. It's bollocks here. I like the British, generally, I'm not patriotic but nor am I self loathing. But the weather here is shit, I'm bored of our food, I'm bored of our architecture, our kids are all awful and we've got Simon ****ing Cowell. More than happy to emigrate. Fair play, Lewis.
surrifox Posted 16 December 2014 Posted 16 December 2014 isn't it just the case that the people who follow F1 have all the time in the world to sit indoors and keep texting votes for their hero - lets be honest its not like they would be spending time with a wife or girlfriend or anything :xmaslaugh:
