Michel Platini: Fifa seeking life ban for suspended vice-president

Fifa vice-president Michel Platini could be facing a life ban from football, according to his lawyer. The suspended Uefa chief is serving a 90-day suspension on corruption charges alongside outgoing Fifa president Sepp Blatter, while Fifa's adjudicatory committee considers its verdict.

Platini's lawyer Thibaud d'Ales said the ethics investigators' "excessive" recommendations are a "scandal".

The adjudicatory committee intends to announce its verdict next month.

The Frenchman is facing sanctions over a "disloyal payment" that saw Platini, 60, receive £1.35m from Blatter, 79, in 2011 for consultation work done nine years earlier.

The pair, who are serving 90-day provisional bans, have denied any wrongdoing, but admitted there was no written contract.

The adjudicatory committee, led by German judge Hans Joachim Eckert, opened proceedings on Monday, after receiving the ethics committee's recommendations.

Platini is currently barred from taking part in the campaign to replace Blatter as Fifa president, but is taking his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas)

Nope. You've got to wait a little longer.

It's Alfredo Hawit Banegas (CONCACAF & Honduran Football Association) and Juan Ángel Napout (CONMEBOL president, Paraguay).

For those of you keeping score at home, this means the last three men that have served as CONCACAF president and the last three CONMEBOL presidents have all been arrested as part of this massive international corruption dragnet.

Fifa crisis: US charges 16 more officials after earlier Zurich arrests

US officials investigating corruption at football's world governing body Fifa have charged 16 more officials.

The new indictment, released by the Department of Justice in Washington, comes hours after the arrest of two Fifa vice-presidents in Zurich.

Former Brazil football federation chief Ricardo Teixeira was among those accused of being "involved in criminal schemes involving well over $200m (£132m) in bribes and kickbacks".

Fifa said it would "fully co-operate".

Current Brazil football president Marco Polo del Nero is also on the new "superseding" 92-count indictment, which alleges "racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies" with "sustained abuse of [the defendants'] positions for financial gain".

The current and former senior football executives charged are:

  • Alfredo Hawit - Concacaf president

  • Ariel Alvarado - ex-Panamanian football official

  • Rafael Callejas - former president of Honduras football

  • Brayan Jimenez - Guatemala FA chief

  • Rafael Salguero - Guatemalan Fifa executive committee member

  • Hector Trujillo - general secretary of Guatemala FA

  • Reynaldo Vasquez - former El Salvador FA president

  • Juan Angel Napout - Conmebol president

  • Manuel Burga - former Peru FA president

  • Carlos Chavez - Bolivia football president

  • Luis Chiriboga - Ecuador football president

  • Marco Polo del Nero - Brazil football president

  • Eduardo Deluca - Conmebol general secretary

  • Jose Luis Meiszner - former Conmebol secretary general

  • Romer Osuna - Bolivia football audit and compliance committee chief

  • Ricardo Teixeira - former Brazil FA chief

US attorney general Loretta Lynch said: "The betrayal of trust set forth here is outrageous. The scale of corruption alleged herein is unconscionable.

"And the message from this announcement should be clear to every culpable individual who remains in the shadows, hoping to evade our investigation: you will not wait us out; you will not escape our focus."

Earlier, Hawit and Napout were held in a dawn raid at the Baur au Lac hotel, Zurich, arrested on suspicion of accepting millions of dollars of bribes, at the request of the US authorities. The US is attempting to extradite them.

The Swiss hotel is the same location where several Fifa officials were arrested in May.

Fifa's executive committee has been meeting in the city, voting on reforms.

What else is on the new indictment?

Webb pleads guilty

In May, nine Fifa officials and five sports and broadcast marketing executives were indicted by US prosecutors on corruption charges as the governing body became engulfed by claims of widespread wrongdoing.

On Thursday, it was announced that one of those defendants - former Concacaf president Jeffrey Webb, has pleaded guilty to money laundering, wire fraud and racketeering and has agreed to forfeit $6.7m (£4.4m).

He did not contest his extradition to the US.

They should just shut the whole organisation down and start from scratch again, ethically.

Would be a dream come true for football.

Exactly this.

At this point when so many people up top are being accused and potentially convicted you've got to completely disband the orgnaziation and start fresh. Rebrand.

In meantime all independent countries can be run by their countries FA rules or even fifa rule book until a new one is setup.

And instead of getting rid of 2 more premiership teams why dont we just stop putting 4 english teams into champions league and get rid of a cup competition. Problem solved.

Champions league greed is taking over. Why should a 3rd or 4th place team even be in it? I can understand top 2 max. But takes the piss of whose best of the "Champions ".

Fcuk fifa, fcuk UEFA and fcuk villa too!

With all the corruption being exposed at the top you can bet your life there's a fair old bit involved in stuff like the Champions League and other federation equivalents as i bet there's as much money if not more floating around those events.

Or it's the How to be Corrupt training ground for future FIFA officials

Reports this morning suggest both Sepp Blatter and Michael Platini are getting 7 year bans.

An earlier poster asked why the USA had got involved. Simple reason, it's in their interest. Dirty money.

Also, the Department of Justice office believes it is in their jurisdiction to press charges as the specific individuals charges are alleged to have used banks, organizations, and competitions based in the United States to launder money. The DoJ feels they have substantial precedent to use these legal frameworks to prosecute these guys after successful convictions in similarly-handled investigations into money laundering for terrorism and drug trafficking.

Fifa: Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini get lengthy bans

Fifa president Sepp Blatter and Uefa boss Michel Platini have been suspended for eight years from all football-related activities following an ethics investigation.

They were found guilty of breaches surrounding a £1.3m ($2m) "disloyal payment" made to Platini in 2011.

Both men denied any wrongdoing. The bans come into force immediately.

Fifa boss since 1998, Blatter, 79, had already announced he was quitting ahead of February's presidential election.

Platini, 60, was tipped as a future leader of football's world governing body and had hoped to succeed Blatter.

A three-time European Footballer of the Year and former captain of France, he had been in charge of Uefa - European football's governing body - since 2007.

Blatter and Platini have also been fined £33,700 ($40,000) and £54,000 ($80,000) respectively,

Both men are likely to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but their careers in football appear over.

Why are they banned?

Blatter and Platini were found guilty of ethics code breaches over the "disloyal payment".

Both claimed the payment was honouring an agreement made in 1998 for work carried out between 1998 and 2002 when Platini worked as a technical adviser for Blatter.

The payment was not part of Platini's written contract but the pair insisted it was a verbal agreement, which is legal under Swiss law.

German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert, the chairman of Fifa's adjudicatory chamber, held disciplinary hearings for the pair last week.

Charges included conflict of interest, false accounting and non co-operation, with investigators submitting a file of more than 50 pages.

Statement - key points

"The proceedings against Mr Blatter primarily related to a payment of CHF 2,000,000 transferred in February 2011 from Fifa to Mr Platini.

"Mr Blatter, in his position as president of Fifa, authorised the payment to Mr Platini which had no legal basis in the written agreement signed between both officials on 25 August 1999.

"Neither in his written statement nor in his personal hearing was Mr Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this payment.

"His assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber.

Is this the end for both men?

Can Platini and Blatter recover?

Platini boycotted his hearing in Zurich on Friday in protest, claiming a decision already appeared to have been made.

His lawyers attended, but it looks as though the Frenchman is preparing to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Blatter is planning to hold a news conference at 10:00 GMT.

He has already announced he would not be seeking a fifth term as Fifa president but is unlikely to accept the ruling of the ethics investigators.

Whatever happens, they will find it hard to recover from the damage to their reputations.

What now for Fifa?

World football's governing body has been in turmoil for several months now, following numerous allegations of corruption.

Seven Fifa officials were arrested at a Zurich hotel at the end of May.

And US authorities have charged 39 football officials and sports business executives over more than £134m ($200m) in bribes for football television and marketing deals.

Swiss prosecutors are also investigating Fifa's management as well as the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

There is also pressure from governments and the International Olympic Committee for Fifa to push through major reforms aiming at making governance more transparent and accountable.

What we need at the head of world football to clean up the image of the game is somebody with an impeccable reputation, somebody who wouldn't lie or cheat. Who does the head of the English FA recommend? None other than Bill Clinton! Laughable if it wasn't true. I'd rather have Peter Taylor! Does anybody have a better suggestion? Trevor Benjamin? Junior Lewis?

I've seen the 'I'm sorry' (said how many times) speech from Blatter.

I actually think he's just saying it as he's been found out, instead of being actually empathetic.

No doubt he'll win his appeal, which would be hugely ironic considering the type of scandal.

It's the old 'non-apology' apology
