How many "stars" stay for championship return

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't expect promotion if we have a 34/35 year-old Konchesky in the side. And I wouldn't expect us to stay up afterwards if Morgan is still our captain. There will be people in the club considering this as well, I'm sure. I have at least that much faith in them.

As for getting relegated, thoroughly restructuring, returning and staying up. Well, there aren't too many sides in recent years who have gone down and come straight back up without at least changing the manager. QPR are the most recent example and they ended up changing managers this year, and it looks like they're going down. Most sides who have gone down and opted for stability have stayed down too. As for the last side to go down, restructure, come straight back up and stay up, I think West Brom signed twelve or thirteen players before and during 2009-10, as well as changing manager. West Ham changed manager and - I've just checked - signed 19 players and let go of 33 in 2011-12.

Only two sides...and both had far more prem experience before those seasons than ourselves.

They had structures which needed less 're-structuring' than we need next season, largely as a result of being in the top flight more often in that time period.

This team took 3 years to build and came straight back down.

Building at that level gives you no guarantee of success. You get up as quick as you can.

QPR and Burnley's approach.

Doesn't seem much better.

People out of contract will probably go, GTF & Knockaert for eg.

Everyone else is under contract except for Cambiasso, who like GTF last summer has the option (his option) to take a 2nd year with us. I'm sure MLS will come knocking though and he's basically been offered a job for life at Inter so we'll have to see

Kram joined us when we were bottom of the league so he'd have had to take relegation into account when joining us - He may also have a clause allowing him to move on if a Prem club comes in for him - Either way, it will all be in his contract and the club would have protected their end

The rest, whether they leave or stay is the club's decision so the club will do what they believe is right

Cambiasso and Mahrez are the two I'm most afraid we will lose.

Ulloa signed a four year deal on a then club record fee at the start of the season, so he will probably be bound to stay and I think Kramaric will stay too. Mahrez would appear to be more determined to engineer a move away and is capable of playing at the higher levels, while keeping Cambiasso in the Championship just not likely to happen.

All this stuff about building a squad over three years is bollox. You scramble your way into the prem and then you make quality additions. Even of it was possible to perfectly judge a squad so that it comes good in three years time, we'd have no chance anyway because our promising young players regress more often than they develop. We'll struggle either way next season but our best chance will be in using the parachute payments to keep our best players. Otherwise it's another half decade in the championship at least

Posted

The thing is, its all hypothetical depending on whether NP is still in charge, whether or not Top wants immediate promotion or is willing to realise that 2-3 years at championship level may be required to develop further.

I'm just not sold on this anymore. I was 12 months ago but not after this year I'm not. We had a lot of young players as regulars going into this season after absolutely walking the Championship and we've totally bottled it. No level of performance in the Championship is going to convince me that we'll stay up in the Premier League the next year. Not after this season.

Did someone just say I was impatient because i only waited 10 years for a return to the top flight? Did someone say that the owners need to realise that a good 2/3 more years in the championship are needed to create a prem side?

Mental.

why would schlupp leave hes just settled and started a family in a new home and has lived here a long time now.

Same could be said for Cambiasso, he has just settled here and at his age does he really want to do it again.

None of our players have been consistent enough or set the premiership alite week in week out. So whats to say anyone will be on there way out?

The only people that could go for money are mahrez and kramaric.

Anyone who thinks Kramaric is going to put his international future at stake, to play second tier football is being highly optimistic in my opinion!

He was getting caps while playing for Rijeka vs the equivalent of League 1 teams and a few Europa League teams.

There's no reason why Croatia wouldn't go for him if he's scoring goals every week in the Championship, he's more likely to develop his confidence and game as a player while playing every week netting for a team like Leicester in the Champ than he is with us as a loan striker vs Aston Villa.

That being said, if a good offer comes in for Kramaric - more than what we paid, then he'll go without a doubt.

Fans don't make bids for players! expect someone to come in for MJ. Just hope he wants to stick around to play with DD again next season.

Agreed, I'll be gutted if he goes, the best player we have I think, Prem class and would love it if we could keep hold of him

I also think Schlupp going is out of the question.

One of our academy players who has proven his versatility - again asked to play a new position this year as LM - players like Schlupp don't come around too often, bursts of averageness but for the most he's been a good player for us.

Only think stopping us retaining him is the Ghana national team, and even then he's on the fringes.

Who I think will depart;

Kasper

Wasilewski

Upson

Konchesky

Knockaert

Mahrez

Cambiasso

Albrighton

Hammond

Wood

Ulloa

Kramaric

GTF

A lot of rebuilding work to be done preseason by who ever is in charge.

More than several departures :P

it was genius of NP to hand out 4 year deals for players who arent good enough for the premier league.

this way, they are still motivated to get us promoted from the championship whereas if they were on shorter deals they may not want to bust a gut getting the club promoted when they'd probably be released in the summer.

Cambiasso has clearly given everything into this season and he might just love us enough to stay and try and put us back in the prem in what will likely be his last season as a player.

Kramaric will go on loan to a top flight club somewhere so he can impress and we'll get our money back, maybe even make a profit.

Mahrez looks destined to leave but hopefully its one of those situations where he doesnt agree terms with another club til next january by which time he would have helped us build up a 20 point lead at the top of the champ.

all this is irrelevant as we aint goin down!

yet he got into the national team playing in his home country, which (no offense Croat friends) is much lower ranked than the Championship.

the only one with the potential of actually leaving is Mahrez and even that massively depends on him wanting to go.

no one else has covered them selves with glory at all, if we don't need to sell, we wont sell. its as simple as that.

this dont mean GTF and wood etc, probs Konch, who i fully expect to leave.

Knocky will get a new contract, im sure of it.

Would be very disappointed if Kasper wanted to leave, dont think he's proved himself in the prem. Very different story to Mahrez, who I think has earnt a move and I wouldnt begrudge him it.

Who says we are down already?

The thread talks like it's a foregone conclusion. .that it's already over.

Where's your passion, hope and expectation?

Tsssssk

We can have this conversation if and when we know we are relegated.

Tell you what..how's about a 'who do we need if we stay up' thread?

Talk about giving in...

We have to think of both next year and the year after.

To go to 'bigger clubs' Kasper, Mahrez, Krameric, Ulloa (possibly)

To be released \ reject contract: Baka, GTF, Upson, Logan, konchesky, knocky, wood, GALLY!, Cambiasso

So LB, CB, DM, Winger required. Hopefully Lawrence will be given time to develop.

Anyone who thinks we would consider selling Kramaric for less then 10 million must surely be off their rocker, and I don't think any club in the world would be willing to match that valuation. I suspect he will go on loan somewhere if he doesn't stay. Ulloa won't leave, he has hardly taken the Premier League by storm and nobody will be willing to pay us 8 million so we can recoup our money. Schmeichel has proven he isn't really Premier League material so anyone who goes for him will be mad.

I think Mahrez is the only definite, and he deserves to stay at this level. No way will we keep all three of our goalkeepers and I actually think Schmeichel is the most likely to stay, Schwarzer may retire or Hamer may leave because by all accounts he and Pearson don't see eye to eye. I would be surprised if we retained the services of De Laet and Simpson and I would expect Simpson to go out on loan somewhere. Konchesky will probably retire, as will Upson and Wasilewski (or he will return to Anderlecht). Liam Moore is a doubt in my opinion but I think Pearson will be forced to keep him. We will receive bids for James and Schlupp I am sure of it, though I doubt we will sell. Knockaert and Albrighton will both probably leave, Knockaert on a free (what a bargain he will be for someone) and Albrighton on loan. Hammond is another I can see leaving on a free along with Cambiasso. Vardy and Nugent will stay and Wood will leave for half a million or so.

That leaves us with a potential squad of:

Schwarzer

Schmeichel

De Laet

Morgan

Moore

James

Drinkwater

King

Schlupp

Nugent

Vardy

Ulloa

I reckon we will promote a few under 21s players such as:

Chilwell

Choudhury

Lawrence

Barmby

Hopper

It will be a new look squad in my opinion, and we will need to sign at least 4 players if we choose to promote some youth into our first team set up. If we decide against that we will be looking at 9 or 10 acquisitions.
