Thought I was doing well at around 500. These bastards must live this game.

 

Looking at the shop it's not even down to buying in app purchases either is it? Unless their lucky eggs are doing this business for them?

Some places are just crawling with certain Pokemon so if you go all out it's do-able. I've already got enough Electabuzz candy to get my strongest one to well over 1000CP but at the moment I'm not that bothered about the gym aspect of the game. Maybe when I've got a few strong ones of different types

 

What level are you? I'm level 16 now and pretty much everything I come across now is 200 - 400CP, sometimes more. Certain Pokemon CP shoot right up when you evolve and Power Up increments are cheap. The trouble is I never know when to evolve (for keeping, not for XP gain)/power up because the next time you come across the same Pokemon in the wild it's usually stronger
