I think this has all started with Carolina's deferral from the toss.

You notoriously start games well and you're opponent doesn't. Why give them the football to try and change that?

I was working in London last year during the Super Bowl and really enjoyed the TV commentators' handling of the game. They managed a nice balance of explaining some of the more obscure/nuanced bits of the game as they happened, without making it feel like a documentary on American football.

 

Back in the States this year, one thing that bothers me about the American broadcast is the strange, faux gravitas with which our commentators treat the Super Bowl. It's like we're supposed to think of it as some kind of solemn event. Have to say upon reflection I much preferred the English announcers' treatment of the game as simply a spectacle of sporting entertainment - nothing more and nothing less.
