Germanwings is a subsidiary of Lufthansa - their low-cost carrier, so to speak.

I've not seen the news - other than a quick squint at the BBC website but the weather may be a cause. Very changing at the moment and there was snow recently not sure if it is at the moment though.
Guest Kopfkino Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 The initial descent seemed to start when they were in an area that they could divert and get back on the ground safely but they continued to fly towards the alps. That would suggest the crew weren't in control of the situation but the mayday call would suggest otherwise. Still it's stupid to speculate now, will have to wait til we know more. Heart goes out to the families that are affected and I hope the passengers didn't know too much about it
Jon the Hat Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 RIP. You do feel for the families and friends of the passengers and crew. I fly quite a lot of short haul for work, so this is worrying. Not too many crashes in Europe these days thankfully.

Monk Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 Everything about this incident is pretty much unheard of in modern european aviation all seems very weird. No one is really even speculating what happened - all the usual suspects seem unlikely for a variety of reasons. Terrible for all involved.

I just had to remember that millions of flights around the world happen each year with no problem. It's like locking someone in a room full of laughing clowns who's afraid of clowns, they're not just going to sit there and have a cup of tea and relax, there's absolutely no danger but it doesn't make it plausible. Horrible incident.

There's twice as many flights now as there was a decade ago, it's going to appear that way. 2014 saw the least number of accidents but there were nore fatalities. Still I hate flying

These crashes are so uncommon that they were barely reported. When MH370 vanished, THAT was uncommon, so the media have cashed in on reporting every major disaster since then.
