French Air Crash

Tragic news.

I'm flying to Munich next week with Lufthansa and news like this does not help my anxiety at all. Though, flying is super safe and we only hear this news because it happens so rarely.

Allegedly no survivors, 148 people rumoured to be dead - the plane was midway through the route from Barcelona to Düsseldorf when it crashed in a pretty remote area in the French-Italian Alps.

Germanwings is a subsidiary of Lufthansa - their low-cost carrier, so to speak.

now 150.

if you check flight radar it came up then started back down when it went over land.

a few hours till they reach the crash side apparently. if there are any survivors it will be a miracle.

I've not seen the news - other than a quick squint at the BBC website but the weather may be a cause. Very changing at the moment and there was snow recently not sure if it is at the moment though.

The initial descent seemed to start when they were in an area that they could divert and get back on the ground safely but they continued to fly towards the alps. That would suggest the crew weren't in control of the situation but the mayday call would suggest otherwise.

Still it's stupid to speculate now, will have to wait til we know more. Heart goes out to the families that are affected and I hope the passengers didn't know too much about it

RIP.  You do feel for the families and friends of the passengers and crew.  I fly quite a lot of short haul for work, so this is worrying.  Not too many crashes in Europe these days thankfully.

Everything about this incident is pretty much unheard of in modern european aviation all seems very weird. No one is really even speculating what happened - all the usual suspects seem unlikely for a variety of reasons. Terrible for all involved.

An Airbus too. Wonder how many they lose in comparison to Boeing.

Neither lose many, A320s and B737s are 2 of the most popular airliners in the world, and there's thousands of them.

This is becoming weird just how often this has happened recently on passenger airlines.

I fly 100's of flight each year and really don't worry, next week I'm flying to Japan via Frankfurt, I'm more likely to die driving home than on a flight

Every year there are more and more flights, it will happen. It's still ridiculously safe compared to, I don't know... going down the shops for a pint of milk.

Lucky! You're right. I just had to remember that millions of flights around the world happen each year with no problem.

2014 was the safest year to fly on record as well.

You can tell someone who's scared of flying you're more likely to die walking down your stairs a thousand times but it doesn't make any difference, such is the definition of a phobia. It's like locking someone in a room full of laughing clowns who's afraid of clowns, they're not just going to sit there and have a cup of tea and relax, there's absolutely no danger but it doesn't make it plausible. Horrible incident.

There's twice as many flights now as there was a decade ago, it's going to appear that way. 2014 saw the least number of accidents but there were nore fatalities.

Still I hate flying

Exactly. It's not even dying that I'm afraid of, it's the terrifying situation out of my control. Think I might leisurely train it back to the UK this summer.

I wouldn't be surprised if that record gets surpassed almost every year.

These crashes are so uncommon that they were barely reported. When MH370 vanished, THAT was uncommon, so the media have cashed in on reporting every major disaster since then.

I enjoy being out of control, modern life is like a playpen in general.

Not at 30,000 feet thanks.

I've been on planes hit by lightning, dropping 1000 feet because of clear air turbulence, aborting landing etc, just hang on and watch people panic is my advice
