johnny the fox Posted 12 June 2016 Posted 12 June 2016 I dont think you understand democracy. That's how it works. If the UK had 100% of the votes and decisions, it wouldn't be democratic. Now if you're argument is that the current system isn't fair, representative or doesn't function well, then that is a fair point that I am willing to discuss and may even concede. But the leave supporters claiming that "they" make all the decisions and "we" have no say is wrong and frankly, like the weekly cost, a lie. are being serious? I bet without you looking it up you don't even know who your MEP is...let alone having voted for him or her...please don't lecture me about democracy there's a good lad..
johnny the fox Posted 12 June 2016 Posted 12 June 2016 What broken system? You can wear the tinfoil hat and head for the bunkers if you like but there is very little wrong with "the system" that telling a few right wing newspapers to shut up and a government that thinks that taking money out of ordinary peoples pockets is the best way to control them. Austerity used to be called monetarism when I was a lad. Same effect, make people poor for no reason. Make them think we are up the creek and in debt - "our childrens children will be paying for this" yep that's how it works. Tony Blair made the last payment to the yanks, in 2006, for lease lend 60 odd years later. BTW we've started paying off "1927 consols" loans set up in 1927 by Churchill to refinance debts from the early 1800s. Anyway the topic is way over there <------------------ and I seem to be way over here----------------->. not sure of the point you are trying to make.. but if think the political system in the uk couldn't stand a bit of makeover I disagree...
johnny the fox Posted 12 June 2016 Posted 12 June 2016 You know you are a european whether you are in or out of the EU don't you? You should try and get your city to opt out of the UK. You'd have even more control then, wouldn't you? No I didn't know that, I will have to get a world map out... you did know you are on planet earth didn't you? because you sound like you are on the moon most of the time.. try asking Russia if they want to be a part of the EU...its in europe you know...

I bet without you looking it up you don't even know who your MEP is...let alone having voted for him or her...please don't lecture me about democracy there's a good lad.. How patronising and condescending. Good lad! Just because he might not know his MEP, doesn't mean he wasn't democratically elected, and that that MEP doesn't vote on his behalf in democratically elected parliament. We can all get pissy and say we didn't vote for X amount of the other MEP's but how far do you want this to go? There are 649 MPs that I had no say on being there voting on things that affect me, and in fact I didn't vote for Nicky Morgan, so there's actually 650 I didn't vote for. Should I vote for independence? Should I declare myself Faceclothland? So less of the patronising shit eh, good lad.

You don't have just one MEP - each region is represented by a block, with the East Midlands having 5 or 6 representatives for it I believe. I also recall Kilroy was an MEP for the East Midlands at one point.

Rincewind Posted 12 June 2016 Posted 12 June 2016 I must admit I do not know who my MP is. I may recognise the name but do not remember the last Euro election.

I can't remember their names now but I knew them at the time of election.

I bet without you looking it up you don't even know who your MEP is...let alone having voted for him or her...please don't lecture me about democracy there's a good lad.. Ah thanks. Not been patronised like that since Alan Duncan implied I was a low achiever because I work for the NHS. What does knowing the names of my MEPs have to do with understanding democracy? I have voted in every election I have been entitled to. Yes, including 2 police commissioner elections. Who I vote for really doesn't matter, where I live the Conservatives win. But dragging you back to the point, having just under 9.7% of the elected decision makers doesnt mean that we have no say and that bureaucrats are making all the decisions.

purpleronnie Posted 12 June 2016 Posted 12 June 2016 I'm becoming more and more disillusioned with politics.. So many people voting on one issue and not caring about the big picture it's frightening. My main concern is those wanting change are much more likely to go out and vote. I know if we vote out that's me done with politics and I'll take the ignorance is bliss line.

No one votes for a candidate at an European election.
