Mark_from_USA Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 We need to think about how we bring up players through our system. We have invested a lot in a top class Academy setup, and we want it to pay dividends. We will need 5 forwards, but do we keep Nugent in the rotation for what he brings, or try to start making space for youth? I tend to think we will keep him as a squad player, but with his return I think he would be down the pecking order and might be expected to make way, especially if we consolidate our position and are not at death's door all season.
Steven Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 The most written off and underappreciated player at our club. How many times does he have to prove his worth to us? Sorry but imo he is an important squad member and will prove it yet again I saw a newspaper article at the beginning of the season where he said he had unfinished business in the PL. He still has. Ulloa and Vardy have stepped up, Nugent has not. If Nige can find a better player to replace him, Okazaki, for example then let Nugent go. We need more quality in his role.
Benguin Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 The season is over Is David Nugent's time at Leicester City coming to an end? A hero for many in the stands due to his goals and workrate over the years, would you be happy to see Nugent move on this summer and for Leicester to replace him? My opinion: David Nugent has held us back for quite a while. Many may disagree but his goal tally in our Championship winning season was poor considering our form and style of play and the fact that most of his goals came from the spot. This season he has popped up with some important goals so credit to him for that but we have players in the current squad who can play his role/position better and we have the prospect of more joining in the summer. One argument for Nugent's inclusion in the team is his partnership with Vardy. His absence from the starting line up during the final month did nothing to dampen Jamie's impact on the team. I would be happy for the club to recoup a fee and replace him. I don't like your opinion
Mad Dog Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 This thread is so hard to read. How can people still be questioning his worth to us? And how many times does he have to prove you wrong? I really hope he doesn't read this forum at all.
HighPeakFox Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Big admirer of Nuge. Be careful what you wish for people......

Yes he is a hero for his 'work rate and goals', and he 'has popped up with some important goals' this season. Sooooo, in conclusion, let's get rid of him???
Kitchandro Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Despite scoring one of the bafflingly overlooked goals of the season at Liverpool, Nugent has found the net enough.Kramaric is younger and more talented and looks more of a natural goalscorer, Vardy's all round game is more vital to the way we play, and Ulloa's goalscoring return has been more than satisfactory. We need to bring in players who will convert the many chances we are capable of creating and Nugent is going to be left behind.
foxfanazer Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 But people aren't suggesting that he's ahead of those 3
fleckneymike Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 But people aren't suggesting that he's ahead of those 3 Precisely. When you recruit you should always aim to replace your best player. That means the poor sod at the bottom of the pile gets shown the door. In a little of 24 months Wood has gone from first choice to no choice at all. Knockeart went from star man to bombed out on a free, Drinkwater was an ever present and now gets a brief cameo. Nugent has done wonders for us in the Championship but the writing was sort of on the wall when he was given two years, that screamed of caution, the idea was most likely that if we got relegated he'd be around for one year to get us back up before being released to balance the books. I do like him as a player, he's busy and always looking to get forward but, as with every single member of that squad, will have to be replaced eventually if we are to progress.

We need to bring in players who will convert the many chances we are capable of creating and Nugent is going to be left behind. We had this whole debate last Summer with people just not understanding the concept of reserve players, and wanting to see players like King, Nugent, Hammond and Schlupp replaced because they weren't "Premiership quality". We've purchased Kramaric because Nugent is 30 and will need replacing sooner or later. But what you don't do though is sell your trusted, experienced players before the young, unproven replacement has shown that he's up to the mark. So no, we keep Nugent on for the remaining year of his contract and he is our fall-back if Kramaric gets injured or doesn't find form. It's almost as if Pearson has already thought this all through...
foxoffderby Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Keep. Seems the op hasn't seen much live football in the past 2 seasons.
DarkTranquillity Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 He's a very valuable squad member to have around. Works extremely hard, great for morale and deserves to be here. The only forward player to leave will surely be Chris Wood?

Tommeh Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Poll does the talking really doesn't it? I've always held the view that not realising or appreciating what Nugent brings to our side shows a real lack of footballing knowledge. Added to the fact he's clearly a popular figure in a changing room we can all see holds excellent morale and team spirit, keeping him on is a complete no brainer for me. Just another player that I really enjoy having a this club, now into his 5th season. Gewon Nuge.

Fox Ulike Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 16% of votes are for Nugent to leave. Cheerio Dave (52 votes [16.61%]) Percentage of vote: 16.61% Don't go, please stay (261 votes [83.39%]) Interestingly, apparently that’s the exact same percentage of the population who are statistically ‘dumb’!!! "Well, if you assume that human intelligence is on a standard bell curve, then 68% are within 1 standard deviation. Of mean intelligence, 95% of the population is within 2 standard deviations of the mean intelligence and 99.7% are In 3 standard deviationsSo, I would say 16% of the people are dumb... 2.5% are idiots! and 0.15% are blithering idiots. At 7 billion people, around 1.12 billion are dumb. 175 million are idiots, and 10 million are blithering idiots. Hope that answers your question. I hope my math is right because it's late and I'm moving towards the blithering idiot side of the scale." The stats don’t lie http://www.quora.com/How-many-people-are-idiots

Gerard likes this post. I couldn't agree more, you have a first team squad of 20 players or so. Ideally you have at least one of the youth players break into it every season. Always aim to bring in players who are better than what you have. If you're over the age of 21 and have fallen out of the 20 first team squad players then you need to be moved on, preferably for a fee but one way or another you have to go. A lot of people might think Nugent is now fourth choice striker but he can play up front or in the hole. If we get another striker in then someone has to go but Nugent is still a PL class player.
Gerard Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Another way of looking at it is how many players do we have that can play in either the two striker position or the hole behind them? Ulloa Vardy Mahrez Kramaric Nugent That's five players competing for three positions. I'm not counting the likes of Wood who aren't first team players. If anything we're short on numbers for those three positions.
thybluefox Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Should we be relying on him as a first choice striker at this level? No, certainly not. Should we be utilising him as a utility player, able to step in either up front or in behind and reliably put in a shift when needed? Certainly yes. I'm not sure why so many on this forum consider every decision or opinion to be so black and white.

The harsh reality is that one of the strikers has to score. Vardy and Nugent at this level don't get you the goals (combined they have less than Ulloa), so then you need to choose between one or the other and currently that man is Vardy on account of his pace and assist level. We're bound to bring yet another striker in (Pearson admitted as much by confirming an interest in the striker for Mainz), he is a 'busy' fwd so to me that indicates that one of Vardy and Nugent will be pushed down the pecking order if that bid is successful. I would expect that Wood will be the first to be jetisoned but with one year remaining Nugent is a likely candidate for sale. Edited to say that in 98 Prem appearances he has 14 goals.
FOXES-BROWNBOY Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 25k a week to sit on the bench so unless he takes a wage cut, he can go.

Mahrez and Kramaric have got the potential to be better, but I think Nuge has got two or maybe three more good seasons of being a first team player for us. Long live Nuge.

If anything we're short on numbers for those three positions. Agree with this. Don't think we will see an out and out CAM come in this window but we will likely see another forward. We need to cover 3 starting positions: ST, ST and CAM. A fourth striker, hypothetically say Shinji Okazaki is signed as may yet be the case, would mean I could see Nugent dropping back into CAM, where he played well pre-injury, giving us: ST's: Ulloa, Vardy, Kramaric, Okazaki CAM's: Mahrez and Nugent. I'd be happy with that moving into next season and can only see that not happening if someone of real quality becomes available in CAM and we leave Nugent as 4th choice ST instead.
