Guest LCFC_World Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 No he is class. He has got experience which is vital as well.
Sampson Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Picture the scene: next season we play Sunderland, it's a dire game but we're solid defensively. We have three chances, they all fall to Nugent... Who's confident that we win that game 1-0 and take the three points? This is exactly what happened versus Hull City at home this year, Nugent missed the chanes, and it's because of this that we needed to go on an unbelievable (once-in-a-lifetime) run of form to survive. Works hard, good for the shape of the team... I get all that. But it's not good enough to take us to the next level. Picture the scene: next season we play Sunderland, it's a dire game but we're solid defensively. We have one chance, it's been created in part by Nugent's graft and him creating space and they all fall to Ulloa. Who's confident that we win that game 1-0 and take the three points? This is exactly what happened away to Stoke City this season. Or who's confident Mahrez playing in that role would be able to scrap it out in the same team? He's not going to score 15 goals a season... I get that, but not all strikers, at any level, do. He fulfils a role no other players do in our team and that's linking up midfield and attack through graft and scrapping and creating space that's something that will be bound to come in handy at some point next season. Assuming we don't need him because we have Ulloa and Kramaric and Vardy is assuming they all do the same job which they don't - There will be different kind of games next season to each other and we'll need different kinds of forwards to play in them.
Jakemoore Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Tidy player especially in a number 10 role. Doesn't give the ball away often and has bags of pace and energy. But needs to score more. I'd definitely keep him! Also just a good character to have around the place!
The Horse's Mouth Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Keep, definitely. Even if he's slowly being worked out of the team, he's fantastic back up and he's done so much over his time here. Probably controversial opinion, but I genuinely believe he was Sven's best signing.
Claridge Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Nowhere near the team for me next season if we want to kick on.Don't even see a place on the bench with Kramaric and hopefully a new powerful forward signing All the rubbish about being a better team with him the team, can be put to bed after the last few games.

Wymsey Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 He's fine as an 'impact sub', but prefer the Ulloa and Vardy Partnership.

The better the team, the less the need for 'scrappers' and 'grafters'. If you want us to remain a grafting and scrapping team then, yes, let's keep Nugent. If you want us to move up to the next level then people like Nugent will need to be phased out. The thing is though I actually trust Pearson to know this and do it. He's shown in the past with the likes of Wellens and Gallagher that, no matter how good a player has been for him, he knows when to get rid. Playing hardball over the two year deal for Nugent probably shows that Pearson knows next season should be the last season Nugent is of any use to us. I can't imagine he'd have pictured Nugent being a crucial player in the last year of his deal either so I think he'll be bit part next season (as hinted with the continued links to other strikers).
Webbo Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Unless we have a 100% guaranteed better replacement lined up them stay.

Nothing to do with the fact that the team hadn't won a game for four months. JeezAs for your original question, I'd keep him as I think he's a very useful player to have in your squad. It's worth remembering that he was in good form when got injured.

Good point but i still think quality teams need a couple of scrappers and grafters to allow the quality players to flourish. I think Pearson demands this attitude from every player no matter who they are
Matt Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 He pissed me off sooooo much earlier in the season, but he was important during our crucial and successful run in. It's quite amazing because quite a few players who I deemed not good enough (And let's be honest, even if you're a optimist who never slags players off, hand on heart can you honestly say they were good enough during those dark winter days? Certainly they didn't seem good enough consistanly) all come good at the same time, all improved massively almost with a click of your fingers. Like i've said many times in the past, I don't want to slag players off, if I am things aren't going right but i'm not gonna sit there and defend it if they're poor, likewise i'll praise them and admit when i'm wrong if they then impress. I can take or leave Nugent, I'd probably like to keep him, see how next season pans out but I think perhaps let him go after that dependant on how next season goes.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 I had to think long and hard over this one. I am a great admirer of David Nugent, but I think he would be happier with more regular football, than be a 'bench sitter' If we are to improve next season, we need the best players we can possibly get, and David would be warming the bench most of the time. Very sadly, I feel the time is right for both ourselves, and him, to move on. I say this with a heavy heart, because he has done so well for the club.
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Yep, it's all down to those missed chances by Nuge in that one game. It's worth remembering that he was in good form when got injured. Do you know what, it actually almost is. Your strikers are there to score goals and take chances and if they don't then there's only so far a team can go. Look at the season we got relegated to League One, our defence was strong yet we didn't have enough to go and win games. End result: relegation. At the very top level it's all about (apologies for sounding like Pearson circa December and January) small margins. That Hull game is just one example of matches where we created chances in tight games that fell to Nugent and he was unable to take them. It could have been so costly and would have been were it not for an out of this world freak run of form. Look at the West Ham game as well. Chance for us to go 2-0 up after Esteban gives us the lead but Nugent squanders a penalty and we're left needing a last gasp winner from King. If you're happy to persist with scraping by and not winning games we could do with a bit more quality then stick with Nugent. If you're not and you want to push on to the next level then fill your team with players good enough for that level, which is not David Nugent. The thing with this issue is that I'm not a 'Nugent hater'. He's a likeable character and has been a great signing for us over the last few years and I can see what he adds to a team that has to have a certain work rate and shape to counter a lack of quality, but the time has come where it's time to say 'thank you' and go our seperate ways in search of that better quality.
conLAD logan Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 If we want to progress, we should sell nugent and wood, no room for sentiment, we can thank him and go our separate ways as he'd be far more beneficial for a championship team than ourselves. Btw this is assuming we sign a replacement, which with the reports of Okazaki seems likely.

fleckneymike Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 What Nugent does give us is undistry and endeavour, he was (and probably still is) a great foil for Vardy. Having said all that he isn't a 'finisher', he seldom scores tap ins (Everton aside I'm struggling to recall an opportunity which has dropped to him in the box), Ulloa has that nack, Krameric appears to have that intellegence but Nugent all too often will be stood watching a ball roll across the area rather than attacking that space. If we really are linked with the Japanese player from Mainz then it seems we are once again interested in an industrious player but this time one whose industry also includes goals.

You could probably say the same about Vardy considering the amount of easy chances he messes up, yet nobody ever brings that up. Nugent contributes a lot whenever he plays and is great in the number 10 role. I wouldn't start him over Mahrez at the minute but he's still an important part of the squad

But we're nowhere near good enough for that yet and neither will we be next season. I think people are getting way, way too ahead of themselves thinking we are expected to "push on" next season. We're a bottom half relegation battling PL side and we probably will be next season as well. Hull have shown us how hard it can be in the 2nd season up. We're nowhere near good enough to get rid of players like this yet. IF we find we have better in a season's or two time then fine, but at this point in time it would be absurd to get rid of him. We'll need scrappers and battlers next season. They'll be plenty of games he'll be much more suited to play the attacking midfielder role than Mahrez will. He'll have a part to play next season no doubt.
LCCFox96 Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 As a squad player he offers a lot. He's brilliant to have as an impact sub and in and around the starting 11. His energy and pace will cause problems for most defences in this league and if he is willing to stay then I'd be more than happy to keep him.

To hear you talk there you would think it was Messi, Suarez and Neymar ahead of him. He's still at the very least a vital squad player. I'd be happy to sell if we got say a £4,000,000 offer for him but he earns his place at the Leicester City table. Wood should be sold as he is obviously surplus to requirements. If Nugent starts a game I don't feel that we have a second string FW playing. He should only be sold if we get a good offer for him or possibly if another FW arrives ahead of him on the pecking order.
Harry - LCFC Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 We're signing another striker - he'll drop down to 5th in pecking order. With a year left on his deal, they'll be championship clubs looking at him as a realistic target Always amazes me how people come by this kind of knowledge.
Sampson Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 He's played a good deal of this season (and his best games) as an attacking midfielder/second striker rather than a striker anyway. If Mahrez is injured for example, I don't see someone like Ulloa going back into that position. It's not a case of just comparing like-for-like to the number of strikers we have.
Dan Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 I think we probably ought to be aiming higher now if I'm honest. Don't get me wrong, he isn't absolutely useless, but he's nowhere near good enough in front of goal. We're at a level now where I think we could bring in someone who does what he does whilst scoring as well. If however we do choose to keep him on then I'm well behind him.
AyewJoking Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 replace with new forward or from within? The easy option is to keep him as he will still be one of our most valuable players but if we do sign another forward over the summer then someone has to go.
