A hero for many in the stands due to his goals and workrate over the years, would you be happy to see Nugent move on this summer and for Leicester to replace him? My opinion: David Nugent has held us back for quite a while. Many may disagree but his goal tally in our Championship winning season was poor considering our form and style of play and the fact that most of his goals came from the spot. This season he has popped up with some important goals so credit to him for that but we have players in the current squad who can play his role/position better and we have the prospect of more joining in the summer. One argument for Nugent's inclusion in the team is his partnership with Vardy. His absence from the starting line up during the final month did nothing to dampen Jamie's impact on the team. I would be happy for the club to recoup a fee and replace him.

I have no doubt that at times he can be of the standard required but he can't do it consistently enough (particularly with regards to finishing chances). If we want to push on to the next level and not be dragged into a relegation battle like we were this season then we have to be ruthless and waves goodbye to the likes of Nugent.

Everybody failed to show premier league quality during our poor spell though. He was also a very important player when we started our revival. Unfair to dismiss that
lcfcsnow Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 His injury came as a blessing as we've finally learnt to play well without Nugent, since being forced to try a different player in the hole. Pearson didn't sign an alternative last summer when we were crying out for one, or even give Mahrez (or anyone) a chance in that position previously.

sdb Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 He'd be edging towards 4th choice for me now, but we need 4 good forwards. If we were to sign a quality striker this summer then he might need to look elsewhere, but it's not a priority position for me. Wood on the other hand surely needs to move on.

Sampson Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 He was barely starting during our poor spell. We mostly played Ulloa and Vardy up front who weren't working. It was only when he was reinstalled as part of a front 3 we actually looked like having something going forward. Up until he got injured a few weeks ago we pretty much only looked to have anything going forward when he played. Of course I'd keep him! He's had a good season overall. I still can't fathom how some people can't see what he brings to the team and how he links up midfield and attack so well - people concentrate too much on his goals when he's not really a traditional striker - much more of a deep lying forward or an attacking midfielder who constantly drops back from the front.

On the one hand, I think he fits in really well with our other strikers, works exceptionally hard for the team, is a great character to have at the club, and is a key part of the way we play, so I'd want him to stay on that basis. HOWEVER, I think if we are to improve our strike force for next year, he'll be the one to make way. Ulloa and Kramaric are our record signings. Kramaric was clearly bought with next year in mind, and although I'm skeptical of whether Ulloa was a Pearson signing or more Robinson's doing, you just don't drop someone with 13 goals in his first PL season. Vardy is essentially the personification of our playing style/attitude right now, and with an England call-up to his name, we'd be barmy to sell. Mahrez is really starting to come good in that position just behind the strikers, where Nugent tends to play. And we're heavily rumoured with Okazaki again, suggesting that - even if not him - at least one more striker will join the ranks next year. That would leave us with Kramaric, Ulloa, Vardy, Mahrez, A.N.Other and Nugent (assuming Wood goes). It's not totally unfeasible that we keep that many, but with a squad limit of 25 I wouldn't be surprised to see someone miss out, and my guess is it would be Nugent, unfortunately. Overall it'd massively depend on our transfer dealings this summer, but judging him on his individual qualities as a player? Definitely keep him.
Bryn Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 As I've said in various threads, we should be looking to upgrade in all positions, but I see no problem with David Nugent's ongoing presence in the squad, he's a good player. Besides, I can't see anyone paying a fee for him.

cc_star Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 You need 5 first team forwards. Vardy, Ulloa, Kramaric, Nugent, New signing. Nugent does an invaluable job as a squad player. Dread to think how much poorer our poor run would be without his unrivalled effort. Not that he played many games in it, it was when he returned to the team we had a higher tempo about us and he bought qualities out of other players.

David Hankey Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 With regard to Nugent I feel he is still worth his place in the squad. He has experience and can be, on his day, a ruddy nuisance to the opposition defence. Ok, he's not going to play every game and he is not a 20 goal a season player in the Premiership but who on our books is? There is no problem with several players getting on the scoresheet as yesterday's game proved. It's all about doing it on a regular basis and creating and taking your chances when they come.
lifted*fox Posted 25 May 2015 Posted 25 May 2015 Stay, IMO. Not the most consistent striker at this level but he's a hard worker and a very good partner to Vardy. He's also scored some cracking goals - a couple of which helped us to find our way again this season. Not forgetting that he also seems to be a positive influence on the squad. Another year wouldn't hurt tbh. He's been very good for our club over the last couple of years - I know sentimentality shouldn't come into it...
