srbfox Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Can you be world class but never show it on the world stage I.e. George best?
Max Power Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Consistently exceptional performances at the very highest level
srbfox Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Consistently exceptional performances at the very highest level Pele never played in the European cup, never tested himself against the best at a club level. Neither did best.
GaelicFox Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 You have a nandos Black Card for the whole family
Alf Bentley Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 I don't think you have to be in the World XI to be considered world class. If someone was considered "Premiership class" or Championship class", you'd expect them to be competent at that level, but not necessarily in the top XI for that league. Similarly my definition of World class would be if you can compete and make an impact at the top level of football. Does Mahrez currently have, or does he have the potential to, trouble defences at the top level? Possibly. PS. What a nice debate to be having! Beats debating whether we should start Michael Morrison or Robbie Nielson at right back. Just to be pedantic for fun..... If a "Premiership class" player is competent at Premiership level, then presumably a "Champions League class" player is competent at Champions League level. So, presumably a "World class" player is competent at a level higher than that of a competent Champions League player? In the absence of a World XI to play Mars, presumably the top level at which someone would have to make an impact in order to be "world class" would be the World Cup. That couldn't just mean taking part, or Glen Johnson and Ricky Lambert would be "world class". A player would have to make a major impact at a World Cup (though Champions League is arguably a higher standard, so personally I'd accept a major impact in the Champions League). Did Mahrez have an outstanding August? Yes. Does Mahrez have great potential? Yes Is Mahrez world class.....?

Champions League is just Europe, world class would be good enough to fit in there + any other top teams in other continents wouldn't it?
Alf Bentley Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Champions League is just Europe, world class would be good enough to fit in there + any other top teams in other continents wouldn't it? "Good enough to perform creditably for a top team in Europe or South America", I'd grudgingly accept (David Luiz has "fitted in" a top European team and I wouldn't see him as "world class" - and other continents don't play world class club football). I'd still prefer them to be good enough to make a World XI for inter-planetary tournaments, though. It's all very well doing it at the KP on a Saturday, but what would Mahrez be like on a poor pitch on a cold Tuesday night on Jupiter?
AyewJoking Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 the best players on the planet which are probably Messi and Ronaldo
Sir Fynwy Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 World Class means far too good to play for Leicester

Max Power Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Pele never played in the European cup, never tested himself against the best at a club level. Neither did best. Pele won three World Cups, with starring roles in all. Best won the European Cup and scored in the final plus starred in many big knockout games.
Fox92 Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 For me, it's players who perform at every single level. Good not only for their club but their Country too. You don't have to win a World Cup to be World Class. Platini, Cruyff, Van Basten etc never won a World Cup. But they performed.

So, presumably a "World class" player is competent at a level higher than that of a competent Champions League player? Depends how you compare a top performing International team like Spain or Germany to a top performing Champions league team like Barcelona. If you think the standard at International level is better than Champs league then I suppose so, but I wouldn't say it was.
Jon the Hat Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Will be ever be a top top player though? Hmm? That is the big question.
Alf Bentley Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Will be ever be a top top player though? Hmm? That is the big question. He's one of Top's top players already......
Frost Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Watched Sunday Supplement and the woman from The Times called Gylfi Sigurdsson world class, so now I really don't know. I'm a massive fan of his but he's nowhere near 'world class'. I always thought its sort of the two/three best places for each position, minus a couple here and there. Basically the best 25 man squad possible.
oohaahmustafa Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 id say world class simplymeans that they could walk into to ANY team in the world. Basically this.
Dan Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Mahrez is a special talent, but World Class is going that bit too far for me. I think he could play for a Champions League standard side, but to be World Class, for me, you have to be pretty much nailed on to hold down a place in nearly any side in the world. Granted, it becomes flawed if you put Messi, Suarez, Neymar & Ronaldo in the same squad as you won't play all four at once but you get the gist.
Dan Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Messi Ronaldo Neymar Muller Neuer Robben etc... Close topic. I was putting a list together and had every one of them bar Robben, he's borderline. I'd add Suarez & Bale to that list too and maybe even Chiellini. Suarez is #3 in the world for me.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Don't let Bert catch you saying that Rooney has scored very roughly 2% of his goals against footballing 'superpowers' 0% of those v a footballing superpower in a tournament And about 3% of them in tournaments Well done Wayne.
4everfox Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 World class means being amongst the best in the world at what you do. In footballing terms that applies to Messi, Neymar, Suarez, Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Hazard, Aguero, Silva, Sanchez, Neuer, Robben, Pogba. They are the only ones (bar three or four that I failed to mention) who could rightfully be categorized as world class and Mahrez will never be as good as any of those. Sure he has the potential to be a very very good footballer but he will never be world class I don't think.
Stadt Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 World class premier league players Aguero SIlva arguably world class Hazard Schweini Costa Sanchez Fabregas
lcfcbobby Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 As much as I hate to say it but no player will ever be world class whilst playing for Leicester! ! The club is not big enough for him to get that much recognition! Yes he is a good player but until he moves to a bigger team and performs at a high standard playing champions league football then sane people might have this debate!
