Prem referees earn £75,000 a year

Just out of interest Googled how much they earn and wow! It's basically all because footballers earn so much, but there job is to keep fit and referee 38 games a season. And have every summer off.

The worst thing is that football league referees earn £400 a match. It's only the 'premier elite' referees who earn £75,000 salary and £1000 match fee.

So another £38,000 on top of the £75K salary?

All that money and yet they appear fairly unaccountable for their piss poor performances. The match fee at a minimum should be wiped if they perform badly.

It's a multi billion pound business so I don't see why they shouldn't get a share of it sure they're not perfect but they're highly scrutinised and often abused plenty of times wrongly.

If I had to criticise any of them it would be the complete waste of the goal line officials in euro games. I wonder how much they pick up for doing fa

Top footballers are equally unaccountable for their pisspoor performances despite being paid 50 times more (yeah, they might get a few nasty words in the press, I suppose). I don't think this is just about the money.

It's actually around a £40k retainer and then a £1,150 match fee, and Championship matches have a £600 match fee.

Overall the average premier league referee is on about £70k per year.

Seems about right to me.

75k is not enough if you ask me. Ref's cannot win, always get hurled abuse, accused of making wrong decisions and the way the football rules are some can be interpreted differently by whoever is reading them. So even if the ref stands by his decision someone else will still think he is wrong.

Players can have a bad game and we forgive. We never forget a ref's decision over handball, fouls, penalties etc..

That was correct a few years ago. It's a lot more now since the new tv deal

Not enough for me. Needs to be more bonuses for doing things right.

Hate it when people talk about refereeing as if every man and his dog could do it.

And deductions for when they do things wrong.

Agree they probably deserve a bit more in terms of earnings. They're not perfect and it's easy to slate them but the fitness standard along with the (supposed) refereeing standard is getting ever higher.

Disagree with the earlier post about fifth officials though on the goal line. They're doing a good and important job but because they don't wave their arms around and signal people seem to think they do bugger all.

Do you get your salary deducted when you make a mistake?

they should all be on a performance based salary. most of them don't even deserve paying at all. in fact they should probably pay £40 to get into the ground like the rest of us.

No but if i kept on making mistakes week in week out I'd probably end up sacked.

Are they mistakes though? Or are they just different opinions?

There are virtually no errors in law that the referees make, but errors of judgement are just different opinions "in the opinion of the referee" is probably the most common used phrase in the Laws of the Game

yeah i am sure you would love that if it happened at your job. deluded comment.

So referees make mistakes on a regular basis and nothing happens. Referees make a good decision and they get a bonus for it. Why's that fair?
