Tuna Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 I know we already have a non league thread, but I wanted to post congratulations to Grimsby Town who have returned to the league today after beating Forest Green 3-1 in the Conference Playoff final. Since beginning supporting Leicester in the early 90s Grimsby were an established championship side. It was inconceivable to see them go into non league (and latterly Tranmere). My first LCFC game was at Blundell Park in 1995/96...it was Martin O'Neill's first game in charge and we drew 2-2 after being 2-0 down. Became a bit of a GTFC well wisher after that. So lets hope now they have gotten back in after too many disappointments, they never find themselves in this position again.
isaidno Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 My first match was against Grimsby in 1992. Didn't really want them to go up. Lincoln get 7,500 for that match. No local derby now.
Thracian Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 I played at Grimsby a couple of times for Loughorough United - happy memories of making a goal for Bill Garner who went on to play as a striker for Chelsea - so I'm more than pleased about their return to the Football League. Sincerely hope they stay there this time.
Corky Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Could do the Wembley double next week in the Trophy Final.
Wymsey Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 Might be battle of the cod next season - Grimsby v Plymouth.
Izzy Posted 15 May 2016 Posted 15 May 2016 My main memory of Grimsby is an evening home game at Filbo in the old Division 2 in the early 90's. We were queuing to get into Pen 3 and about 50 Grimsby fans steamed around the corner and it all went off. Bodies everywhere and mayhem for a good few minutes. Mad bastards all of em from what I remember.
SemperEadem Posted 16 May 2016 Posted 16 May 2016 I've never been to Grimsby but good luck to them. You really do not want too.
Bayfox Posted 17 May 2016 Posted 17 May 2016 I went to Grimsby when we were the holders of the cup. Ahhh that went well. Had a Grimsby fan on our train home sat. Seemed a decent fella. Think he appreciated that we had been around the block ourselves. Will be good to see them back in the league. Although it is a shit away day. Bit of a crap hole to be honest.
Vlad the Fox Posted 17 May 2016 Posted 17 May 2016 Been to Grimsby a couple of times. Once when Muzzy scored that goal and another when Parker mightily ****ed (their then manager) off Brian laws by ruffling his hair after we scored a last minute equaliser. Laws post match interview was hilarious as he claimed their friendship was over. I'm sure he's calmed down now.

He (Laws) threw a plate of sandwiches at their star italian player Ivano Bonetti later that season and got sacked a few months later !

Mad bastards all of em from what I remember. I went to uni in Liverpool and there was a lad from Grimsby in my halls and I can confirm he was a mad bastard. Well until he got a slap from a Belfast lad on the bus one night who was even more of a mad bastard.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 20 May 2016 Posted 20 May 2016 Just spent a couple of days up in Cleethorpes (re family and a caravan ) Congrats to Grimsby Town, good luck to them
Fox92 Posted 20 May 2016 Posted 20 May 2016 Yeah, big congrats to Grimbsy. Pleasure to have them back in the football league. I went Grimsby away when Muzzy scored the overhead and I've liked them ever since. Loads of their fans were on the same train down to London last Sunday. Had a lot of mutual congratulations. Hope they win this weekend to seal the FA Trophy too.
