ClaphamFox Posted 1 June 2016 Posted 1 June 2016 Because he's sick of the pressure maybe? He's never been comfortable being England's one "superstar" in my opinion. I think he's quite insecure as a person, hence the hairline surgery and the botox. I'm sure he loves smashing goals in on the football pitch but does he love carrying the nation's goalscoring hopes squarely on his shoulders? Maybe not. Maybe he looks at Kane and Vardy and thinks let them handle tthe pressure this time, I'll get myself a cosy midfield role. I certainly agree that he hasn't thrived under the pressure of being the focal point of everybody's hopes. But I have a feeling - and maybe it's just naive pre-tournament optimism - that he'll do much better when the focus is on Kane, Vardy etc and he can concentrate on just playing. I guess we'll see...
Stadt Posted 2 June 2016 Posted 2 June 2016 Needlessly switches the play which looks good but doesn't actually help the build up play, his movement is poor and he's slow in about every sense of the word. He can strike a ball well but that's not enough. If we're playing with a traditional playmaking No. 10 then I'd rather have Lallana/Alli/Barkley/Wilshere than Rooney because they're all better at it than Rooney. Similarly, why do we play Wilshere so deep? He's not disciplined enough to play that role nor is he a brilliant deep orchestrator. Play him in actual central midfield so he can run and link the play.
Wymsey Posted 2 June 2016 Posted 2 June 2016 Do we really need Rooney? Yes, he's on £300k a week, but he doesn't do much nowadays. Perhaps better as an impact sub.
steflcfc Posted 2 June 2016 Posted 2 June 2016 Square pegs round holes. Typical Roy, playing players out of position and hoping they perform. He is trying to fit Rooney in his starting 11 instead of placing him where he should be, which is on the bench as an out of form striker and watching 2 players that have scored nearly 50 goals in the Premiership this season
The Horse's Mouth Posted 2 June 2016 Posted 2 June 2016 we're just going to be playing a load of players out of position as usual, we never learn.
yorkie1999 Posted 3 June 2016 Posted 3 June 2016 Beckhamesque 40 yard cross field passes into the crowd were rather good.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 3 June 2016 Author Posted 3 June 2016 Out of interest - has anyone deleted their vote and allocated it another way after last night?
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 13 June 2016 Author Posted 13 June 2016 Anyone more convinced now? I'm still in the unconvinced camp, because although many say he did well against Russia in the midfield role, I felt he lacked dynamic movement for a lot of the game and appeared to tire very early in the game (I would suggest had he not been feeling the strain, his shot that drew and excellent save from the keeper would have been further into the corner, providing no chance for a save). Now yes, there were some nice touches from him at times, but the Russia midfield was non-existent for the most part and he was never put under any meaningful pressure - unlike some of our lads in the local port, so I'm not convinced this is a long term role for him. Perhaps the real proof with this is where Jose decides to play him next season.
Finnegan Posted 13 June 2016 Posted 13 June 2016 He was quality in my opinion. He really wasn't. Kroos was quality, Modric was quality, Rooney was alright. Hardly carved the Russians open on a regular basis. Anyone that thinks he's justified his place in there over Drinkwater or Noble because you dominated possession against a shit Russia is part of the reason you win **** all tbh. (Just for clarity, in case someone else thinks I'm not allowed to criticise any other team without implying I think Wales are the best team in the tournament - I thought Ramsey was also fairly average against Slovakia.)

apple987 Posted 13 June 2016 Posted 13 June 2016 How would the English players in the Welsh team actually feel if they beat England on Thursday and we get knocked out? I just don't get how they could be happy about it.

Pretty sure the English born Welshmen in the Wales team would be ****ing delighted that they managed to get out of the group stages of a major tournament tbh.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 13 June 2016 Posted 13 June 2016 It's kind of not impressive when you'll likely qualify finishing 3rd though
Guest MattP Posted 28 June 2016 Posted 28 June 2016 Well he did well didn't he? Completely out of his depth last night, hopefully now he'll just retire and admit he's not good enough at this level as he can't play his natural position anymore. He'll probably try and get the goalkeeping gig for 2018.
AyewJoking Posted 3 July 2016 Posted 3 July 2016 didnt hodgson say everyone else was under jack wilshere's shadow for the cm role? rooney clicks his fingers and even wheelchair had to settle for a bit part. i think rooney can play there its just for this tournament he wasnt good enough. will he get his place back up front if he decides he doesnt want to be a midfielder anymore?
Guest Col city fan Posted 3 July 2016 Posted 3 July 2016 A part of the FA, the players and the manager somehow moving on from this debacle is to START AFRESH. Its time to drop Rooney from the whole set up and rebuild with slimmer, fitter and more energetic players. He's not world class, he's never ever been world class and the hopes of the nation at successive tournaments being placed squarely on his shoulders has resulted in disappointment over and over again. Get rid and let's have a new philosophy with some new players.

To this day, there are STILL pundits saying he's world class fvcking laughable.
Kitchandro Posted 5 July 2016 Posted 5 July 2016 I wish somebody would do a highlight reel for him like they did for Kane. Some of his stuff against Iceland was comedy gold
purpleronnie Posted 5 July 2016 Posted 5 July 2016 He was fantastic in the 2nd half v Iceland, no wonder he's the first name on the teamsheet.
ScouseFox Posted 5 July 2016 Posted 5 July 2016 jose says he will never play in midfield for him at united
